Liam FitzPatrick is Joint Managing Partner of Agenda Strategies, an organization specializing in change communications. He is one of the co-authors of the definitive competency model for internal communicators and co-founded the Black Belt series of training for internal communicators. He was previously Head of Practice in Internal Communications for Bell Pottinger and has worked both in-house and for major consulting companies, delivering communications programs for clients in different sectors. He is a Fellow of the UK Chartered Institute of Public Relations where he has been involved in planning the education and training of PR practitioners and is a member of the Global Certification Council of the International Association of Business Communicators.
Klavs Valskov is Joint Managing Partner of Agenda Strategies, an organization specializing in change communications. He has worked in PR, marketing and communication for almost fifteen years with organizations such as L'Oreal, Accenture and in ministries for the Danish Government. From 2008-2013 he was the award-winning Global Director of Communication in the world's largest container shipping company, Maersk Line. Some good, some bad

This book is okay and the authors make some good points. Some parts are a bit preachy and there are some complete time wasting parts. For example - a whole chapter dedicated to whether internal communications should sit in HR or marketing. This is a strategic decision made well above the pay grade of any ordinary communications advisor. There is no reason to put this in the book. The book states that this is a topic frequently debated - in ten years of internal communications experience I have never once heard it debated. It's just not an issue!

This book is written by academics with limited exposure to real world corporate communications. However there are still some useful bits and it's still with buying.

Hopefully the second edition will include crisis communications too!

About the Author
One of the most gifted and challenging composers of our time, Pierre Boulez (b. 1925) has achieved equal status as a conductor, notably of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and New York Philharmonic, and at Bayreuth. He is the founder and director of the world-renowned IRCAM Institute in Paris and of the associated Ensemble Intercontemporain. Richard Stokes has published books on German, French and Spanish song, and his singing translations of Berg's Wozzeck and Lulu, and Wagner's Parsifal have met with critical acclaim. He collaborated with Alfred Brendel on his volume of poems, One Finger Too Many (Faber) and, more recently, The Veil of Order (Faber).

wonderful sets of questions,more on point than previous

"I began composing the works, and then found the technique to conduct them"
Boulez's activism, his affinity for modernity always had a content, an aspect of directedness, of finding/locating the shortest distance between two points. And Cecile Gilly's questions here seem commonplace yet they excite quite provocative answers. Of course one must see a work in rehearsal with Boulez in order to find this "sortest distance" ourselves, as those available with his own"Notations" being prepared. But short of that. . .
Here the interviews have a chronology,and we learn for Boulez with his youthful beginnings in the Fifties it engaged the presentation of the best possible performance of the products of modernity,of activism as well for the cause of the new.He speaks here of his learning processes acquired/formulated quite directly in attendance of rehearsals of Hans Rosbaud and Roger Desormiere, later Otto Klemperer in his last years in London. Klemperer actually phoned Boulez requesting permission to attend a Boulez rehearsal of his works.Boulez's humanism is wonderful to think about that he openly admits he had no orchestral technique of writing effectively for the orchestra during the earlier part of this career. Now he has the maturity,experience and retrospection to re-vise these works, as the "Le Visage Nuptial" and "Les Soliel Des Eaux". These were works that had an "overdetermined" polyphony.
We encounter these problems today in learning the modernist language for there still is a shortage of interpreters of the New.The last part here is "Transmitting knowledge" which is really the content of conducting and learning music as well. There is a section on young conductors where the skills during a Master Class become readily apparent. Boulez says, young conductors are first and foremost are concerned with themselves, not the work, their own means and work habits. Go after the problems of the work,appreciate the timbre and the structure, Why is it unique and interesting? not how one will interpret it.
For conducting we know that there was no work within the modernist repertoire that Boulez did not dare to try.This is how he claimed territory,and acquired technique. No others cared to have this affinity for the new for the Star-System of conductors was in place throughout the Fifties and Sixties...at least in the USA.But there is a modest appraisal of time and place that emerges here in these interviews, that of problems of performance,the technique of it, of balance of orchestral forces and timbre. Boulez says here that most conductors don't have a deep appreciation for the timbre of things, of the music, more the gesture,its effect on the populace,and music is finding solutions of interpretation of projecting timbre, sound colours , and finding them takes time and emerges only within a process of change and contemplation. The first performances of Alban Berg's "Wozzeck" for example in Paris, where some 31 rehearsals were requested by Boulez, or Debussy's "Pelleas et Melisande",the repertoire of Webern, Schoenberg, and Stravinsky.On Schoenberg and the problems there Boulez says(to paraphrase) yes Schoenberg had known the effects of timbre, but in his music it is more a function of the motive, where it goes and its demise within the orchestra. Whereas Stravinsky loved sound, just to hear it,regardless of where it went.
Other high points discussed here was Wagner's "Parsifal", then the "Ring" itself with Patrick Chereau in the Mid-Seventies. Boulez relates a story of Klemperer asked Boulez(referring to Parsifal)"How do you deal with all this religiousness? and Boulez's response was "He(I) ignore it, and deal with pure technique, the long sheaths of time,slow tempi,and the most mature work within Wagner's oeuvre.Here Cecile Gilly requests basic necessities, but these interviews are more squarely on target, more technical in content on conducting than ones I've read previously. "Should a conductor be a composer?", she asks, and where,who have been successful composer-conductors?. or "What were your artistic aims at that time? What sort of programmes did you wish to conduct?, and a little later, "Were these concerts well attended?
There are also a traversing over quite traditional materials, as Berlioz the great orchestrator,19th Century music, the evolution of the orcehstra and Wagner as composer and conductor himself. But Boulez has wonderful things to say as " Orchestral imagination is a particular gift."Again the simplicity is misleading,for there are those genius composers who really could not orchestrate as Brahms,Chopin, Mussorgsky,Schumann,Scriabin.However Berlioz, had other shortcomings, ones of viable structure, of form in music becoming completely dependant on a narrative,yet still relatively naive in his approach, he founded the modern sounding orchestra with "Symphonie fantastique". The "voicings" of chords for example are all conmmonplace root position triads, yet when the contrabasses pluck these"commonplace" chords they are more percussive and brilliant sounding within the "acoustical illusion" of the orchestra.

Boulez in his terse, yet expansive when needed answers, always places the materials, the "musical text" as he refers to it, within a context. One example was the largesse of amplitude of the growing Romantic orchestra, the sound of the overbearing augmentation of the orchestra, due to larger halls, where Beethoven's philosophy(in the last years of the 19th Century) needed Tubas in order to not make flimsy and miniturize the content of his explosive 'Symphonies', Even Mahler got in on this aesthetic of filling the stage with persona,to no great end actually. For the music,not its conception does not change only those who perform and listen to it,they have needs and requirements for realizations that changes.

There are also many questions on the founding of IRCAM and the Ensemble Intercontemporain, and the administrative problems encountered. Boulez usually had resolved one problem with the experience(s) from another place. Like the "teaching" aspect of IRCAM came from his early experiences with Georg Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra, where Szell rendered a highly professional ensemble from what was rather mediocre in performance abilities as an ensemble. And Boulez says here you need to get an ensemble to think the same,explain things to them, each musician is quite accomplished on their own, they know their instrument, but then that means very little when placed within the context of learning a new work for example, or the problems of balance and listening as in Berg's "Three Pieces for Orchestra".
Boulez's creative work is discussed as well and we learn is founded in certain aspects on tradition,(something he would never have admitted in the Fifties,again the Boulez aesthetic is/was formulated in process of acquistion) as Wagner and the projection of "acoustical illusion" this in relation to Boulez's orchestral realizations of "Notations" 12 youthful piano solos,use as "seeds" for really ;etudes; for orchestra.
My favorite moments here are those under "Illusions and kaleidoscopes",Gilly askes, "In explosante-fixe/. . . . you tried in particualr to develop instrumental transformations of sound", and Boulez's response was "Yes, it is a kind of puzzle with musical segments that alternates more or less rapidly and ina more or less predicatable manner." Then another question." You attempt to short-circuit perception". Quite interesting set of interviews here. Those prior seemed too general much of the time, although those with Rocco di Petri those where on composition more than conducting, and those with Jean Vermeil from the Seventies was of a general traversing over points in Boulez entire career,less on technical sets of problematics.Those of Celestine Deliege were from the Sixties, although quite more on compositions.

Bursting with quality-- don't miss this

I gotta say, this was worth the wait. And the weight!

This book is a *brick*! I'm not kidding, you are going to have to read it at the table. But it is so heavy due to the super thick paper it's printed on and its over-sized layout, which is everything I could have wished for. The pages are MUCH thicker and the inks are MUCH lusher than comic books or soft-cover collections.

The book is definitely taller and wider than the individual comics or soft-cover collections you might already have. This book is 9" x 12", and the original comics are just a little bit bigger than 6" x 10". Inside the book, each cover or section page is printed with a full 9x12 image. The story pages are are bordered with white, so the actual comic images are close to the same size as the originals (slightly wider at 7x10).

What are these white borders for? Besides looking crisp and nice, they often contain commentaries by the authors and artists. Great touch! These lines of text offer little insights into the process of creating the stories and the art as well as impressions about themes and turns of events in the storylines. Sample comment: "On this page, I decided to put Feron in his last change of clothes. He is, in fact, losing layers of clothing as the story goes on. He first loses his hood, then the loses his jacket entirely, making him more visible and more vulnerable as the story gets more dramatic." To give you an idea, the first section, "Redemption", has one of these tiny little commentaries on 39 pages out of the 87 pages of that story.

The hardcover is glossy and thick, the inside pages are semi-gloss and thick (feels like 140# paperweight). It's 100% full color throughout-- even on the pages with black and white sketches, they managed to throw in some colored grid lines or other bits of color. The printing is the super premium pearl style over matte. A pleasure to look at.

The comics take up the first 400 pages of the book. Pages 402-415 are the sketchbook of Omar Francia, including more cool commentary. The last page, 416, is a nice full color ad for "The Art of the Mass Effect Universe", like you'd see at the end of a regular comic book.

I do have one quibble: this books needs a table of contents. How did that get left out?! You have to thumb through the book to find what you are looking for. The pages have labels, so that helps, but still.

Absolutely incredible

This is a must have for any Mass Effect fan. I'd been searching for the novels individually and to find them in one tome was a plus. I was rather taken aback when I opened the box at the sheer size and weight of the book but the detail and quality blew me away. This was worth the wait!

Comic is great. Writers comments at bottom of pages contain spoilers though.

Firstly, my book came with some damage to the hard cover. Most likely it happened during shipping. But if there had been bubble wrap or some kind of packing material in the box it probably wouldn't have happened. The box it came in was clearly dropped at some point.
The comics are awesome. I love the art and story. I'm a big Mass Effect fan. But under some of the comic pages there are comments from the artists and writers. A little commentary. It wouldn't be that bad if they wouldn't have spoilers in their commentary. I'm only half way through and I've read the 3rd spoiler on what's going to happen a few pages later. It's very frustrating. There was one comment that said something like, "this scene will later end in tragedy." So a few pages before it happened I knew someone was going to die. That really sucked. I was just reading it and came across the 3rd spoiler and it prompted me to write this review. "But she would end up restrained..." I really didn't need to know that before it happened. Let me enjoy the comic, don't put spoilers in the commentary!
It's not full of spoilers though. Some of the commentary is interesting. Like when they explain why they put certain words in bold print.
In conclusion, I would have given 5 stars if it weren't for the spoilers. I would have forgiven the damage the book had.

The Challenge

I bought this book about ten years ago and I only read about a chapter or two of it. The difficulty I had with this book was not that I didn't understand what he was talking about, it was that I couldn't follow the suggestions Goldsmith was making.

Joel Goldsmith suggests that when you meditate, you do not ask God for anything...nothing! And that's a very hard thing for most of us to do. Even when we think we're not asking God for things, we usually are. And it's not that I'm against asking God for things because I am of the opinion that "God loves to be used" but not during meditation...especially not during meditation!

Meditation is for the sole/the soul purpose of letting God be God in you. It's about letting the peace, the love, the joy well up from within and take over. Meditation is about being true to your True Self and letting the veil that "separates" the seen from the unseen drop away and realize with real eyes that everything is One.

I don't think this book is neccessarily for Christians as one reviewer said it was. A lot of the terminology is undeniably Christian, but if you are open enough to read this book, you're probably open enough to know that just because they may be Christian words, Christianity does not own them. Truth does not belong to a particular religion. Truth is an ultimate that every person must discover for themselves and it can be done by reading this book and attempting to do what it suggests.

May we let God be God in us, as us in all that we think, do, and say. May our only prayer be a prayer of thanks and may we dwell only on God's Perfect Kindom when we meditate.

A wonderful guide to meditation primarily for those with the highest spiritual aims

This book is on a par with Goldsmith's other books, i.e. of an equally high quality. He is now my favourite spiritual author, though I also highly appreciate Neville. After reading only a few pages of any of Goldsmith's books, I can feel a tangible elevation of consciousness, impossible for me to describe. I always read at least a chapter from one of his books before retiring.

This particular book differs from the author's other books in that the subject-matter is more specific - he explains to us in detail his system of meditation.

Firstly, it must be made clear that though many of us may think of meditation merely as a practice to enable us to find calm and harmony in our lives together with obtaining possible improvement in both our mental and physical health, Goldsmith's viewpoint was another. To his mind meditation was an absolutely essential practice (he spent 9 or 10 hours out of 24 in meditation) leading finally to "illumination, communion, and union" with God: he devoted his life to obtaining this union and to communicating his experiences and teachings.

The first third of the book deals with the "practice". The author states that anyone with "sufficient perseverance, application and fidelity" can "cultivate a Christ awareness". I found this first section to be extremely useful.

The second section dealing with "the experience" seemed a bit diffuse to me. But this remark has probably more to do with my own limitations as regards consciousness than anything else.

I found the third section, "the fruits", extremely inspiring. He describes union with God as a state where there no longer is any "I" - "There is no you; there is no I; there is only God being."

There are many wonderful writers on spiritual matters, but I know of no others whose teachings are at so high a level as those of Joel Goldsmith.

I would like to point out that in my opinion you do not have to be a Christian to appreciate this book - I am not. You just have to be able to look beyond the author's terminology.

I strongly recommend this work to all spiritually interested readers, particularly those with the ultimate spiritual goal - union with God.

As with the book The Art of Spiritual Healing, this book is so profound, it needs to be read over and over in order to get a good grasp of the depth of its meaning. My mission is to read all of Goldsmith's books at least twice. He was truly an enlightened man.

About the Author

DR. RICHARD W. PAUL is Director of Research and Professional Development at the Center for Critical Thinking and the Chair of the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking. He has authored eight books and more than 200 articles on critical thinking. In over 35 years of teaching experience, he has won numerous awards and honors, including Distinguished Perry Lecturer for the year 2000.

DR. LINDA ELDER is an educational psychologist, President for the Foundation for Critical Thinking, and Executive Director of the Center for Critical Thinking. She is highly published and has done original research into the relation of thought and emotion. She is a regular keynoter at the International Conference on Critical Thinking and is a recognized leader in the field.

A lifetime learning approach, not a course in "critical thinking"

I enjoyed this book and got a lot out of it. For such a high level book it isn't easy reading because it requires you to think about your own thinking while you are reading it in order to get full value out of it. If you skip that exercise, in my opinion, you will not appreciate the value of this book. So if you want to grow from what the authors are offering, be prepared to take a long term vision of your own abilities and to do a lot of work. In spite of the somewhat misleading title of this book, it is not really about what most people would call "critical thinking," it is a much deeper and more useful view of thinking abilities in general.

This book presents a relatively accurate (in my opinion) and very usable model of how human reasoning works in practice and how we get better at it. In addition it offers many simple but practical drills for identifying how well you are thinking and what sorts of things would be good to work on. So I do recommend this book.

Having gotten that positive impression from my reading, I also noticed the many very negative reviews here and that made me pause and think a bit. It may be helpful to expand on what I think it good about this book and what the negative reviewers are seeing.

The authors in my opinion do two critical things very clearly (although very informally): (1) they usefully identify the intellectual virtues or ideals that underlie good thinking and how they relate to each other, and (2) they outline a loosely expertise-based practical model for going from being unaware of being a weak thinker to actively and consistently developing the skills of good thinking.

Where this book falls down a little in my own view is that it doesn't adequately address the relationship of the intellectual virtues with the *attitudes* that underlie them, indicate the stability of our attituds about thinking, or discuss in any depth the way improvement critically can rely on attitude change as well as cultivated abilities.

The authors do recognize the importance of attitude but I think they fail to persuade the reader that we have to adopt a particular set of attitudes in order to consistently embody the virtues. They mention, but do not give a realistic narrative sense of, the work involved in changing our attitudes toward thinking as well as developing the associated skills.

Perhaps worst of all, the authors make many points that I think are valid and supportable about the nature of thinking, but they provide no explicit support of their ideas in terms of available research. They rely too heavily on authority and intuitive plausibility in a field where what constitutes a solid principle is often very counter-intuitive.

I'm not saying the authors should have given us a book full of citations that no one is actually going to follow up just to impress people, I'm just saying that some of the most critical points could have been referenced in established empirical work here and there to give readers some grounding in psychological science that I think this topic needs and deserves in places.

As a result of these small gaps, I think many readers are probably going to see this book as simplistic and not very useful because they don't recognize that the authors are providing a very good high level map of a very big territory that takes a very long time and individual exploration to map in detail.

People complaining that this book doesn't offer details of logical fallacies or technical principles of reasoning are entirely right, but also somewhat missing the point of the book. Perhaps calling it "Critical Thinking" sets the expectations too specifically on the subset of skills that people associate with that topic. In my mind the authors are not really talking about "critical thinking" as most of us probably imagine it, that subset of thinking that involves examining arguments and questioning assumptions, they are talking about *reflective* thinking in general and what it takes to be good at it.

There are also people who complain because the authors disagree with them on specific topics or don't address arguments in the way they expect. I see a number of negative reviews complaining that the authors of this book did not seem to apply their own principles in the book. That's possible, but I feel as if they're looking at the proverbial finger pointing at the moon rather than seeing the beauty of the moon.

This book is pointing toward a big picture of how intellectual virtues and supporting attitudes optimally should guide thinking and the path to growth toward that ideal. Given that grand, perhaps even grandiose vision, it has some surprisingly detailed and specific ideas for improving our thinking in particular areas. So yes it perhaps does fail in some places in providing the richness of detail and explication that some of its arguments really deserve. And perhaps sometimes the authors themselves do fail to live up to the vision in their own presentation. Still, I think this book serves a useful and unique place among books on thinking because of the grandness of its vision and so I personally forgive it what I see as the minor issues that many others seem to have found so annoying that they couldn't even finish the book.

I think this book deserves and repays a deep reading and hard work but that it has to be distinguished from the typical course material on "critical thinking" both because its scope and vision are greater than that and because it lacks the immediate short term payback that people tend to expect from typical courses. This is a lifetime learning approach, not a course.

Make sure you actually need this book before buying

I bought this book for a class so it wasn't by choice.
Luckily i did actually have to use it for assigments out of the book so it was worth my money, but other than that this book is a real bore.

It has some good points to it but the authors are very verbose in pretty simple concepts.

Like I said, make sure you actually need this book before buying.

Much to offer

Used during my PhD classes. He explores the power of the human mind and how can we reach our potential. Critical thinking is thinking about your thinking while you are thinking. In the Kindle edition, commonly underlined parts of the book come already underlined.
