Get a copy when you still can

The Shahnama of Shah Tahmasp is the pinnacle of all persian miniature paintings. The pages have been divided into different museum and private collections. Only in a book like this, all the paintings in this masterpiece can be united. This is the ONLY book with a complete set of painting in COLOR in large formats.

Most of the illustrations are reproduced spectacularly in terms of both color and details, while a handful of the plates suffer from low-resolution photographing. Fortunately, the bad plates are few, and their originals are artistically mediocre in the first place.

The descriptions are minimum(one line title for each plate), you need another book to explain the storyline.

Amazing. This slightly cheaper (smaller) version of Shelia Canby's Shahnama of Shah Tasmap is just as good as the now out of print original. The illustrations are of a very high quality, with a few exceptions no doubt caused by images provided by outside collectors. For anyone interested in Safavid art or Persian illumination this work is mandatory since it represents arguably the high point of technical sophistication in Islamic illuminated texts. If you balk at the price please consider that prior to this version a complete set of the illustrations was only obtainable in a book that cost more than $1000.

A slow-paced ending to an epic series; Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta's final entry in the Young Jedi Knight series focuses more on redemption and tying up loose ends with the final story arc and characters (mostly Anja Gallandro, Czethros, Black Sun, etc), making this one of the least action-packed YJK novels while still managing to end the series on a positive note that readers will miss if they move on to the New Jedi Order. This book and series are a must for anyone who has read the New Jedi Order series, Swarm War trilogy, and DEFINITELY anyone who has read the Fate of the Jedi Series (Caedus..........need I say more?).

An excellent finish to the saga

After many adventures and many friendships, not to mention fourteen novels, the much loved saga of the Young Jedi Knights has finally come to an end. I greeted this book with a measure of respect, and also a touch of sadness. I expected it to be one the best yet, and I was not disapointed. For a brief summery, Anja finally admits to herself that she is addicted to Andris Spice, (a type of drug) and, though she is trying to quit, she finally can't stand it any more. She steals Zekk's ship, The Lightning Rod, and heads for the spice mines of Kessal to get a few more doses to "tie her over" while she figures out what to do next. Naturally, the Young Jedi Knights go after her, and they eventually track her down to Crystal Reef, Calimari, and that's where the real adventure starts... In short, this book provided a fine close to this final trilogy, with (at last) an awesome confrontation with Czethros and Black Sun, as well as coming to terms with the question of Anja's adiction to spice. Speaking of Anja, this book really seemed to redeem her. I didn't like her at all at first, because of how much of a jerk she always is, and because it seemed that she was trying to replace Tenel Ka, whom I have always liked. She was better in this book, because she was at last admitting her mistakes to herself and to others and trying to set things right. Also, while this book solved the delima of this trilogy, there were many loose ends left unsatisfied, and it didn't seem to bring true closure to the whole series, except in the last few pages. For instance, what ever happened to Raynar after the death of his father? He was never one of my favorite characters anyway, but it should have been Zekk who was left out, not Raynar. Now that Zekk is no longer a villian and his healing processes are through, we really don't need him anymore except to be The Boy That Jaina Likes. I was never to enthusiastic about that boring relationship. Jacen and Tenel Ka were much better. Also, what happened to Raaba? Is she ever going to come back? They should have brought her back in this book. And I would have prefered it if all the Young Jedi Knights were together in their final adventure, instead of just Jaina and Lowie getting to fight the last battle. Anja, Jacen, Zekk, and Tenel Ka are instead all under Crystal Reef destroying the Andris, and while this has as much to do with the main plot as anything else, they are not all together and that is the point. Other than that though, there is nothing else wrong with this excellent book, and I would recommend this series to any Star Wars fan.

Great ending to another trilogy of the Young Jedi Knights

This book was great! Finally Anja has admitted to herself that she is addicted to Andris Spice. She also realizes that Jacen and Jaina are her friends and doesn't want to hurt them any more. It was about time that the New Republic recognize the Young Jedi Knights for all the work that they had done for them. My only regret is that there is a rumor going around the Book World that this book will be the last book that Kevin Anderson and Rebecca Moesta write on the Young Jedi Knights series. I hope that that is not true. I'm sure that every fan wants to see what will happen to the Jedi Knights relationships and what they will do in the future. So Kevin Anderson and Rebecca Moesta, if you happen to read this review, please don't stop writing these books! They're great and I'm sure every fan wants to see what the Jedi Knights will do with they're futures, not to mention they're relationships. Anyway, this book is awsome and if you want to read it you better hurry because I got the last book that they had in stock.

Zongmin Ma received a Ph. D. degree from the City University of Hong Kong and is currently a Full Professor of College of Computer Science and Technology at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China. Valuable reference for serious Verilog developers

Verilog may appear to be "simple" for beginner because it is a loosely-typed language and its syntax is somewhat to that of C. In reality, Verilog is really a complex language and many intricate details and features are buried in the language standard (i.e., LRM, Language Reference Manual). Sometimes these details are counter-intuitive and cause unexpected behaviors (for example, the expressions "(a+b)>>1" and "(0+a+b)>>1" are likely to return different results). This book systematically lists and discusses these gotchas, provides guidelines to avoid these traps, and helps you to develop reliable and robust Verilog codes. It can save you many, many debugging hours down the road. Though somewhat expensive, this book is a valuable reference for serious Verilog developers. A simplified version of this book appears as a conference paper. You can search the web and take a look and decide whether it fits you need.

At least I'll recognize them

Just started writing SystemVerilog coming from a background of Verilog and C++ but the Verilog was a bit stale. There are a lot of things about SystemVerilog that seem counterintuitive from C++, such as automatic vs. static variables, that everything is essentially pointers, scoping rules, the way inheritance works. As I started reading the gotchas in this book, I realized I had already made several of them. I still make gotchas that I've read about but at least I recognize them.

As only Abhijit seems to be able to do, that is shed light on a subject that is on many peoples "mind" lately, but only a few can explain. The idea of a god. The author gives an alternative to the belief that god is a spiritual entity, existing outside of the body in some mystical place. But is only an idea that is conceived in our primitive minds. All of our emotions can be explained as chemical reactions in our brains. Our thoughts of love, hate, fear, and spiritual bliss, can all be explained using science.This idea may prove to be unacceptable to some. On Genius and the Workings of the Creative Process

Nowadays, there is much discussion in the public domain on the concept of genius, on Creativity and on Innovation. We see people like Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and many others being labelled as 'creative' or 'genius-like' or 'innovative'. At the same time, we do not see much elaboration on the precise reasons for marking these individuals out for such special mention except by reiterating the products and ideas for which they are responsible and how much their thinking diverges from the mainstream. What we don't find is a substantive discussion on what this 'Creative Process' really is and how it actually works and what its psychological foundations are. It is this quest which brought me to read this book.

I have always enjoyed reading Sudhir Kakar's insights into cultural psychology, mysticism and psychoanalysis. When I saw that he was one of the authors of this book, I wanted to see what his insight into the subject is. However, it turned out that this book is a collection of six essays on Creativity from six different authors, with Kakar contributing just one, on the Indian perspective of the creative artist. Three articles dwell on the cross-cultural views on Creativity, one each on the Indian, Western and the Chinese. Two others are in the inter-disciplinary perspective from Psychoanalysis and Neuroscience. The final article by James Kaufman looks at Creativity through a generalist approach. Overall, we come across many definitions on what is creative and some approaches to understanding the creative process itself.

The Western perspective is dealt with by co-author Günter Blamberger who suggests that the West has always set wrong priorities by focusing on the personal origin of Creativity , leading to hopeless aporias and myths. The West has a tradition of seeing Creativity as a triad of divine inspiration, mastery of the rules of the domain and scholarly knowledge. Blamberger proposes that we must bid farewell to this concept of 'Genius' and move away from singular creatorship and towards viewing Creativity as an Experience and as a Process. Today's creative practices are mostly processes based on division of labor within collectives and Creativity itself must be viewed as an inter-disciplinary and cross-cultural question.

Sudhir Kakar presents the Indian perspective on artistic creativity based on the classical treatise on the Performing Arts, namely 'Natya Shastra', written around 200 BCE, and on the modern works of renowned art historian, Ananda Coomaraswamy (1877-1947). In the Indian view of the creative artist, he is not a flawed being or prone to melancholia or madness. Rather, to be truly creative, it was necessary for individual personality traits and complexes to be transcended. Coomaraswamy formulates it as '..the Indian artist, though a person, is not a personality'. Creative Imagination is an inborn faculty due to impressions of past births that is so strong in the artist that it responds to the slightest stimuli which are usually ignored by others. Kakar wonders as to how many contemporary Indian artists share this view of the artist as emotionally balanced and artistic creativity as a matter of connecting with the transcendent, spiritual unconscious.

The Chinese perspective of Creativity is outlined by Weihua Niu simply as the very nature of everlasting interaction between the creator and the context, as something evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The focus of Creativity in the Confucian outlook is on novelty and appropriateness, where appropriateness is understood as fitting according to the changing context in a collaborative manner, given a specific situation. On the other hand, the Taoist view of Creativity is to make a connection between oneself and nature, possibly by immersing oneself through meditation.

In the inter-disciplinary discussion, I liked the essay by Margaret Boden on 'Creativity as Neuroscientific Mystery'. Boden says that there are three types of creativity, namely Combinational, Exploratory and Transformational. They are explained as follows:
Combinational Creativity is the generation of unfamiliar combinations of familiar ideas. A scientific example would be viewing the Atom through the Solar system model.
Exploratory Creativity is to use existing rules to generate novel structures. Examples would be to write a new Computer program using a known programming language or writing a new essay in English or creating a new painting in a known style such as Impressionist.
Transformational Creativity is the most exciting of all in that it breaks culturally sanctioned rules within a domain and leads to the creation of a novel idea which seems 'Impossible'. One can think of many examples in Science and in the Arts like Literature and Music.
Boden says that these three forms of Creativity involve different types of psychological processes and that Combinational Creativity is within reach of Neuroscience today. As for Exploratory and Transformational, she says that the human brain is a Connectionist system and we need to understand much better than we do today as to how 'connectionism' can emulate a von Neumann machine before coming to a Neuroscientific view of these two types of Creativity.
Most of us can probably feel good about having experienced some aspect of Exploratory Creativity in our lives and some might have indulged in Combinational as well.

As I came to the last essay in the book, the creative process still remained largely an enigma. Still, the essays provoke our mind and induces us to explore further.

Never do a chart without it!!

Yet another of the few books I make certain to have within arms reach of my desk when I am working. Though only the major aspects are explained, I don't personally work enough with the minors to find that a problem. The explanations are detailed and throrough. Mr. Pelletier covers the opposition, conjunction, trine, square and sextile aspects. The only fault I found is that it isn't terribly user friendly. They aspects are divided up by aspect instead of planet and you must remember to go to the first planet instead of the later. (ie. Mars trined Uranus is under Trines>Mars to Uranus) If you ever plan to interpret a chart, this is one of those must haves.

I'm astonished by the accuracy of this text. In fact it is so accurate that I feel I have a new perspective of myself in relation to the dynamic aspects that energize me. One thing that I find crucial is finding astrological texts that are not overly biased. Pelletier mentions both negative and positive qualities of aspects. For example Pelletier suggests that trine aspects aren't always positive aspects, in fact trines sometimes have the effect of laziness in an individual. Of course Astrology is quite subjective, so its up to the individual to determine if this is a useful text. An excellent, refreshing look at astrological aspects

While many books seem to go by the same route, writing on the shoulders of their predeccers, this book is like a breath of fresh air, that deals solely with aspects, the major aspects, that is.
Not to be taken for 'gospel', I do recommend this book to be used by EXPERIENCED astrologers, as a cross reference to other books on the subject of aspects. After all, you can never have too many books on astrology, witchcraft, herbalism, or any occult/paranormal genre, in my opionion.
While there are certainly plenty of 'witchcrap' books out there, as well as astrology 101, which always starts out with the usual "the ONLY book you'll ever need", this is by far, one of the better astrology books, that reads "out of the box", in a sense, giving the reader some food for thought, and therefore, prompted and encouraged to start pulling out all the other astrology books, and cross referencing them, rather than staying with the same 100 year old interpretations of what such and such aspecting such and such means. For every chart, there is, and never has been, and never will be two of the same, thank the gods. Therefore, if each astrologer's delineation(interpretation) of a chart is different, then why are there so many books on the subject that are simply writing the same, tired 'pablum' that we've been taught for years? Of course, there should be a 'foundation' if you will, for such, be it aspects, Houses, Planets, etc...there will always be room for more.
That said, make some room for this book on your shelf. I have the original hardback, and to this day, I still pull it out now and then, just to see what "Robert" has to say about a certain aspect now and then, just to keep me on my points, so to speak, speaking as an old crone whose been practicing astrology professionally for over fifteen years now.
