This concise and lucid book is essentially a series of essays on events and trends the led to the Chinese Revolution of 1949. It is not a narrative history, though the essays are arranged in a chronologic manner. Bianco starts with a chapter on the 19th century decay of the Manchu state and covers the events leading to the dissolution of the Qing state. This is followed by chapters on intellectual developments leading to the dominance of Marxist thought among Chinese intellectuals, the abortive efforts of the Communist Party to follow Marxist orthodoxy in developing a revolutionary state, and following the near destruction of the CCP by the Kuomintang, its flight to the countryside. Partly because of necessity and partly because of intelligent leadership by the men - Mao, Chu Teh, etc., - who would be become the leaders of Communist China, the CCP adopted a distinctly unmarxist strategy of capitalizing on peasant grievances as the motor of their revolution. Bianco discusses the failure of the Kuomintang to effect significant reforms, the powerful stimulus of nationalism under the pressure of Japanese imperialism, and the ability of the CCP to meld nationalism with their social program in the countryside. After the war, the incredible incompetence of the Kuomintang and the skilful leadership of CCP resulted in the creation of Communist China and the destruction of traditional Chinese society. Bianco does very well in analyzing the role of Marxist ideology and provides a comparative perspective as well. Though this book was written about 40 years ago, it continues to be valuable.

Enduring Insights On Revolutionary China

Lucien Bianco's work is just as valuable now as when it first appeared nearly 40 years ago. It is packed with shrewd insights on policies and personalities, though the concise nature of the text does not permit a detailed narrative. It helps explain the complex intellectual currents, political developments and socioeconomic conditions that led to the People's Republic of China. Bianco stresses throughout the contingent nature of this process, rather than its inevitability, giving due attention to non-Communist actors. The annotated reading list, though dated, remains as enjoyable as it is helpful. No other work has supplanted it, but key recent titles of similar length include D. Qing, "Wang Shiwei & Wild Lilies" and J. Spence, "Mao Zedong."

A History Of The Chinese Revolution-Short Course

As we approach the 60th Anniversary (October 1, 2009) of the victorious Chinese revolution of 1949 I believe that it is probably a good idea to review how that revolution happened. China, one way or another, has become a major player on the world economic scene since that time. Moreover, it represents the last major expression, in some recognizable form, of the Marxist idea of a workers state that drove the international politic of the 20th century. Although I would characterize the revolutionary upheaval in China in first half of the 20th century as predictable the victory of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was not so, rather it was a near thing. I would argue, and will do so at another time, that without the Russian revolution and the lessons learned there, even if not directly applied in China, the Chinese revolution would not have had the leadership necessarily to produce even an agrarian-centered revolution. Professor Bianco, the author of the work under review, would not necessarily agree with that conclusion. He nevertheless wrote an important book that while rather academic for the time of publication (late 1960s) is a very good primer for those who want a first gloss of what the Chinese revolution was all about.

There is, moreover, a certain method to my madness in choosing this book rather than another later one to introduce the various pre-revolutionary stages of the Chinese revolution. The period, as noted above, when Professor Bianco was writing his boo was a period of intense ideological struggle in the international left about which road to take to socialism- the Russian or Chinese? Moreover, this was the heyday of the `armchair' guerilla revolutionary theorist, in the wake of the Cuban, Algerian and Vietnamese revolutions. Thus, Professor Bianco's presentation of the stages of the Chinese revolution had a timely aspect in intersecting those disputes. Furthermore the professor book reflects some very different lessons from those that would be drawn today from a look at that same information. For examples, the well-touted vanguard role of the peasant in world revolution and the strategy of guerilla warfare in the fight against international imperialism have fallen off the political map.

So what has Professor Bianco to tell us as we struggle with the Chinese question today? Most importantly, that in the age of world imperialism as it emerged in the very early 20th century and the international expansion of the capitalist system ("globalization", for you more modern terminological types) down to the "third world" farms meant that the old-fashioned Chinese "feudal" system with its archaic and hide-bound class structure that had survived helter-skelter for millennia was doomed. The fight to modernize China in the post-Empire period (1915), Western-style, led first by the intelligentsia as a class, then by various military types including Chiang-Kai-shek and his Kuomintang (KMT) (old style, as used in the book), and ultimately by Mao's CCP/Red Army apparatus forms the heart of the book.

There are key moments in that fight, as highlighted in the book, some that have enduring importance others which seemed so at the time but have now been eclipsed. Thus the good professor informs us about the intellectuals who led May 4th Movement in 1919 and the subsequent founding of the CCP, the alliance between the KMT and the CCP that ended in disaster (for the CCP) in 1927, the various later attempts to utterly destroy the CCP and its withdrawal from the cities, the urban working classes and its hard turn to reliance on a peasant-based army (The Long March period). There is the military struggle with Japan that begins in earnest in the late 1930s, the eventual subordination of threat struggle to the dictates of the Western imperial powers, especially the Americans, and then post- World War II civil war that led to the CCP victory against the forces of the KMT in 1949.

Along with the narrative of key events the professor provides his take on the intellectual antecedents of the revolution, the social milieus (urban, rural, landlord, tenant, the various gradations of peasant farming and so on) that the various parties were working in and from which they drew their support, various interpretations that earlier analysts, including American agents, placed on the peasant revolution and prospects for extension of the revolution to other parts of Asia. This book is clearly not your last stop in finding out about the roots of the Chinese revolution but it certainly is a worthy starting point. Plus it contains a good bibliography, as to be expected in an academic work, which points you to other sources to round out the story.

One thing led to another, and here’s EveryDayCook. There’s still plenty of science and hopefully some humor in here (my agent says that’s my “wheelhouse”), but unlike in my other books, a lot of attention went into the photos, which were all taken on my iPhone (take that, Instagram) and are suitable for framing. About the Author
Alton Brown used to direct TV commercials and cook on the side. Then he got the crazy idea to go to culinary school and reinvent the food show. The result: Good Eats, which kept Brown gainfully employed for fifteen years and earned him a Peabody Award. Along the way he also hosted Iron Chef America and Feasting on Asphalt and wrote seven books in his spare time. In 2013 he launched a live culinary variety show called The Edible Inevitable tour, which played to sold out theaters across the United States. In the spring of 2016, Brown’s new live show, Eat Your Science, toured forty U.S. cities. Brown also hosts the insanely popular Cutthroat Kitchen on Food Network.

An evolution from Good Eats (or just a departure, depending on your perspective)

One of the things that I've always appreciated about Alton Brown is that he takes the time not just to explain the "how" of cooking, but also the "why". I've always enjoyed AB's sense of humor, pop culture references, and food science nerdism. That said, I kinda felt I had moved on in the gap between the Good Eats books and this.

With EveryDayCook (EDC going forward), AB shows that he has moved on as well. While EDC still contains all the cleverness and food geek knowledge of his previous works, there has been a clear evolution as he has learned more over the years -- both from personal and dietary experience and from techniques he no doubt picked up hosting Iron Chef America. You will find in EDC certain ingredients, tools and methods that may be new to you. For the most part, that's a good thing. While AB certainly doesn't go full-on modernist cuisine, he definitely dips his toe in the pool with such things as the use of a whipping siphon and the use of metric measurements.

Which brings me to one of the issues people may have with this book. In a number of recipes, AB uses metric measurements (which will bother some "traditional" home cooks). In some recipes, he'll use a combination of measurements: quantity (3 eggs), volume (1 cup of milk), and weight (55g clarified butter). If weight is critical to the success of a recipe, then you're going to have to grab that digital scale - ideally accurate to a tenth of a gram. If it's not going to impact the recipe, AB will give you the measurement in the easiest and most convenient way. It sure would have been nice, though, for him to give approximate quantities or volume equivalents when he provides metric weights. When making the apple spice bundt cake, for example, I would have known to have 3 sticks of butter at room temperature to hit the required 336 grams.

Another thing AB does in EDC that may strike some as odd, but after you give it a moment of thought you'll recognize the sense to it, is that he organizes the book in terms of what time of day you'll be eating - breakfast, lunch, dinner, and the times in between. Rather than a section on pork or poultry, he thinks the way most of us do, i.e. "what should we have for dinner?" Furthermore, most of the recipes are not overly complex. AB wants this to be a book you can use any (or every) day. Many times he succeeds; a number of times he does not.

There are some issues I have with these recipes and the way they are presented. Many of them are simply NOT "everyday" recipes. The process for the amaranth wafers took 4 hours from start to finish (more on that below in the "update"). Sadly, the recipes do not list "total time" and "active time" in minutes, so it's hard to be sure of what kind of commitment you're looking at when you start. The recipes are written in paragraph form, with no additional spacing between steps or bolding of the step number, so they sort of blend together into a mass of text. It's almost like AB transcribed his hand-written notes into this cookbook.

This brings me to the photography in EDC, which is a double edged sword. It's wonderful, copious, and pretty amazing that it was all done with a smartphone. Unfortunately, a great many recipes are printed on top of these photos, making the recipes even more difficult to read.

Ultimately, those hoping for Good Eats Volume 4 are going to find themselves wondering "what happened to the Alton I thought I knew?" Those of us who are curious about how AB has personally evolved as a cook over the last handful of years will likely enjoy this book a great deal.

On-Going Updates (Oct 29, 2016): I'll continue to update this review as I work through the recipes, providing my thoughts on those I find note-worthy.

- Amaranth Wafers: Ever have a food that you can't tell if you like or not (you'll say "this tastes interesting"), but then can't stop eating it? That's amaranth wafers. While I'm glad I made these, this is NOT an everyday recipe. You will need to candy some orange peel for this recipe (this takes a while and yields enough for 2 batches of these cookies), and AB's instructions for removing the orange rind strike me as the most difficult way to do it -- at least for this recipe. Further, following the recipe left me with a "batter" that did not stick together at all. Adding an additional egg and 2TBs of butter yielded a batter that held together wonderfully. The first time you make this recipe, expect it to take about 4 hours. At least half of that is "active" time.

- Barley Water: I include this only because it is one of the recipes that AB promotes in one of his recent podcasts. As I drank it, I thought "this reminds me of a home remedy for irregularity". It is essentially a thick, somewhat bland lemonade. Yet strangely, after my first glass, I wanted more. Perhaps my body just craves fiber. Also, I'm not sure why AB recommends a 3 quart pitcher when the yield is around a quart and a half.

- Cold Brewed Coffee (edited 10/29/2016): Wonderful, but if you like iced coffee, just get a Toddy Cold Brew System. It will take you about the same amount of time to brew up an entire pitcher of iced coffee concentrate as it does to make a serving from AB's recipe.

- Scrambled Eggs 3.0: Truly an "everyday" recipe. Super fast, super easy, super yummy. I don't prefer them to Ruhlman's or Blumenthal's double boiler scrambled eggs, but these take a fraction of the time and are still fantastic. This really felt like a "Good Eats" recipe, and I mean that as high praise.

- Apple Spice Bundt Cake: Extraordinary! The flavor of this cake almost defies description. Who'd have thought that you could use rosemary in a cake? The spices blend together so subtly that it would take a sophisticated palate to recognize them all. I thought that a cake that used 3 sticks of butter would have been a little more moist. The next time I make it, I think I'll throw in a little macadamia nut oil. And maybe boost the rum content of the frosting. Also, this is not really an "everyday" recipe, but definitely a great weekend recipe. Between grinding all of our spices, dicing and shredding apple and chopping ginger and pecan, just getting the ingredients prepped took over 30 minutes. But man, oh man, it was worth it.

- Garam Marsalmon Steaks: I have a confession -- I HATE salmon. I pretty much would need to be starving to eat salmon. And yet I found this recipe very edible. I "grilled" these inside on cast iron rather than on a grill, and my wife (who likes salmon) absolutely loved these. The recipe recommends applying the spice blend liberally. I held back a bit and would say that the recipe is right -- the spice blend will not overpower the fish, even if applied like a rub. On cast iron, it forms a wonderful crust. This recipe was very easy and definitely qualifies as "everyday".

- Chicken Parmesan Balls and Weekday Spaghetti: I group these together because of the significant overlap between the recipes (the herb oil and sauce are the same). If you have already prepared the herb oil, both of these become "everyday" recipes (the spaghetti more so). I honestly found the spaghetti sauce a little under-powered, flavor-wise. It tasted "fresh" and "authentic", but I just didn't get the herbal punch from the oil that I had hoped for. Don't be afraid of using two anchovies in the sauce -- I promise that it won't taste fishy. The CPBs were very good, though I think they would be even better formed into patties (more surface area to crust up the panko/parmesan) and made into sandwiches. I also confess that I topped this meal with triple the recommended mozzarella (see the pic), but hey, I'm from Wisconsin.

- "The Last Pizza Dough I'll Ever Need" - Those are AB's words, not mine. While it won't be the last dough I ever need, it certainly makes for an excellent pizza crust. AB has created a recipe that is extremely easy to make, very easy to handle and shape, and achieves the magical crust attributes of being both crispy and chewy. The crust is crisp enough that it doesn't buckle under the weight of ingredients, yet still retains a very satisfying chew. I've made better tasting pizza crust (typically with 00-Antimo Caputo flour) but not by much, and it wasn't as simple as this. This recipe definitely falls under the category of "everyday" assuming you spent 10 minutes the prior day prepping the dough. Be aware that the crust on this recipe goes from "almost done" to "burned" very rapidly. Keep an eye on it.

If you love to make great food, you need this book!

I love Alton Brown's style. And he has loaded his new book with nothing but! Well laid out, easy to follow recipes. And in reading through most of these I find that at the point where I start to think to myself "hmm, I wonder why he would use (insert ingredient or utensil or cooking method here)" sure enough, AB provides an explanation. This is what I love about the way he teaches his cooking. It is what originally made me a fan of the Good Eats TV show. Though I always used to say that Good Eats was the Peewee's Playhouse of cooking shows, so there is a fun side of it too!
This book is complete with detailed sections on his personal favorite pantry items, utensils, methods and bar stock. I've tried a few of the recipes already, and family and friends (and myself) get dazzled every time! This is a book I would recommend to anyone who loves to cook, not only for the good food you get, but as a way to relax, and enjoy a little creativity... that you can share.. and eat!

Another Great Alton Tome

I think I own every book Alton's written, and while I don't always try every recipe, I still enjoy reading them (although his brining turkey is now a family tradition every Thanksgiving). That said, I think this book is going to change that "don't always try every recipe" formula. There's a LOT of great ideas in this book I'm looking forward to dirtying up the kitchen attempting to make. And, as usual, it's still a fun read even if you never pick up a single spatula.

Important and inspirational tale of a young woman who defied slavery

Harriet Tubman has to rate as one of the most amazing heroines in history. A slave born in America in about 1820, (I say about as she never really new her birth date). She was always fired with a stronger will than her 'master' and 'mistress' liked. As a very young girl she was taken to the big house but she never got on with the mistress. She ended up whipped and sent back to be a field hand. She was short, but she worked so hard she soon was capable of doing a mans work. However she never wished to bow her head to any one.

When she was quite young she helped another slave escape and in the process was badly injured. Despite leaving her with sudden sleeping spells she escaped and went on to join the freedom train. Her inspirational way, strength and sheer will made her extremely successful at freeing many others - even when they eventually had to take the 'train' all the way to Canada. She even helped her elderly parents escape.

This is as much a story of slavery in America as this outlines the background of what Harriet was doing. Why she suddenly had to take her 'passengers' beyond the Delaware border to Canada. The wrangling of the slave-owning congress who wanted all slaves returned, that Lincoln refused to allow black troops in the civil war at first - and paid them only 2/3rds of what the white troops were earning.

It also talks about Harriet's life after the end of the civl war and her support of her family, friends and freedmen institutions to better her community.

This is a very well written, informative and entertaining book suitable for 8-12 year olds and I would highly recommend it. It is inpirational - about a girl who would not give up hope and when she could acted on it. I really liked the fact that this story is about someone who actually made change. This is not a glamouress herione, but one who really changed the face of America.

In the beginning of the book Harriet Tubman was planning how to escape from slavery. She worked on a plantation in the south like so many other slaves. Harriet Tubman escaped with another slave and they got caught a white man hit Harriet in the head with a heavy object which caused her to have a concusion. When she got better she tried it again and made it to the north, were she got a job. She went back and got her family and friends. Harriet started making friends on the way that would help her and other slaves escape to the north, so Harriet started going back to the south and freeing slaves. She freed more then 300 slaves over the year.
Also Harriet fought in the army, became a nurse in an Negro hospital and trained other women to be nurses and founded the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. She was a very tall black women that could not read or write. But she did so much for the slaves and to help free them.

An unforgetable masterpiece.

A wonderful book. When I say masterpiece, I mean masterpiece. A brillent true story of a brave young woman who lives in the hearts of children as a role model. When I read the book I felt like I was really there. It is very realistic. Harriet Tubman is an exellent book. Read it!

More Foul and Filthy and Pedophilia Bashing

I'm as liberal and open minded as the next immature, foul-mouthed cretin, but I had to put this slim volume down every twenty minutes and take a shower.
This is some foul, filthy stuff that is right up the Aristocrats alley.
Extremely funny, but not for the weak-hearted or religious crowd.
But with Stanhope, I guess you know what your getting.

Doug Stanhope is my favorite comedian and this is him at his best. He takes to catch a predator to a whole new funny level. Its a quick read but well worth it since i laughed through the entire book, and cried from laughing so hard through the whole book as well.

The SuperHero of Trickery

This book is a twisted version of Dateline: To Catch a Predator. They work with a group called Perverted Justice, an organization dedicated to identifying adults on the internet willing to have chat room sexual encounters with minors. Doug Stanhope is Perverted Justice in real time. He's like an auxiliary police officer on permanent leave determined to root out this evil in the most hilarious way. We all know those cop shows where the cop is tired of the rules and he gets fired from the force and although he's off duty he still tracks down the criminal? This is Fun with Pedophiles: The Best of Baiting. Doug Stanhope hunts them down with a mouse and keyboard and drills everything into their head that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. Let's face it if Dateline can find a pedophile that easy so can Doug Stanhope. Fun with Pedophiles is a masterful collection of real world transcripts from the superhero of trickery. I got the feeling that every pederast Doug chatted with was left in such a state of confusion they crawled into a corner and began babbling incoherent word syllables until they were unable to feed themselves. This book is raw comedic genius. It's reality TV in book form with gut splitting laughter, ironic justice and of course the psychotic humor of Doug Stanhope.

I have three aims for this book. The first goal is to teach you the vocabulary and grammar of predicate logic so that you will be able to translate the sentences of English (or other natural languages) into the notation of this important branch of symbolic logic. The second goal concerns three techniques for evaluating predicate arguments: formal proofs, counterexamples, and truth trees. I aim to help you become proficient in employing these logical methods. The third goal of the book is to develop your ability to identify and assess those predicate arguments you encounter daily as you read books and newspapers, carry on conversations, and watch television. Most of the examples and exercises in the text involve arguments of this everyday variety.

I enjoyed writing the book. If you enjoy studying it (as I hope you will), I think my goals will be achieved.

This text presupposes familiarity with propositional logic and, in particular, acquaintance with the natural-deduction approach to formal proofs and the technique of two-sided truth trees. Appendix One contains a review of this material, but it is too compact to be fully intelligible to the complete novice. A discussion of these techniques is provided in the companion volume, Introduction to Logic: Propositional Logic, revised third edition.

Predicate logic is developed gradually in this book, starting with the simplest monadic symbolizations and proceeding through multiple quantification to the logic of relations. Students learn to symbolize and evaluate arguments of a given degree of complexity before addressing the symbolization of more complex problems.

The formal-proof. system presented here does not include a universal-quantifier introduction rule. The advantages of this approach are that the quantifier rules can be stated more simply and that proofs (although often longer) are often easier to devise. A universal-quantifier introduction rule is provided in a footnote at the start of section 4.2 to accommodate students of teachers who prefer to include this rule.

Most of the examples and exercises center around arguments similar to those encountered by students. The majority of these arguments are natural, rather than contrived; many are presented by direct quotation from newspapers and other sources. My purposes in employing natural everyday arguments are (1) to evoke the reader's interest, (2) to counter the common but mistaken view that formal logic is just an impractical academic diversion, and (3) to improve students' capacity to notice and assess the arguments they encounter. The final chapter explicitly addresses the problems that arise when predicate logic is applied to natural arguments.

The second edition has been extensively revised. It differs from the first edition mainly in these ways:

* The book has been reorganized to allow students to develop symbolization and proof-construction skills even more gradually.
* There is a chapter on two-sided truth trees. Some instructors prefer to teach one-sided trees; a chapter explaining that technique is included on the CD-ROM disk packaged with the book.
* New sections treat possible-world counterexamples, intensional contexts, quantifier scope, and quantifier order.
* There are more exercises, and most of the original exercises and examples have been replaced by better and more current ones.
* The book is accompanied by a tutorial program, "PredLogic," written by Mark Pospesel and me. This Windows-based software provides an environment in which students symbolize sentences, construct proofs of validity, devise counterexamples, and create truth trees. The program enables students to catch errors as they are made, and it offers hints for solving problems.
* William G. Lycan has provided an appendix on the metatheory of predicate logic.
* This edition uses parenthesis-free quantifier symbols. These symbols have become standard since the first edition was published, and they are more suitable for doing logic on a computer. Gender-neutral language is used throughout. The chapter on logic diagrams (that appeared in the first edition) has been moved to the CD-ROM disk that accompanies the book.

Software works perfect in Windows7 64bit. For as old as the software is, I can tell that it was really well written. I am impressed with this book because of how the author follows and takes off from E.J. Lemmon's book Beginning Logic.
