Review
Golda Meir is one of the pioneers of the state of Israel and one of its prime ministers. Ann Atkins has written a very readable biography, Golda Meir--True Grit, of this remarkable woman who, from very early in her life, concluded that the Zionist dream of a nation where Jews could be free of the prejudice and oppression they faced in the world, could be made a reality. Golda Meir is an inspiration and I would surely recommend this biography to anyone who wants to learn about her and Israel.  National Books Critic Circle, Alan Caruba

Ann Atkins' biography of Golda Meir is the second of her books I have reviewed. The first was a biography of Eleanor Roosevelt. I gave it high marks. It pales by comparison to this book which is as accessible and as easy to read.
Ann did a great job in the previous book of relating the struggles Eleanor faced with current issues. In this book, Ann's touch is more subtle and therefore more powerful.
This book helps you understand how current world conflicts came to be. This book should be on every recommended reading list in every middle and high school in America. Bob Cherney, Author

Ann Atkins once again makes relevant to readers the journey of a historical figure.  Golda Meir's courage to stand for justice is as pertinent for today's audience to believe in a lofty vision as it was to the Jews daring to believe in the rebirth of Israel. Biographies get buried in the sands of academic details but Ann's concise writing gives immediacy to the story and inspiration to readers ages 15 and up.  Ann's biographies fulfill a much greater purpose than the digging up of historical facts.  Golda Meir ~ True Grit is a no sweat treasure. C. Riley Augé, Ph.D. University of Montana

"Reviewer's Choice" - Midwest Book Review"Golda Meir-True Grit" is an exceptionally well researched and written biography that does full justice to its subject. Enhanced with the inclusion of a three page Bibliography, twelve pages of Endnotes, and a very useful Index, "Golda Meir-True Grit" is highly recommended for the non-specialist general reader with an interest in the life and accomplishments of Golda Meir, and would prove to be a popular addition to community library 20th Century Biography collections.

From the Author
Author and National Speaker Ann Atkins connects to her audience the crux of the tough decisions and the turning points in the journeys of historical figures.  Ann bridges the historical life lessons of personal ethics and public power to her audience bringing a deeper dimension to the construct of being 'connected.'
Transforming the power in history to her audience, Ann explains, "The audacity of these people to live out their own destiny challenges us to do the same. After all, it's not about them. They are history. It's about us."

From the Inside Flap
Braiding together the scope of Golda's life, the background facts for the rebirth of Israel and the Jewish spirit to survive, in a storytelling style that is under 300 pages. The noble lives in history have already explored for us the uncharted territory of doubt, deception and decisions at the fork in the road.  The stories of past lives provide us with the guidance we need today.

A must for all 20th century world history classes
By kathrybn bosseler
As a retired . global studies teacher I found this book incredibly informative and fascinating. The author has shown the reader what an inspiring woman Golda Meir was and the journey her life took to finally achieve the dream that the Jewish people had for centuries -to form their own homeland in ancient Palestine. In a world where we are desperately looking for role models for young people this book is a beautiful example of the difference one person can make. I highly recommend this book for for anyone interested in 20th century history and as a required reading for the classroom-Kathy Bosseler

Reading at it's Best
By Rev. Dr.Opal Mae Dailey
Golda Meir ~True Grit is a brilliantly written story of an enormously unconventional woman. I would say," most,if not all, people in America would have a better understanding of current world affairs if they read this book".
It is graphic in places but calls a spade a spade. Reading this book could be a life changing experience for many.
I highly recommend this book for great reading.

A basic book
By M. Ercolino
This book is a good beginners volume, focusing on G code programming and operations. However, it is not really on a college level as to the information delivery and the presentation. Would be terrific for High School or a some short course. But for a college course, it seems to fall a little short.

This book is aimed squarely at Excel users who want to harness the power of the VBA language in their Excel applications. At all times, the VBA language is presented in the context of Excel, not just as a general application programming language.

The Primer has been written for those who are new to VBA programming and the Excel object model. It introduces the VBA language and the features of the language that are common to all VBA applications. It explains the relationship between collections, objects, properties, methods, and events and shows how to relate these concepts to Excel through its object model. It also shows how to use the Visual Basic Editor and its multitude of tools, including how to obtain help.

The middle section of the book takes the key objects in Excel and shows, through many practical examples, how to go about working with those objects. The techniques presented have been developed through the exchange of ideas of many talented Excel VBA programmers over many years and show the best way to gain access to workbooks, worksheets, charts, ranges, and so on. The emphasis is on efficiency—that is, how to write code that is readable and easy to maintain and that runs at maximum speed. In addition, the chapters devoted to accessing external databases detail techniques for accessing data in a range of formats.

The final four chapters of the book address the following advanced issues: linking Excel to the Internet, writing code for international compatibility, programming the Visual Basic Editor, and how to use the functions in the Win32 API (Windows 32-bit Application Programming Interface).

It's called a Programmer's Reference, but it's not
By Another Weekend Warrior
Programming books usually take one of three approaches. It either assumes you know absolutely nothing and gives you a very exhaustive history of not only the subject at hand, but programming in general. Or, the book is written "cookbook" style. Finally, some programming books are written as reference books.

This book claims to be a reference book, but it's not. As someone who's programmed for over a decade in a ton of languages and just had to learn enough to get this project done, I wanted a reference book so that I could say, "how do you write an 'if' statement?" "What's the syntax for logical operators in this language?" Stuff like that. You will find *none* of that in this book's index or table of contents.

For example, I had to write a simply if block. if ((condition A) and (condition B) Then 'Do something

I didn't know if the "and" was supposed to be && or AND or something else. So I looked up "logical operators" in the index. Nothing. So I then looked up just "operators". Nothing! Google to the rescue!

I needed to know how to increment a variable. In many languages (Perl, C/C++, PHP), if you have a variable named x, incrementing it would be as simple as x++. I may be wrong, but it doesn't appear that can be done in VBA and you'd have to do x = x + 1. It would be nice if there was a section quickly explaining this stuff.

There are a TON of examples such as this. For example, the books talks about functions. None of the examples, however, show you how to return a value from a function. The syntax is different than in most other languages, so it should at least be given a small mention. Again, google to the rescue!

In some cases, although you can't find it in the table of contents or the index, it *is* in the book. Of course, this then forces you to just aimlessly search from page to page trying to find what you need. For this project I'm doing, because I know nothing of this new language every page teaches me something I didn't know. So I found myself putting post it notes on pages. "Well, I'll need this bit of information to finish this project so let me just bookmark it. Right now, however, I'm looking for X and I still can't find that."

Listen, there is information in there and if you know nothing of VBA, you'll get something from this book (the only reason why I didn't give it 1 star). However, I bought it specifically because it said it was a reference. When I want to know the answer to something, I want a concise, quick way to look up how to do it so that I can move on. Unix Powertools is the PERFECT example of such a book and is probably the best cross-referenced book I ever read. In the end, I should have just saved my money and used google. I'll be returning this book.

Perfect for the impatient programmer who needs to pick up Excel VBA
By Nada Amin
This is the best book I've found to quickly learn Excel VBA. I am an experienced programmer but I had no knowledge of VBA before reading this book. The book gives instant gratification with useful samples that are easily adapted. It teaches by example and still manages to get general and useful techniques across. In short, for my purpose (quickly picking up Excel VBA without getting terribly bored), this book is perfect.

Key pieces missing
By William R. Wiltschko
I book this WROX book sight unseen, but after having read these reviews and owning many other WROX books. The immediate trigger for buying was having some of my Excel 2003 macros stop working in Excel 2007 due to the change in color scheme. This book is silent on the new color scheme. On the other hand, "Excel 2007 Power Programming with VBA (Mr. Spreadsheet's Bookshelf)" deals with this issue in depth, so I bought this reference also, and would recommend it over the WROX book. Mr Spreadsheet's book has saved my bacon.

The WROX book doesn't handle the translation of Excel 2003 "lists" to Excel 2007 "tables" completely. I would have liked more info on Structured References, which have the potential to make "tables" actually useful.

The Good Girls Revolt: How the Women of Newsweek Sued their Bosses and Changed the Workplace, by Lynn Povich

The inspiration for the new Amazon Original Pilot

It was the 1960s––a time of economic boom and social strife. Young women poured into the workplace, but the “Help Wanted” ads were segregated by gender and the “Mad Men” office culture was rife with sexual stereotyping and discrimination.

Lynn Povich was one of the lucky ones, landing a job at Newsweek, renowned for its cutting-edge coverage of civil rights and the “Swinging Sixties.” Nora Ephron, Jane Bryant Quinn, Ellen Goodman, and Susan Brownmiller all started there as well. It was a top-notch job––for a girl––at an exciting place.

But it was a dead end. Women researchers sometimes became reporters, rarely writers, and never editors. Any aspiring female journalist was told, “If you want to be a writer, go somewhere else.”

On March 16, 1970, the day Newsweek published a cover story on the fledgling feminist movement entitled “Women in Revolt,” forty-six Newsweek women charged the magazine with discrimination in hiring and promotion.  It was the first female class action lawsuit––the first by women journalists––and it inspired other women in the media to quickly follow suit.

Lynn Povich was one of the ringleaders. In The Good Girls Revolt, she evocatively tells the story of this dramatic turning point through the lives of several participants. With warmth, humor, and perspective, she shows how personal experiences and cultural shifts led a group of well-mannered, largely apolitical women, raised in the 1940s and 1950s, to challenge their bosses––and what happened after they did. For many, filing the suit was a radicalizing act that empowered them to “find themselves” and fight back. Others lost their way amid opportunities, pressures, discouragements, and hostilities they weren’t prepared to navigate.

The Good Girls Revolt also explores why changes in the law didn’t solve everything. Through the lives of young female journalists at Newsweek today, Lynn Povich shows what has––and hasn’t––changed in the workplace.

Review

Gloria Steinem
"The Good Girls Revolt is as compelling as any novel, and also an accurate, intimate history of new women journalists invading the male journalistic world of the 1970s. Lynn Povich turns this epic revolt into a lesson on why and how we've just begun."

Jeannette Walls“A meticulously reported and highly readable account of a pivotal time in the women’s movement.” Kirkus“Povich’s in-depth research, narrative skills and eyewitness observations provide an entertaining and edifying look at a pivotal event in women’s history.”

New York Times
“The personal and the political are deftly interwoven in the fast-moving narrative…. The Good Girls Revolt has many timely lessons for working women who are concerned about discrimination today….But this sparkling, informative book may help move these goals a tiny bit closer.”

Boston Globe“Solidly researched and should interest readers who care about feminist history and how gender issues play out in the culture.”
Macleans“Povich’s memoir of the tortuous, landmark battle that paved the way for a generation of female writers and editors is illuminating in its details [and] casts valuable perspective on a trail-blazing case that shouldn’t be forgotten.”
American Journalism Review“[Povich] strikes a fair tone, neither naïve nor sanctimonious.... Among her achievements is a complex portrait of Newsweek Editor Osborn Elliott and his path from defensive adversary to understanding ally.”

Liesl Schillinger, New York Times
“Women still have a long way to go, the journalist Lynn Povich rousingly reminds readers in The Good Girls Revolt, her fascinating (and long overdue) history of the class-action lawsuit undertaken by four dozen female researchers and underlings at Newsweek magazine four decades ago…. If ever a book could remind women to keep their white gloves off and to keep fighting the good fight, this is the one.”

Washingtonian“Crisp, revealing…. [A] taut, firsthand account of how a group of razor-sharp, courageous women successfully fought back against institutional sexism at one of the country’s most esteemed publications.”

Philadelphia Inquirer
“With vivid recollections of the author and major and minor participants, Povich, a party to the suit, succeeds in making recent history enraging, poignant, and even sexy.”

"Equality is never given, it is taken." -- Jane Bryant Quinn
By takingadayoff
When the Newsweek editors decided to write a cover story about feminism in March 1970, it was a hot topic, just the sort of current events coverage that the news magazine was known for. The day the issue hit the stands, a group of women who worked at Newsweek filed a civil rights suit against the magazine. Newsweek was being sued for gender discrimination.

Lynn Povich, one of the few women writers at Newsweek at the time, was one of forty-six women filing the suit, and she has gathered the documents and interviewed many of the people involved, on both sides, to ensure that the story isn't forgotten. The resulting book left me feeling both exhilarated at the progress they made in 1970 and beyond, and dismayed at the lost ground that will have to be fought over yet again.

The case was almost laughably open and shut, from a legal standpoint. Women with Ivy League degrees were hired at Newsweek as secretaries or researchers, and rarely rose above that. Men with similar degrees were hired as writers and went on to become correspondents and editors. Women who tried to become writers were discouraged or simply passed over. The few who did become writers were paid lower wages than men at the same level.

But the system was so entrenched that most of the women were reluctant to stir the pot. They were good girls.

While some of the management at Newsweek were surprised that the women won the suit, they shouldn't have been. On the other hand, it probably shouldn't have been a big surprise to the women that two years after having won the case, there were even fewer women writers and editors at Newsweek than before. They had to sue again.

Povich quotes Jane Bryant Quinn (who worked at Newsweek, but not at the time of the lawsuits) as saying "Equality is never given, it is taken."

The book opens and closes with the plight of several women working for Newsweek today who are astonished to find themselves facing obstacles such as the ones that were supposed to have been overcome forty years ago. They were unaware of the events of forty years ago. The Good Girls Revolt may have to be waged yet again.

A must-read for women in the workplace
By Diane
My sons like to tease me and call me a feminist (yeah, they don't get it), a badge I proudly wear, so I was surprised that I knew nothing about the revolt by the women working at Newsweek magazine, who in 1970 brought a complaint to the EEOC against the magazine charging discrimination against them in hiring and promotion practices.

Lynn Povich, a writer who worked at Newsweek and was part of the suit, brings the story to life in The Good Girls Revolt: How the Women at Newsweek Sued Their Bosses and Changed the Workplace. The women were employed at the magazine as researchers, but were never promoted to writer or editor, even though they had similar education and experience as the men hired as researchers and quickly promoted to writer and editor.

Nora Ephron, who worked at the magazine, described the "caste system"
"For every man there was an inferior woman, for every writer there was a checker", said Nora Ephron. "They were the artists and we were the drones. But what is interesting is how institutionally sexist it was without necessarily being personally sexist. To me, it wasn't oppressive. They were going to try to sleep with you- and if you wanted to, you could. But no one was going to fire you for not sleeping with them."
Mad Men's Madison Avenue offices weren't the only places where sex and booze ruled the workplace.

Povich is an excellent writer, and parts of this book, especially where the women were secretly meeting and trying to recruit other women to join the suit, read like a tense spy novel. Will they get caught?

They hired a young and pregnant Eleanor Holmes Norton to represent them. "The editors, who had supported the struggle for civil rights, were completely baffled by this pregnant black woman who questioned their commitment to equality."

The male editors, some of whom seemed like great guys, just didn't get it. What was worse in many of the women's eyes, was that Katherine Graham, who owned The Washington Post and Newsweek, didn't get it either. There is a powerful scene where Graham meets with the women and appears baffled by their action.

Along with the historical context of this story, I enjoyed reading about the inner workings of the magazine. We had a subscription for many years, and I always turned to read Anna Quindlen's back page column first. I had no idea that the struggle for equality there was so recent.

I recognized so many names in this book- Qunidlen, Ephron, Eleanor Clift, Jane Bryant Quinn and Maureen Orth among them. But it is the names that I didn't know, they are the important names, the ones who laid it all on the line so that the above mentioned women would be well known. Women like Povich, Pat Lynden and Lucy Howard paved the way for the other women with this lawsuit.

This book is essential reading for all young women starting out in the workplace. They must know who fought the battles for them so that they have the opportunities now available to them. The women of Newsweek are heroes, and I think that this book would be perfect for a high school or college journalism curriculum. I was also lucky enough to meet Ms. Povich at this year's Book Expo America, a true honor.

So much progress, so much still to achieve.
By Cynthia
I had the oddest feeling while reading this book that time both stands still even as it flees by. Povich starts the book with a vignette of three young professional women and their plight of career stagnation due to discrimination. Then she describes the stories of some of the principal complainants in the 1970 class action suit brought against `Newsweek' for sex discrimination. Povich outlines not just their professional stories but also some of their relevant personal history including their outlooks on life, their career goals, and their unique personalities. This makes the story personal and the reader can't help but root for their triumph. It seems so ludicrous from this distance to realize a lot of these women had Ivy league educations yet were stuck in the mail or research rooms of `Newsweek'. What a waste of an education, drive, and talent. They did win the suit but sadly, they had to continue to fight for what they'd supposedly won through the courts. An entrenched social system doesn't change overnight. Also, not everyone longs to be at the top, many are content with fulfilling jobs that allow time for a family life. The downside to the situation is the women who'd been exiled to fact checking for the male writers sometimes didn't aspire to be writers but felt compelled to try out for that slot after the suit and if they succeeded in becoming a writer they felt obligated to write `hard' news rather than arts and culture articles regardless of their interests. Worst of all few of the women who lodged the suit benefited personally from it. It was the women who came after them who were able to take advantage of the opportunities these women made possible. Povich walks us through the decades post-suit and what that meant for women.

One of the worst enemies for women then and now is the desire to be `nice', to be a team player, and to be thought well of. Women in positions of power are much more likely to be disliked than those in the typing pool. Worst of all finding a mentor is a challenge for women. Men can more easily find an older, more successful man to teach him the ropes, someone who will champion him and his career goals. Standing out or achieving recognition as a woman is seen as being pushy and rude. Not so for men especially if they have someone powerful to back them. It was then that I realized how relatively recent some of these changes were. And sadly the experiences of Jessica, Jesse, and Sara, the three women who sued for more job opportunities and less discrimination in 2010, still felt the sting of a culture that under estimates women and the family in general even today. This is a fascinating history of the workplace and I love how Povich informs on how both sexes benefited and/or were deprived of finding a work situation that best fit for them. So much progress, so much still to achieve.
