About the Author
B. P. Lathi holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and was previously a Professor of Electrical Engineering at California State University, Sacramento. He is the author of eight books, including Signal Processing and Linear Systems, 2nd edition (2004) and Modern Digital and Analog Communications Systems, 4th edition (2009, with Zhi Ding).

Roger A. Green is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Dakota State University. He holds a PhD from the University of Wyoming. He is co-author, with B. P. Lathi, of Signal Processing and Linear Systems, 2nd edition.

Great book with shortcomings

Since my undergraduate days more than 40 years ago, I have been a fan of Professor Lathi's books. In general they cannot be beat for clarity, lucid explanations, and solid example problems. For these reasons they are excellent for reference and self-study. Unfortunately, this book falls somewhat short when compared to his others. First, there are some inconsistencies of some definitions from earlier books to this one. For example in 'Signal Processing & Linear Systems' the Sinc function is defined as Sin(x)/x, here it is defined as Sin(Pi x)/(Pi x). Both are legitimate definitions just not consistent from one book to the other. My other major gripe is that there is no answer key to the example problems at the back of each chapter. There are for the Drill problems but these are sparse. For those who use a book for self-study problem answers are critical for complete understanding of the material. Answer keys are usually only available for course instructors. The usual answer for this is that instructors need the answers so that they can use them for homework or exam problems. Any instructor who cannot make up their own test problems should look for another line of work. One star off for the issue of definitions and one star for lack of an answer key.

I absolutely loved learning from this book. The topics covered are thoroughly explained with vivid examples and practice problems. The MATLAB integration makes learning DSP very exciting and applicable! My DSP course was one of my favorites because of this book. I would highly recommend it!

A very useful guide for a cornerstone certification

The last time I took the Java Programmer's Certification was for Java 1.4. Autoboxing didn't exist yet, everybody was still using StringBuffers, and the certification was administered by Sun, not Oracle. 12 years later, I have a ton of practical Java experience, but I felt like it was time for a refresher course. Libraries and APIs are easy to look up on the fly (thanks Google!) and therefore not as important to memorize. However language fundamentals absolutely must be ingrained into the professional Java developer's mind.

This study guide reminded me very much of the guide I used for the 1.4 test (a guide that I was very happy with, but forget the name of.) This Java SE 8 guide focuses on the language fundamentals required by the certification, providing well-reasoned examples and very useful sample questions. The writing is very straight-forward and easy to understand.

I believe all Java developers should take this certification--not because the Programmer 1 certification itself is critical, but because:

1) the higher level certifications _are_ useful and this one is a prerequisite, and
2) knowing the basics of the Java language is what separates the so-so developers from the great developers.

Good cert book, good general Java book

I've been reading the OCA Java 8 book both as a general refresher on Java and in preparation for the exam. I really like this book; here is why:
1) Concise yet readable style. Complicated concepts are explained simply and intuitively, obscure edge cases pointed out as such, and, well, it's fun to read, which matters in a certification book (the genre normally tends to double as non-medical sleeping aid).
2) The book started with a self assessment. I've been programming Java since 2002, and this was a humbling experience -- I proceeded to get half of the questions wrong. Ego issues aside, this was great because it made me pay more attention to the sections that I knew I did not get right.
3) Portability. The pages are mercifully thin, the book is a paperback -- I can actually carry it around. I've lifted the old Java6 SCJP book (effectively a nerdy coffee table book, precisely 2 inches thick and printed on heavy stock), so I would say that making a portable cert book is an accomplishment. Granted, it helps that the exam got split up into 2 parts -- there is a lot less to cover for OCA. Still, this book feels to be less than a quarter of the McGraw-Hill SCJP tome weight.
4) Examples. Lots and lots of examples. The best way to find out that you don't understand something is to trace an example and go, "what? no, that's not what should happen", and then read the section the second time and realize that yes, that's exactly what should happen.
5) Detailed explanations of self-assessment questions. This book does not just tell you "the answer was A, B and F", it tells you why all the other answers were wrong, in excellent detail.

Overall, I am very pleased with the book. It says very early on that it's not meant to be a beginning Java book, but I don't see why not. It's readable enough to be a first book, and it includes enough obscure Java features that it's still interesting for an experienced programmer.

Edited: I've since passed the test, and in my opinion, the best way to study is this:
1) Read the book, do exercises at the end of each chapter and make sure to understand which ones you got wrong and why.
2) Do all exercises again within two weeks of the test; it's great review, and, hopefully, you should no longer have many incorrect answers. But again, make sure you know which ones are wrong and why.
3) Read chapter summaries the day before (I did that on the train, but the day before would have been ideal).

The test was actually easier than book exercises, but I consider that a good thing on part of the book authors.

Honestly it's not a bad book, but be forewarned that there are examples and information that are incorrect. I would normally have given it four stars, but I expected higher quality from a book that is here to help you have a certain baseline of training.

Simple Kindness

This is a bound and published edition of Saunders' commencement speech at Syracuse University in 2013. You could certainly complain that it's not really a "book", that it was originally published in the New York Times, and that it is very brief.

But it's worth reading.

What advice do you give to graduating students? Often it's about how to succeed in the world -- e.g., find something you love to do and do it. And there have been memorable commencement speeches of that type. Some go beyond that, e.g., the speech that Steve Jobs gave to graduating Stanford students in 2005.

Saunders gives a very simple message -- be kind.

He asks himself what he regrets in his own life, from the vantage point of decades that the students he is talking to haven't experienced yet. And the thing that he identifies is his indifference toward a girl in his school when he was young. He wasn't mean to her, but he ignored her when she needed kindness.

I can certainly think of the missed opportunities in my life when I wasn't kind to someone -- it would have taken so little. My life won't be any the less for having missed that last jump shot in the final seconds of a basketball game. It will be less for having turned away from someone who I could have helped have a better life. Few of us can say that we've kept the right balance of self-interest and kindness.

I've read criticisms of Saunders' speech, that he ignores the material difficulties facing students who graduate from college today, with poor employment opportunities and often carrying heavy college loan debts on into their distant futures. I would imagine those things weigh more heavily on their minds than whether or not they are kind persons. But Saunders' message is one from a vantage point he knows is decidedly not that of his audience but one he feels they could profit from -- it is better to decide what matters in your life before you are looking back on it.

I'd give the book 5 stars for content, but I'm giving it 4 as a "product" -- the speech itself is (and should be) available for free in a number of places, including video. I bought the book because . . . well, I buy George Saunders' books. I do like the idea that others have mentioned, of giving the book as a gift.

On the importance of kindness

George Saunders is a professor of English at Syracuse University and a writer of short stories, essays, novellas and children's books. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker and Harper's, among other publications.

In 2013, Saunders delivered the convocation speech at Syracuse University for the class of 2013, and shared it with The New York Times where it was reprinted with his permission.

In April of 2014 the speech was published by Random House in this little book. Mr. Saunders argues that "as a goal in life, you could do worse than: Try to be kinder." He understands that we all have ambitions for fame, fortune and love but urges us as much as possible to: "err in the direction of kindness. Do those things that incline you toward the big questions, and avoid the things that would reduce you and make you trivial."

Although the entire graduation speech appears in The New York Times, the book is beautifully produced. The speech takes only about 15 minutes to read but each word carries weight and meaning. It is a speech to savor and re-read often. Although the speech is available online, I recommend buying the book. But in any event, the speech is absolutely worth reading.

This is one of the best and most thorough books on faux finishing, in the traditional sense, now available on the market. It should be on your shelf alongside PROFESSIONAL PAINTED FINISHES by Marx, FOLK FINISHES by Teles, and DECORATIVE FURNITURE FINISHES WITH VINEGAR PAINT by Russell. In fact, check out the others and add them to your collection of sources while visiting AMAZON as your local bookseller probably will not have them. I would also recommend this book for scenic designers/painters as a basis to your artwork and jumping off point for your creativity. Once you have these basics, all excellently illustrated, you will be able to do just about anything.

I've been a faux finishing for many years, having taken many classes to pursue an expert level of finishing. I have used this book to do some Old World wall finishes, including faux stone and some varied applications of glaze and texture. This book is a keeper. I enjoy the resource section so that we can find the same products. Many times people substitute products for what they find cheaper in the big box hardware stores. I've made that mistake in the past and regretted it after being disappointed in the outcome or the application. I recommend this book for those who have some experience, or that you are ready to do your homework and practice to understand the way professionals and contractors use paint and tools. I am very pleased with this used book purchase
