Amazingly, Shylock is in only five scenes in the Merchant of Venice. Yet, as pointed out by Gross, the theater critic for the London Sunday Telegraph , his impact and significance transcend his physical presence, so much so that his name and "pound of flesh" idea are almost universally known. In the first part of this character/cultural study, Gross examines the antecedents of Shylock and the play, and his development within the play. The second part considers "interpretations" both theatrical and literary in England and America until World War II; the third part considers Shylock more broadly as a touchstone (e.g., how his "type" is used by the Victorians--Trollope's Lopez, Dickens's Riah, Ruskin's use of him in Munera Pulveris ). There's not much new here--Shylock and Merchant of Venice have both consumed tons of interpretive ink--but the book is readable and puts a lot of sundry information in one place. For collections heavy in Shakespeariana and/or Judaica.

Shylock--stereotype, archetype, icon--is, according to London Sunday Telegram theater-critic Gross (The Rise and Fall of the Man of Letters), the only character in a Shakespeare play to have an autonomous life. By tracing Shylock's origins and forms in literature, theater, and political and social history, Gross emphasizes his chameleonlike nature and what it reveals about the cultures in which he appears. An object of fun, contempt, pity, and rage, Shylock first appeared as the ``Satanic Jew''--the evil figure to be overcome--in The Merchant of Venice, written between 1596-98. An archetypal usurer with origins in folklore, politics, and popular culture, he embodied, says Gross, the era's ambiguities toward Jews, money, misers, and, on another level, toward emerging Economic Man, embodied in Shylock as a tough-minded businessman caught up in the court system and unable to protect his family or what he perceives as his rights. In the 18th century, Shylock was played as a clown, or as wolfish and cunning, until Edmund Kean's consummate interpretation in his London debut in 1814, a performance admired and immortalized by Hazlitt for the sympathy it evoked. A Victorian interpretation by Henry Irving displayed a Shylock possessed, the victim of persecution. Since then, Gross contends, literary critics from A.C. Bradley to Mark Van Doren, novelists from Sir Walter Scott to James Joyce, social theorists including Ruskin and Marx, psychologists from Freud to Reich, and all the great actors- -Gielgud, O'Toole, Olivier--have contributed to the evolution of a subtle, conflicted, mysterious Shylock who has acquired the archetypal dimensions of a Don Quixote or Robinson Crusoe. Shylock in Context

John Gross' work is very readable, yet also very scholarly. We learn about the real situation of Jews in Venice, the real role of "usury" (despite official attitudes to it) in Elizabethan England. The ties to traditional dark Medieval myths about Jews are explained. Also we are told about famous performances of Shylock, including by Jewish actors. Anyone interested in the stage, Shakespeare, great characters, or Jews and the myths about them ... will want to own this book.

Introduction to Ignatian Spirituality

This book is primarily a lay-person's guide to Ignatian contemplative prayer. However, it can also be read simply as an uplifting book on spirituality and the nature of the relationship between human beings and God. Another reviewer said this book is a "touchstone" and I agree. This book is filled with the love of God and the exercises help point to Christ and to God's infinite grace.

This book is what America is searching for.

I am indeed surprised that I am the first person to review this book for America. I am a priest in Scotland and wish to recommend this book to everyone, of all faiths and none. Gerry Hughes dispenses with the 'God who punishes', the God who has been portrayed by mainstream religion for centuries, nay millennia, who wouldn't even make a half decent next door neighbour. This is Christianity with depth - and no place for superstition. If you have ever sat in a church listening to a preacher talking nonsense and wanted to challenge his sermon, read this book. Gerry seems to invite people to listen to the biggest pulpit anyone could find, - the pulpit which stands in each person's own heart and conscience. Break free from the shackles of religion by terror and meet the God of Surprises. The big surprise is : You're okay, don't listen to those who would load burdens of guilt on your shoulders, and......... it's okay to question the teachings of people who wear black frocks and white collars. I hope this book becomes a best seller across the pond.

From Dark Ignorance to Light and Knowledge

I recommend this book for every Christian, for every need and for everyone. This book allows you to see into your very soul and deal with its contents on your own with God as help. This book offends the mind but reveals the heart - making it safe to surrender yourself unashamed for help when you see the truth staring you in the face. My bonds were broken when I read this book. My heart was set free to love the God of Surprises, who truly subsequently after reading this book and doing as it says has done Nothing but SURPRISE ME. God is Good. He truly does not condemn us, but He bids us come to Him for that deliverance from hurts, from greed, from unexplained pain, from every destruction that threatens. I found how every pain was meant to be an invitation. Every party has some surprise. So does an invitation to grow in faith. With this book, you learn how to accept an invitation from God.

About the Author
Kathy and Craig are dedicated to each other, and to hiking, in that order. Their second date was a 32-km (20-mile) dayhike in Arizona. Since then they haven’t stopped for long. They’ve trekked through much of the world’s vertical topography, including the Himalayas, Patagonian Andes, Pyrenees, Swiss and French Alps, Scottish Highlands, Dolomites, Sierra Nevada, North Cascades, Colorado Rockies, New Zealand Alps, and canyons of the American Southwest. In 1989, they moved from the U.S. to Canada, so they could live near the Canadian Rockies—the range that inspired the first of their refreshingly unconventional guidebooks: Don’t Waste Your Time® in the Canadian Rockies. While living in Vancouver, British Columbia, they explored the Coast Mountains and the North Cascades, then wrote hiking guidebooks on each of those ranges. Later, while living in a cabin on Kootenay Lake (between B.C.’s Purcell and Selkirk mountains), they researched and wrote two more hiking guidebooks: one on the West Kootenay, the other on the premier trails of southern B.C. Kathy and Craig have since returned to the Canadian Rockies and now live in Canmore, Alberta. Their desire to hike, however, keeps them travelling constantly. For example, they migrate each spring and fall to the high-desert canyon country of southern Utah. Their guidebook on that sensual, other-worldly landscape promises to be especially stimulating.

About the Author
Lawrence S. Brown (Ph.D, Princeton University) is a Senior Lecturer and coordinator for the general chemistry for engineers course at Texas A&M University. He received his B.S. in 1981 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his M. A. in 1983 from Princeton University. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow from 1986-88 at the University of Chicago. His research activities include active learning and use of technology in education and integration of chemistry with other subjects in the engineering curriculum. His current efforts are in (i) continued development of the CHEM 107 curriculum, (ii) improving uses of technology in chemical education, and (iii) incorporation of active learning strategies into large classroom settings. These efforts are brought together with the Foundation Coalition, an NSF-supported effort to implement a new model for the education of engineering students. Larry also monitors the CHEM 107 course for Texas A&M's campus in Qatar in the Middle East and has traveled there numerous times.

Tom Holme (Ph.D, Rice University) is a chemistry professor at Iowa State University and Director of the ACS Examinations Institute. He is active in both computational chemistry and chemical education research and has been involved with the general chemistry for engineers course at both Iowa State and the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Some of his recent publications include: "Designing Chemistry Practice Exams for Enhanced Benefits: An Instrument for Comparing Performance and Mental Effort Measures," (Karen Knaus, Kristen Murphy and Thomas Holme), Journal of Chemical Education, 2009, in press; "Nanoscience Items for Standardized Exams in the Undergraduate Chemistry Curriculum" (Thomas Holme), in Nanoscale Science and Engineering Education: Issues, Trends and Future Directions, ed., A.E. some of the answer keys for the practice exercises are number incorrectly which adds much confusion. For chapter 2 at least, this study guide has done more harm then good. And it only covers the odd numbered problems in the text and is therefore nothing more than redundant. Save the money and stick with the text. I want a refund!

I always trained hard in the gym, but my stomach muscles are never displayed, and so I did not have a 6 packs. I downloaded this book for fun, and was pleasantly surprised. In this book you will find many useful exercises for the abdominal muscles, which are accompanied by beautiful photos. In the book you will find the food recipes and diet. Using the tips that I have found in this book, in a short time I began to notice that the abdominal muscles have begun to appear, and I finally saw my package 6. Recommend this book by Adam for all who wants get Abs.

This book by Evgeny Patyaev shows the reader the reason most people do not have fabulous, abs is that they do not have the information that you will find in this quick reading book. This book will show you the two steps to a six pack. Along with the diet and lifestyle needed to give you the look that you are looking for. Well written and packed with the knowledge of what it takes to make the changes to give you the body that you have dreamed about. One of my favorite lines from the book. “Diet is like a chisel that helps mold your abs once you’ve started building them.” I have rated the book a solid 5 star rating and would enjoy reading more books by Evgeny Patyaev. One of the things that I liked best about this book was the exercises that were shown in the book.

Very simple and comprehensive guide to the most common (and slightly less common) ultrasound guided MSK injections. Would have been a five star review if they could have online streaming content or associated DVD with step-by-step instructions for some of the more common injections, such hip, knee, shoulder, ankle and CMCP.
