Great Text Book

This is a great text book, very thorough and well organized. I particularly liked how key terms and concepts were highlighted and defined in the margins, it made studying less intense and helped me get a B in my Management course.

Unfortunately, I paid for this book and never received it from the Amazon merchant who "sold" it to me. He wrote me twice saying he would send it but it never arrived, so I had to borrow a friend's copy instead. This is the last time I'll buy ANYTHING on Amazon.

Within the context of business processes, Ainsworth/Deines is organized by planning for activities, performing those activities (in other words, capturing them in the financial statements), and finally, evaluating those business activities. 3. An organization around the Statement of Cash Flows first focusing on Operating Activities (what is my business, my product, who are my customers?) and then Financing and Investing Activities (how do I fund my business, how do I expand, what are the financial risks, etc?).

ALCOHOLIC AMNESIA

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN is a dark, haunting and depressing psychological thriller, but it's incredibly effective thanks to the writing skills of author Paula Hawkins. Rachel is a divorced woman who would do anything for a drink, and like a lot of folks consumed by a love affair with the bottle, one might call her a victim of circumstances. Her husband Tom had an affair that resulted in a pregnancy. He divorced Rachel, married the "other woman" and now all three (husband, wife and child) are happily ensconced in the house that was once Rachel's.

The train that Rachel rides to London each day takes her past her old neighborhood. From the window of the train she observes not only her old garden that backs up to the tracks, but also the daily activities of another couple who reside down the street from her previous home. In her imagination she has given the couple names and has created a fairy tale love life for them. Real life, however, cannot live up to her fantasy and the couple does not have the picture perfect relationship that Rachel has concocted. When a murder occurs, Rachel becomes entangled in the investigation because of what she has witnessed on her daily commute.

This rather bleak story with intersecting timelines is told from the viewpoint of three different women Rachel, Anne and Megan. All the women are unreliable narrators with something to hide. In fact, most of the characters in this novel, including the men, lack veracity, and are a self-serving and unsympathetic group with plenty of skeletons in their closets.

Lest I continue and divulge too much of the plot, let me just say that the twists and turns in the story are many and readers will be easily drawn in, making it easy to devour this book in one afternoon.

Baffled by Its Success

I think I would ordinarily cut this book more of a break because it is fast-paced - Hawkins wastes zero time describing anything that doesn't have to do with exactly what is going on in the moment - and while that doesn't make her a great writer, there is absolutely nothing here that will transcend, or reverberate within you long after you've finished reading - it at least doesn't bog you down with preciousness. But because the book has received so many rave reviews - I have to judge it more harshly because it just isn't deserved. This is serviceable writing at best - about the level you'd read on Fiction Press - about the level you would get from a first year MFA student. If someone is digging around in something, they are 'scrabbling' (over and over). The lead character's blackouts are along the lines of: "I couldn't remember. It was all dark. All black. All cloudy. Couldn't remember." I'm making that up, but it's not significantly different. So, that's the writing, let's get to the plot.

The book is told from the POV of three different female characters, none of them compelling in the slightest. We're supposed to care deeply that a woman who chronically cheats on her husband disappears. I really didn't care that she did, frankly. Then we're supposed to care that Rachel, who drinks too much on the train while she pretends to commute to a job she doesn't have and obsesses about her ex-husband and her 'barren womb', may or may not have witnessed a crime. I didn't care about Rachel, didn't care about the woman who'd gone MIA. Now let's get to the third character you can't care about - Anna. I don't even remember her place in the story I cared about her so little. Oh, right, she's the woman who is responsible for the breakdown of Rachel's marriage and is now married to Rachel's ex, Tom.

As others have noted, the three female characters have little to discern them from each other, and speak in a nearly identical voice - except one of them drinks. All three lament about men - constantly. They seem to have no other life interests - not one has a hobby, a job, or anything compelling her forward from day to day that doesn't have to do with a guy. (The guys all turn out to be jerks.)

I suppose people like this do exist, I'm just not sure why I'm supposed to care about them - or why anyone else did, or how this book got to be so popular. I've heard it was compared to Gone Girl but other than both having a missing woman at the core, and 'Girl' in the title, there seems to be no comparison whatsoever.

The 'twist' isn't a twist in the slightest, just the reveal of the missing woman's murderer, and it's exactly who, about three-fourths of the way through (and I'm not good at guessing twists), you suspect it is. Then the 'reveal' is the guy confessing he did it in a speech you'd hear some cartoonish villain give in a super hero movie or soap opera. That kind of 'Bwahahaha I did it!' thing. Very convenient.

But I guess the biggest thing that bothered me was that the entire crux of the story is based on the idea that Rachel has an alcoholic blackout - and the author explains (twice) that when you are having an alcoholic blackout, your brain does not create memories - so there is nothing to 'remember'- but then lo and behold she suddenly has a memory breakthrough, and solves the crime. I thought she wouldn't have been creating memories? It's as if the author wrote half her book, then decided to do some research (googling) and when she found research that blatantly contradicted the plot point her book hinges on, decided "Oh, what the heck, I'll keep writing" and then decided to INCLUDE her research. And her editor didn't notice or (more likely) didn't care.

A couple of other things an editor (if this book had one) should have picked up on: Much is made of a pile of clothes by the train tracks - so much so that the book opens with a description of them - the importance of the clothes? None. Zip. Zero. And there's a red haired man who keeps popping up - muttering esoteric things - we assume he will be integral to the mystery. Nope, he just disappears.

Other stuff I could complain about but it would be spoilery. It seems if books are bought by book clubs, they become huge sellers, no matter how evisceratingly terrible (witness 50 Shades of Grey).

Here's one thing I admire the author for: She wrote this book in four months (it shows) and it became a HUGE bestseller. Awesome for her. So few authors ever make it to that level - even with stunningly well-written books - so kudos to her for whatever alchemy happened to guarantee she's got some money to retire on.

The book's opening chapters grabbed and held my interest. Then my interest began waning and quickly was transformed to annoyance, impatience, outright irritation and finally, full-blown dislike. I ended up really disliking this book. I thought the plot was so implausible and contrived - and, of course, many suspense/mystery novels are implausible and contrived, but this is yet another one of the type that has no foot in reality - as to be unacceptable. It veered into absurdity. More than that, however, was my increasingly intense dislike for all of the characters - every single one of them, but probably most of all, the main character, Rachel. I found her alcoholism, her black-outs, her laxity, her passivity, her strange behavior even outside of her alcoholic binges, everything about her just repugnant. But that was true of every character for different reasons and to varying degrees of dislike. The stylistic technique of alternating "voices" was OK and the different female characters represented in those voices were fairly well distinguished, enough so as to follow "their chapters." One thing that I did appreciate, and it stands on contrast to "Gone Girl", was the absence of detailed, specific, "graphic" sexual material. There were indirect references but we weren't forced into the beds, bodies and minds of people in sexual encounters - and I appreciated that! I didn't find any obvious type or similar types of editing errors, also appreciated. I thought the basic style and quality of writing was OK, outside of plot. Character development was OK, but they were just so thoroughly unlikeable and unlikely, in my opinion.
2016 has been a year that for me, as an enthusiastic reader, has been a year in which I have learned to distrust blurbs, critics, and reviews in general. I have read too many books this year that were glowingly reviewed, best-selling, even award nominees - and yet left me thinking: where have all the great novels gone? Do I have to return to beloved books of the past and re-read?
Apparently plenty of people like this book a lot. I'm not one of them.

HOOK

What’s a screenplay? Good question. After all, if you’re going to write one, you ought to know the answer. Right?

You probably already know an answer. A screenplay is writing intended to be turned into film. It’s a hundred-odd pages held together by brass brads, in which you have written down whatever you want the audience to see and hear in your movie.

If it gets made, the director will come up with a whole new vision, the actors will change your dialogue, the editor will concoct another way to order the scenes, and it won’t be "your movie" any more. That’s okay. A screenplay is not a complete work. It is not intended to be appreciated on its own. If a movie were a building, a screenplay would be the blueprint. Nobody settles down in front of a roaring fire with her beloved, a bottle of Chianti, and a nice blueprint. Nobody takes a couple of good screenplays out to the beach — outside of show business, anyway.

That means there is no point writing a screenplay if it isn’t going to get produced.

We all know that, somewhere in the back of our minds, but most of the thousands of screenplays I’ve read in ten years as a development executive were never in any danger of being made into a movie. From the moment the writer conceived them, they were doomed. They may have been well-crafted or poorly crafted, but they were all missing what they needed in order to get made.

This book is about writing movies that get made. Not just popular movies. Art films get made, too. Writing a screenplay that will make a brilliant movie is a good part of writing a movie that will get made, and that’s what most of this book is about. But that’s not all of it. So it’s important to understand what else a screenplay is, if you’re going to go to all the trouble of writing one, because if you don’t, the odds are you’re wasting your time.

The Business of the Craft

It's show business, folks. And in Alex Epstein's book, "Crafty Screenwriting" the emphasis is on the word "business". As someone who has been a development executive, Epstein reminds writers of the bigger picture: a screenplay is just one element in a deal. The screenplay doesn't get made until other elements come together in a package that includes a producer, a director and the star and serious money. He urges the aspiring screenwriter to write his story with the goal of making it an effective selling tool, a catalyst to getting a deal done. Otherwise the chances of the script actually seeing the projector light in the darkness of a movie theater are slim to none.

And how to make the script an effective sales tool? First, says Epstein, it needs a great hook. A hook is the concept of the story in a nutshell that grabs attention and makes people want to know how it turns out. The marketing people come up with hooks called taglines to grab your attention when a movie is released. You need to come up with a hook to grab the attention of a Hollywood player to get the movie made.

Quite bluntly, Epstein says, "If your story does not have a hook, you are probably wasting your time writing the screenplay."

So, how to come up with a hook? Epstein offers some suggestions, but like everything else in the creative process, there is no sure-fire formula. After the hook he discusses the title - "Your title is the most important phrase in your entire script", the pitch, the query letter. At the end of the book is a chapter on getting an agent, getting copyright protetion for your work plus two appendices, one a sample option deal, the other a sample of screenplay pages properly formatted.

The bulk of the book is devoted to discussing the nuts and bolts of writing: plot, characters, action, dialogue, etc. Along the way he tilts at a few windmills: one section is titled "The Myth of the Three-Act Structure."

Does Epstein have any new gems of insight about them that haven't been revealed in a dozen other books? Not really, but if I had to recommend books on the particular topics of character, action and dialogue, this book would make my short list. Because he discusses the tried and true clearly and succintly with occasional twists of thought and turns of phrase that cast the tried and true in a new light in this reader's mind. And throughout his discussion, he never loses sight of the goal: punching up the script to make it a more marketable property. As the subtitle of the book says: "Writing Movies That Get Made" -- not just written.

If you're interested in writing scripts as vessels in which to pour your heart, your soul, your unappreciated genius, the ultimate truth of being that only you comprehend -- this book isn't for you. But if you subscribe to the notion that screenwriting is a business as well as a craft, then this is a book you will profit from.

Simply put - I'm glad I bought this book.

I'm completely new to the "craft" of screenwriting, and I think there's nothing wrong with a book that starts at square one for people like me. I think the book is well-written, and it seems to have been carefully proofread and edited (you'd be surprised by the mistakes I've found in other books). I like how Epstein talks about both the business side of writing and selling screenplays as well as the actual skills and strategies you need to write them. I need to know about both. He makes his points clearly and concisely - he doesn't use five pages to say something that can be said on one page. Makes for a quicker read, without sacrificing information.

Specifically, Epstein covers these topics:

1. Coming up with a "Hook," an exciting idea that can grab the attention of both show business people and audiences.

2. Working out your Plot.

3. Developing your Characters.

4. Writing Action into your scenes.

5. Crafting appropriate screenplay Dialogue.

6. Understanding different movie Genres.

7. Getting writing Help as you learn to improve your scripts.

8. Rewriting and rewriting until you get a great script.

9. Getting your script made into a movie by working with agents, development execs, producers, and the general business of Hollywood.

I read a criticism on one of the previous reviews that pretty much disparages Epstein for only having one writing credit in movies. I don't know what that person's copy of Crafty Screenwriting says, but the cover of my copy reads, "A development executive's real-world approach..." In other words, Epstein never claims you should listen to him because he's a super-accomplished writer with many credits. But he is a development executive. And it's very important to know how development executives think and what they want to see in screenplays. So I think his opinion is valuable.

When I first decided to pursue screenwriting, I thought I had the right idea of how I should proceed and how show business worked. Turns out I was wrong on both counts! If you're just starting out, and you want to know the basics of the business of movie development and the foundations of screenwriting theory, I absolutely recommend this book. But get some highlighters! There's a lot to learn!

Wish I'd had this book in film school

Finally, a book about screenwriting that isn't drudgery to read. When I was a film student, the screenwriting books I was assigned made the whole process seem more arcane than French grammar. Epstein's book is about how to tell stories that people will want to see on the screen, and reading it is like talking to a very smart, funny person.
He's absolutely right about how scripts need to have a hook to get made, and he explains for the uninitiated how those occasional movies without hooks actually got made (by being a bestselling novels first, being the pet project of a movie star, etc.)
Buy this book. It's a fun read, and it will help you figure out what's wrong with your screenplay (and will save you endless hours of frustration if your hook-less story is doomed to be unproducable).

Great companion to SOM text book.

I have been a student of Science of Mind or Religious Science for nearly a decade now. It is a faith and a philosophy that makes sense, sheds light and while still Christian based (founder Ernest Holmes felt this faith was Christian as he quotes Christ most often, but many a disillusioned Christian would argue that most Christian faiths and SOM have very little in common as SOM strives to be dogma-free), embraces all beliefs. For that is what it is all about: "It is done unto you as you believe". 365 SOM gives me great comfort every morning as I start my day. This wonderful metaphysical book of mini-essays is the best daily guide out there for New Thought folks.

It helps to be familiar with Holmes' writings because these daily prayers and explanations complement his works. I enjoy these because I try to begin each day reading a little from the Bible, then on to Holmes' Bible Explanations book, then read the spiritual guidance for the day from this book. Somehow, the 3 books seem to meld together and even if I skip a day or two of reading and then get back to the mind "work", the daily advice is still right on target. More often than not, I'll read a passage in the Bible, go on to the Bible Explanations book and then read the passage from this daily book and the books somehow relate to one another. I'm surprised that this occurs so frequently. Must be a sign that the spirit world is indeed alive and knows what we need to hear and when we need it.

This is an excellent book for new members being introduced to the Science of Mind philosophy. Our church recently had a "New Member Orientation" which we gave the book to our new members as gifts and to be used as a book for fuure reference.

Addtinally, as mentioned in my review with you and A1 books, I ordered the books used and did not pay close attention to the estimated delivery date. When I notifid you that the books were needed by a certain date, they were indeed delivered in time and in A-1 condition for used books!. The situation was handled in a most professioonal and timely manner and we were able to pesent our program as originally scheduled.

The seven theoretical and interpretive essays in this volume each advocate reconfiguring, rather than abandoning, the concept of culture. Similarly, they all suggest that a theory which depends on the interested action of social beings—specifically practice theory, associated especially with the work of Pierre Bourdieu—requires a more developed notion of human agency and a richer conception of human subjectivity. Ortner shows how social theory must both build upon and move beyond classic practice theory in order to understand the contemporary world.

Some of the essays reflect explicitly on theoretical concerns: the relationship between agency and power, the problematic quality of ethnographic studies of resistance, and the possibility of producing an anthropology of subjectivity. Others are ethnographic studies that apply Ortner’s theoretical framework. In these, she investigates aspects of social class, looking at the relationship between race and middle-class identity in the United States, the often invisible nature of class as a cultural identity and as an analytical category in social inquiry, and the role that public culture and media play in the creation of the class anxieties of Generation X. Written with Ortner’s characteristic lucidity, these essays constitute a major statement about the future of social theory from one of the leading anthropologists of our time.

"Football Scouting Methods" explains the scouting strategies and insights of author Steve Belichick, considered by many to be the ablest football scout of his era. He coached the U.S. Naval Academy football team for 33 years and played for the NFL's Detroit Lions before World War II. A New York Times headline described him as the "Coach Who Wrote the Book on Scouting" and stated that Houston Texans General Manager Charley Casserly described "Football Scouting Methods" as "the best book on scouting he had ever read."

THE quintessential book on football scouting

If you are, hope to be, or want to learn about football scouting, you are doing yourself & the job itself a complete disservice if you do not own a copy & have read (multiple times) this quintessential book on the subject of football scouting. I am straight up not overselling this book AT ALL & any scout that has read this book will almost surely tell you the same thing. Written decades before anyone (outside of maybe college football coaches/scouts) ever knew of or cared about anyone named Belichick, this book was known in scouting circles as THE book on the topic. Well written, concise, easy to follow & incredibly pragmatic in it's methods. Just like the Belichick men themselves.

Great football book

This book is great for anyone trying to learn how to scout a team. Obviously this book was written a long time ago and the game has changed very much since then. However the information on how to scout a team is still highly relevant. The formations shown in diagrams will not be seen in today's game, but that doesn't matter since the diagrams were not meant to show the formations that you will see but how to sketch the formations that you do see. The names of some position have also been changed, but it is quite easy to realize who he is talking about in the terms we use today. Steve Belichick is a great football mind and this is a great football book.

an absolutely outstanding and highly entertaining series that has kept me on the edge of my seat!

Masquerade is a wonderfully intimate and highly charged view of Jakob’s perspective from his part in the delightfully complex mystery that surrounds Bianca London and the people of Bradley, Inc. There is never a dull moment in the action, and we find that the twists and turns are always in a state of constant flux. Not even Jakob is able to keep up with all of the players and their shifting roles. This causes the danger levels to increase exponentially and his list of trusted individuals to dwindle down to one surprising person – Bianca. No one is as they seem, and the stakes are rising higher with each passing second.

Jakob is not an innocent bystander. He has his own sinister plan set in motion to expose the person who he believes Bianca to be. What he doesn’t understand is his unwanted yet uncontrollable pull to her. The closer he gets to her the most confused he becomes as his previous judgement doesn’t line up with what he continues to find out about her. One thing is true, he will stop at nothing to find out the truth about Bianca. However, he must understand that no man can control every aspect of their lives. Somewhere along the way, his control will slip and he may just find himself at the mercy of another.

I knew that Jakob was never who he claimed to be. He was dangerous and ruthless, and yet for all of his power, he was helpless when it came to Bianca. It was her genuinely good heart that won him over and showed him that no everyone was out to get him. While she was a pawn in a deadly game of chess, she showed him that she was not her parents. What I loved was that the vulnerability that he kept tightly hidden was slowly exposed at her obvious innocent nature. He couldn’t help that he truly wanted to protect her more than he wanted to destroy her. Something about her called to him in a way that no other woman besides his mother ever had. She was different, special, and meant for only him. However, no matter the power and force of their attraction, neither would truly open their hearts to the other for fear of losing more than they could ever afford to give.

J. S. Cooper has created an absolutely outstanding and highly entertaining series that has kept me on the edge of my seat! I can’t get enough of this highly complex storyline and this eclectic cast of such incredible characters. I am counting down the days until the last book of this series is out and we finally are able to see just how deep the rabbit hole goes. This is a highly addictive and brutally wicked suspense series that will leave your head spinning and your senses in overload.

Oh Jakob... what are you up to?? That is the question everyone wants to know right?? What has spun in Jakobs live to have him where he is now. Well Masquerade gives us that up close and personal pre island view of Jakob. It is such a great insight as to what he is thinking and what his plan is. Do we know all the answers? NO! Do we understand him a bit more? YES! Do I still love him so very much?!?? YES!!! I cannot wait for Resolution when everything is said and done and we finally get all our answers but until then this was a nice treat to see what some of his motives are...
