Amazing book, amazing art!

An amazing book about an amazing artist! You won't believe your eyes! Julian Beever is a pavement chalk artist unlike any other. The drawings shown in this book appear so real, so lifelike, so dimensional, that you sometimes have to look extremely hard to find the sidewalk beneath. I've shown this book to young and old, and no one's been able to stop themselves from gazing in wonder at every page. I'm mesmerized by the pictures and completely intrigued by his techniques and this unique art form. A book you'll pick up again and again and again. Disappointed

I love the artwork of Julian Beever, but I am very disappointed by this book. Certainly, the photographs are of good quality, but they show only the finished picture, which you can all find on the internet. There is only one single picture showing the distortion of the drawing, which you also find on google pictures. The technical explanation has not one single photo to illustrate the working process! I'm really disappointed because I think Julian Beever is a very generous artist, but in his book he seems not to be wanting to reveal his (technical) knowledge- not very generous...

Photographs do not do justice to this mans work. I would dearly love to see the actual works of art. Brilliant. It's a pity that some of the pictures are not shown from a different point of view to see what they actually look like.

Four mismatched Christmas tales

This book contained four holiday romances, each of which I will review separately.

"Santa Unwrapped" by Theresa Alan - 3.5 stars

Aimee Lachaussee volunteers to help pass out gifts to sick children this Christmas, and along the way meets Ryan, a wheelchair bound hottie who has issues. She's attracted to him, but it's almost as if he's afraid to admit that he's attracted to anyone, because of his wheelchair.

The story was pretty good until it came to the end. There was no ending! At least, there was not a satisfactory ending at all. There was no commitment at all. Sex does not equal commitment. Ryan was doubting entering into a relationship at the end, so who knows if the characters ended up together or not. If the author had bothered writing an ending for this story, the story would have gotten a higher rating.

"Maybe This Christmas" by Jane Blackwood - 5+ stars

Ever wish that you could go back in your life and relive an important moment to change its outcome? Laura Randall sure does. We first meet Laura when she is an old woman, dying in the hospital and regretting her life and the mess she made of her children's lives. Her hospital roomie asks her if she'd like to go back and change things, and magically Laura is young again, still married, and her children still love her. Laura only has until Christmas Eve to recapture the love she and her husband once shared.

This was really the only story worth reading in this anthology. Oh, this story was so good! This is probably the best romantic short story I've ever read. It was so emotional and heart-stirring, I didn't want it to end.

"The 24 Days of Christmas" by Linda Lael Miller - 3.5 stars

Addie Hutton returned to her hometown after a scandal destroyed her journalism career. Frank Rayner, her former fiance and now a widowed father, offers to let her live in a house on his property for free. As Addie's step-son and Frank's daughter become friends, Frank and Addie realize that their feelings for one another were still alive.

I think I may have enjoyed this story more had it not been placed after such a warm, emotional romantic story. But since it was, it seemed to fall flat. I didn't get attached to Addie or Frank. This story was fluffy and nice enough, but didn't pack an emotional punch like the previous story.

"A Bright Red Ribbon" by Fern Michaels - 2 stars

Morgan Ames, a surprisingly childish 29 year old, had been waiting for two years for her ex-boyfriend to propose to her. He had dumped her on Christmas Eve, but had promised to propose to her two years later if he felt they were meant to be together. But as Mo tries to return home, she is stranded in a blizzard, rescued by a dog, and holes up with Marcus Bishop. Mo begins to wonder if she really wants Keith to propose to her after all.

This story was the worst of the four. Not only is Morgan incredibly childish (waiting TWO YEARS for her ex-boyfriend to come back to her, with no word at all from him, and knowing that he's sleeping with other women?!), but the characters just seemed incredibly flat. Mo and Marcus were in love with one another, although they didn't even know one another. During the year, they had probably spent less than 48 hours in one another's company, but it was true love for both of them. Yeah, right. Something with the author's writing style didn't click with me - the characters talked a LOT, and there was little description of their feelings or the situation. The characters just didn't talk - they rambled without rhyme or reason.

So, in brief, the only story worth its salt is "Maybe This Christmas" by Jane Blackwood.

Worth buying for one story

I must say that this book is absolutely worth buying for one story- "Maybe This Christmas" by Jane Blackwood. This story is emotional, the characters well thought out, and had a slightly surprising ending (it did not quite have the ending I thought it would, although the ending was very satifying). This is a story about redeeming yourself and second chances. The main character is an old woman who is an alcoholic mess, basically dying in the hospital alone, as her husband long ago divorced her and then died in a car wreck, her daughter is a prostitute who hates her, one son is in prison, and the other joined the army to escape his life with his mother and died. She is granted a second chance of living the weeks leading up to the Christmas where her husband served her divorce papers by her hospital roommate. This "guardian angel" coaxes her to sleep and when she wakes up (feeling hungover) she is young- beautiful and with a new boost of energy- her kids are once again little and relying on her, and her husband is young and alive but distant and cold, as this is what was the end of their marriage. As the protagonist relives the days that led up to the end of her marriage and the destruction of her family she is determined to change the outcome and change her life- giving up the alcohol, spending time with the kids, and trying to be a real wife to her husband. She is not only trying to save her own life, but the life of her husband and kids, since she knows what will become of all of them if things turn out the same way as they did the first time around. This story was extremely moving and I cannot help but thing it would make a wonderful holiday movie.

As for the other 3 stories in this anthology...they were, quite simply, awful. But don't let stop you from buying this book. Buy it and just read "Maybe This Christmas".

betrayed to sell a book

Linda Lael Miller and Fern Michaels are established and good storytellers. Their stories are predictable but written well enough and an enjoyable read. It's too bad that the Fern Michaels story is OLD and the 1st two authors featured appear to be placed to sell their (upcoming) books.....and they cannot approach Miller and Michaels in quality of writing nor story.

Burn uses problems to introduce number theory ideas.

This book is a carefully sequenced set of problems along with answers and a few comments. Burn uses those problems to introduce important number theory ideas. I enjoyed working through the problems to learn more about number theory. Most problems are accessible to those with a good high school mathematics background.

Hollywood Can't Write This Stuff

I recently joined my local AOS society and heard about this book after the author did a meet-and-greet in Daytona Beach. Living in Florida all my life and growing up outside Tampa, I had never heard of this event. I received the Tampa Bay Times every day while this was going on and don't remember ever reading about it. After doing some research on this crazy, not-even-Hollywood-could-write-this-stuff story I had to buy the book. Let me tell you, it didn't disappoint. Being new to the orchiding world, I had no idea how insane the smuggling world is, or how ridiculous the government laws surrounding it are. The writer did an excellent job of introducing all characters, telling the story, and staying unbiased. After reading this book all I can do is shake my head over the whole incident...there are just no words. If you're looking for a great read, even if you're not "into" orchids, I highly recommend you check this one out!

Investigative reporting + true-crime writing = pace and tension of a great detective novel

Investigative journalist Craig Pittman had covered plenty of crazy people by the time he stepped onto the tranquil grounds of Sarasota's Marie Selby Botanical Gardens to report on a case of orchid smuggling in 2003.

There was the triple killer he interviewed on Death Row who took to writing him letters with smiley faces dotting the i's. There was the woman so in love with manatees she left a date to wade into the water with them fully clothed, then tackled a major political campaign on their behalf. Pittman's second book even had crazy in the name: "Manatee Insanity."

But none of that came close to the maniacal obsession to possess and name a new orchid discovered growing on a hillside in northern Peru. The petals of Phragmipedium kovachii stretch up like hot-pink fairy wings poised to soar away with the swollen pouch that makes it a "slipper orchid." The story of how it got to Selby, and how reputable scientists lost their minds in the race to be first to describe it, makes for incredible reading in "The Scent of Scandal: Greed, Betrayal, and the World's Most Beautiful Orchid."

If it were fiction, "The Scent of Scandal" might be skewered for improbability: A Ph.D. taxonomist named Guido who punches out a cop. Not one but two collectors trying to pitch the idea of a wild-orchid-hunter reality show -- starring themselves as the macho leading man.

Pittman is on staff at the Tampa Bay Times, where he has established himself as one of the nation's top environmental reporters. He came to the beat more than 20 years ago on staff at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. Local readers will appreciate his insights into the city's unique history and society scene. He recounts Selby's dazzling Orchid Ball, where in spring 2002, "real estate moguls and mortgage-rate gamblers rubbed shoulders with theater angels and gallery geeks." The revelers could not have imagined the resentments blooming among Selby's "orchid boys" who felt the institution had strayed too far from their showy obsession under then-director Meg Lowman.

Lowman, a renowned rainforest biologist, was out of town when collector Michael Kovach rushed to Selby from Miami International Airport with the prize that would soon be named for him. Those who were on duty at Selby's Orchid Identification Center on the day they now curse could seem to think only of fame. The Selby orchid illustrator's first thoughts: "... great publicity if handled correctly, which would stir the sleeping board members and demonstrate that we actually existed."

The one thing that didn't come to mind: Making absolutely sure that Kovach had legally brought the orchid home from the Peruvian wilds.

Pittman's two previous books are also about vanishing, vulnerable icons of nature -- first wetlands, then manatees -- and our failure to protect them. His incisive reporting leaves the reader astounded by the crass treatment of ecological resources, and taking little comfort in the ability of government to protect them. "The Scent of Scandal" is his best book yet, fusing investigative reporting and true-crime writing to create the pace and tension of a great detective novel.

The reader wishes only for more -- that Pittman would have completed Lowman's story (she landed as director of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh), or that he would have traveled to Peru to write more on orchid history and ecology. "The Scent of Scandal" is not that sort of book because Pittman is a devoted daily newspaper reporter. Florida is lucky to have him as an environmental watchdog. One can only imagine the crazy tale he'll sniff up next.

Finally I can learn Arabic!

I have been taking Arabic in college for two years now. My teacher is great and teaches well, but still I always thought Arabic is way too hard for me, that I can't learn it no matter how hard I tried. But this book changed my whole perspective! This has to be one of the best programs I have used for Arabic thus far. It's set up very simple, it's perfect for beginners in this aspect. There are four books that come with pack, three are course book's that go from Beginner to Advanced and one book is dedicated to only teaching the script. The course books are set up like work books, it will give you a dialogue, grammar points and then exercises. The exercises vary from word searches and translating and vary between extremely easy and extremely hard. There are also quizzes at the end of each chapter to test yourself on your progress. In the beginning, it has a lot of "touristy" phrases but eventually it gets into very useful words. I think one chapter was on food and the week after I completed the chapter, I went to a Lebanese restaurant and was able to order a couple of things in Arabic, which for me was a huge achievement! I have used Living Languages Ultimate Arabic and I thought that was excellent also, but this one I think is a little better. I have to warn you that it is very formal Modern Standard Arabic, so if you are looking to learn a dialect don't bother with this program, but for Modern Standard it is fantastic. Also the audio is very clear and follows the book well. Each course book also features some dialogues that are on the audio. Another feature I love is the online flashcards, so I don't have to waste time making paper ones. I had gotten this book in the summer and this semester have noticed a really big improvement of how I'm doing in my Arabic class. I have to admit the book might not make you fluent in Arabic, but you will have a great head start. I really recommend this book.

Very Effective

There are so many language programs out there. I am very glad I got this one. It is very organized and very effective if you follow the program. I feel I must say nothing is easy so if you are looking for something easy studying a language isn't it. If you are willing to focus and really stop and check out how this program is organized you will be amazed at the way they have written this program. It is a step by step building block upon building block. That is the best way to learn. The audio is very good quality. I heard another program's audio and it was terrible, it made me appreciate this programs audio. As with any CDs it will get scratched somehow or the other sooner or later so I have made back up copies of my CDs.

I have spent a few minutes to make up a sheet for this program. It is a check off sheet. I find this is a great help in keeping track of my studies. I do this because along with this program I do some other online studies too to supplement my studies. I especially had to go outside of this program to get help with the script. I think some people will be great without doing that but I am kind of an extremely thorough person and like to overdo things but that works for me. On this study check off sheet I just followed the course and made it.

DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO SAYS THIS PROGRAM IS NOT GOOD. This really is an awesome program and you will get back even more than you put in. The price cant be beat. The set up of the program makes it very easy to follow and retain. Do not forget to go to their website and play the games and use the flash cards. You will even retain more that way too.

If you wish copy and paste the check off sheet i made below and follow it. Just check off each that apply as you go along the program. Each lesson has two sections. For example lesson 1 has a section titled Vocabulary Builder 1 and another section titled Vocabulary Builder 2, seems like all the lessons are like this. I actually didn't check all the lessons didn't have the time but what I checked that is what I saw. The check off sheet may not make sense to you when you look at it right now but when you get the program and start using it and see how the program is set up it will make sense.

In each section there are a series of lessons building upon each other. I do a check off sheet for each lesson. It feels pretty good to check off what I have done and even better to sign off at the end when I know I have nailed the lessons. Yea. I sign my check off sheet. It feels good to know its done and sealed in my memory. So have fun and best wishes on your arabic studies.

Absolutely Wonderful

I am new at the Arabic language. I originally spent a fair amount of time studying Persian, but I decided with the vast majority of Arabic speakers that this was a language I wanted to learn. I plan to take classes in the future and wanted to get a big head start on this language. The product has extremely surpassed my expectations. I was hesitant to purchase the complete edition because I felt intimidated by the Arabic language and thought I may require the platinum edition. After going halfway through the script guide (which is very easy to understand) I can honestly say I can read the majority of MSA words if I sound them out. I am very impressed because I have only spent a few days using the script guide and already am seeing my reading improve. The CD's included are also very nice and clear sounding. If you are a motivated learner I do not think you will require the platinum edition. For only $28.73 you really don't have much to lose. I am excited to continue using these books daily and watch my skills get better. I will recommend this product to anybody studying MSA.
