The text is in the Revised Standard Version (RSV), and outlines each chapter in a paragraph-by-paragraph interpretation. Exposition of the text is developed within this framework. Intentionally avoiding theological extremes, the commentary keeps Christ-centered faith and the reality of personal redemption as well as the demand for an authentic expression of faith in terms of a Christ-controlled life.

Full of information

This series of books, to me, is still the 'gold standard" for Bible commentaries. One can skim or go as deeply into facts and theories about the Scriptures as one chooses. The only thing that could be better is to have the series as originally written rather than the edited and re-written one such as this.

Was so happy to receive The Broadman Bible Commenentary, Volume 1. Been looking for it a long time and I finally found it. I knew there were two different types of book listed of Volume 1 and Volume 1-Revised. I had several questions about it and he took the time to answer all my questions. Thank you so much.

Just finished reading this book & all I can say is wow! This author went through hell and back,but she never gave up. She was abused mentally, physically and emotionally. I like how she showed the good the bad and the ugly in her situation. I think that's what made her story believable and relatable, the fact that she didn't "sugarcoat " or try to make herself look like an "innocent Angel" She kept it 100! I think this book will help someone who is in an abusive relationship to "wake up " the fact that the author was able to look back and admit & identify her mistakes shows that she has learned from her experience. No matter how bad your situation is, if you learn from it then it was helpful in making you a better person.

I am not a big reader and it normally takes me a long time to read a book but this book was so interesting that I couldn't put it down from the first page to the last page it kept me intrigued and wanted to know more about the person who went through this tragic period in their life. I feel that this is a must-read for young girls today. It needs to be on every highschool bookshelf in school libraries throughout Kansas City. I feel that this writer is an excellent writer and she told her story very well it was an easy book to read I understood everything that was written and everything that she was going through I understood the timeline the content of the story,great job. I hope other people read this book and I hope that they get the message that the writer was trying to put out there and I also hope that it becomes a play and hit the Big Time movie theaters cuz I would be one movie that I would love to go see

This was a great book. Very talented writer. I found this book to be very intiguing. It hits so close to home for some. And so many are able to relate. I absolutely loved the strength and endurance of the writer. She is certainly a survivor. And I commend her for her ability to continue to fight, not just physically. But, Emotionally , mentally and spiritually. You my dear, are an inspiration to many. Amazing book!

About the Author

Nathan Myhrvold, founder of The Cooking Lab, coauthor of Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking and Modernist Cuisine at Home, and author of The Photography of Modernist Cuisine, has had a passion for science, cooking, and photography since he was a boy. By the age of 13, Nathan had already cooked the family Thanksgiving feast and transformed the household bathroom into a darkroom.

Myhrvold holds a doctorate in theoretical and mathematical physics as well as a master's degree in economics from Princeton University. He holds additional master's degrees in geophysics and space physics and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles. At Cambridge University, Myhrvold did postdoctoral work with Stephen Hawking in cosmology, quantum field theory in curved space-time, and quantum theories of gravitation, all before starting a software company that would be acquired by Microsoft.

As his career developed, he still found time to explore the culinary world and photography. While working directly for Bill Gates as the chief technology officer at Microsoft, Nathan was part of the team that won the Memphis World Championship Barbecue contest; he worked as a stagier at Chef Thierry Rautureau's restaurant Rover's, in Seattle; he then took a leave of absence to earn his culinary diploma from École de Cuisine La Varenne, in France.

Nathan retired from Microsoft in 1999 to found Intellectual Ventures and pursue several lifelong interests in photography, cooking, and food science. During this time, some of his photographs were published in America 24/7 (DK Publishing, Inc., 2003) and Washington 24/7 (DK Publishing, Inc., 2004). Unable to find practical information about sous vide cooking, he decided to write the book he felt was missing; one that provided a scientific explanation of the cooking process, the history of cooking, and the techniques, equipment, and recipes involved in Modernist cooking. Inspired by this void in cooking literature, he decided to share the science of cooking and wonders of Modernist cuisine with others, hoping to pass on his own curiosity and passion for the movement.

In the process of creating his first book, Nathan founded The Cooking Lab, hired an interdisciplinary team that included scientists, research chefs, and writers, and published the much-acclaimed six-volume, 2,438-page Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking, in 2011. That set was followed by Modernist Cuisine at Home, in 2012, which applies the insights of the original book in a format designed for home cooks. In 2013, he wrote The Photography of Modernist Cuisine, and The Cooking Lab partnered with Inkling to publish the Modernist Cuisine at Home app.

Maxime Bilet received a BA in creative writing, literature, and visual arts from Skidmore College. Bilet then graduated with highest honors from the Institute of Culinary Education in New York. He completed a stage at Jack's Luxury Oyster Bar and was quickly hired to the head chef position there by Jack Lamb. Moving to London, he accepted a stage with Heston Blumenthal's development team at The Fat Duck. Just prior to joining the culinary team as head chef for recipe research and development at The Cooking Lab, Bilet trained as sous chef to open the London branch of Auberge de L'Ile. In 2011, Bilet was named to Forbes Magazine's 30 Under 30 list in the category of Food and Wine.

The Holy Grail of the Foodie-at-Home-Chef

For those of you that don't want to read the silly-long review I wrote, scroll down to "BOTTOM LINE" for the important stuff.

I'll start with a disclaimer: Do not buy this book until you are familiar with the original "Modernist Cuisine." By that I do not mean you need to own that set first (quite the opposite, this is the stepping stone to the full set), but you should understand that it encompasses a style of cooking that can be crudely summarized as "cooking for scientists" or "how to make dinner in a laboratory." Once you know what you're getting into, decide if it's worth around $140 of your hard-earned cash.

Now, on to the good stuff. For those of you who salivated for a year, wishing you could justify buying "Modernist Cuisine" but knowing you wouldn't be able to use it to it's full potential (like me), your prayers have been answered! "Modernist Cuisine" made headlines (in the Food and Travel section) for:
1. Deconstructing the science of cooking rather than just listing recipes
2. Focusing on modern methods of preparing foods using tools such as combi ovens, sous vide setups, emulsifiers, etc
3. Including some rather stunning photography of the equipment and ingredients within

I am happy to say that all three are present in the "at Home" version. First, "Modernist Cuisine at Home" (MCAH hereafter) introduces a consolidated set of kitchen tools and gadgets that the home chef can reasonably afford. Don't have the funds for the laboratory-grade centrifuge featured in "Modernist Cuisine?" No problem. Not only does MCAH omit the prohibitively expensive tools from its recipes, but many of them are the same recipes found in the original, redone for the home cook. MCAH even goes as far as offering several options at varying price ranges for the equipment used within.

The same goes for the ingredients. MCAH mostly does away with the laundry list of exotic spices and chemicals featured in many "modernist" cookbooks and instead relies on ingredients you can find either at the local grocery store, or in reasonable quantities online. For the ingredients you are probably less familiar with (malic acid? agar agar?) there is a two-page spread detailing what each does, where it comes from, and what it costs. In many cases, the recipes will list alternatives if you choose not to add their recommendations to your shopping list.

Much like Modernist Cuisine, MCAH explains some of the science behind the various cooking techniques, but at a beginner's level. Each recipe includes a blurb about what's going on inside the pot (so to speak), and almost all of them include multiple variations at the end, allowing for a wide variety of options. This is especially useful for people new to the idea of sous vide cooking, as MCAH does a great job explaining exactly how it works, and how to make it work for you.

How has it taken me this long to get to the photography? Stunning, just as in "Modernist Cuisine". I don't know how they did it, but every picture is suitable for framing. Equipment has been dissected to yield amazing looking cross-sections used in explaining how the various tools function. And get this: included in the back are four prints from MCAH you can frame. I had no idea until they fell out while I was reading, but they are every bit as beautiful as the photos inside, and I dare say will look better on the walls of a kitchen than the usual crap paintings of grapes or farms or cows that people seem obligated to put up these days.

If it seem like I'm gushing, it's because I am. Any home cook who has jumped into sous vide cooking has probably experienced the frustration I have with cookbooks dedicated to the style. You have Douglas Baldwin's "Sous Vide for the Home Chef," which, while great for it's temperature charts (and the fact it came out before anything else was available) is too simple for anyone looking to expand their horizons into restaurant-quality preparations (French Laundry, anyone?). And on the other end of the spectrum is Thomas Keller's "Under Pressure," which, while exquisite in creativity and detail, is geared completely towards the restaurant chef (which he warns in the forward), both in scale and complexity. Even the original "Modernist Cuisine", while featuring more accessible recipes than "Under Pressure", still excluded the home cook from about half of it's contents due to equipment or ingredient limitations. MCAH is the first book that features sous vide in a way that the home cook can learn and excel at, while also creating dishes that will blow the guests away. Seriously, the stuff you can make from this book looks like it belongs on the set of Iron Chef.

BOTTOM LINE:

This is a "modern" (or Modernist) cookbook, so the recipes inside are going to be closer to what you'd find in a restaurant that uses an obscure adjective for it's title rather than what you'd see in your grandmother's kitchen. If the idea of cooking a beautiful cut of salmon in a Ziploc bag seems blasphemous, or using a digital scale instead of an elephant-shaped measuring cup is akin to high treason, you may not be ready to make the jump. But if you want to learn how modern cooking styles can produce amazing taste and presentation in your kitchen (while removing much of the uncertainty and variation that traditional high-heat methods entail), this is the book for you.

PROS:

- Currently the best book available for home sous vide setups
- Delicious recipes using accessible ingredients for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. Meat, Poultry, Fish and Veggies. Even has a few vegan options inside.
- Teaches the "why" of cooking, not just the "how"
- Stunning photography, and great step-by-step images for most of the recipes
- Comes with a separate water-resistant "kitchen manual" with every recipe inside so you can keep the gorgeous main-book away from the messiness of the kitchen.
- Comes with 4 prints you can frame in your home. Or not.
- Even though the recipes are designed using ingredient weights, approximate volume measurements are included
- Well constructed. You could easily beat an intruder to death with this book if you caught him stealing your sous vide setup
- Even has the bookmark ribbon you see in bibles, which fits, since this has become my new kitchen bible.

CONS:

- Though it says "at Home" in the title, your average kitchen will most likely lack some of the basic tools used in many of the recipes. At a minimum, you will need a digital scale, Sous Vide setup, a pressure cooker, and a whipped cream siphon. MCAH will help you in your quest to acquire those tools, but you should commit to expanding your kitchen arsenal if you plan to use this book to it's full potential.
- There are no calorie counts on these recipes, and in some cases if there were, it would take scientific notation to fit on the page. This is not a diet book, this is a book dedicated purely to creating the most delicious food possible at home. When you get to the page about deep-frying a hamburger, you'll understand what I mean.
- $140 (or whatever they charge now) isn't chump change, and for most people the new equipment will add to the cost.
- The sandwich on the cover does not actually levitate when you make it at home.
- Does not mow the lawn while you aren't using it.

The Joy of Cooking has found its successor!

First: A disclaimer. I have no connection with the authors of this book or the publishers. As a matter of full disclosure, I have been a cook for over thirty years, and I majored in Biology, so scientific terms don't scare me. My motto is: if someone else can do it, so can I.

Now for the review: The problem with most cookbooks is they do not provide the cook with a reasonable starting point from which to make excellent cuisine. I remember the days when I used to struggle to try to make recipes from Larousse Gastronomique and Joy of Cooking that were spectacular, but that end always seemed to elude me. I never felt as though I prepared a meal- ANY meal which rivaled or surpassed that of my favorite restaurants. Those cooks in the high end restaurants knew things that I didn't know, and used equipment I had never seen, let alone used. Well, that is no longer the case. I picked up the original tome (Modernist Cuisine) and extracted from it the recipes I could do in my kitchen at home, and at once realized that there was a whole world of phenomenal food out there, waiting to be tasted.

I cooked chicken breast sous vide (using a Rube Goldberg contraption I have since replaced with the SousVide Supreme) and the breasts were done perfectly, with all the delicate tastes intact. Wild duck breasts that had been lying in the back of my freezer because I knew they would taste like cardboard? They were the best poultry I had ever tasted. With those two successes under my belt, it was on to fish! I live in Florida, and so am fussy about my fish. My first foray was into cobia, and that dish, on that day, was the best fish I have ever tried, let alone made. And so on. Best green beans. Best carrots. Best risotto. Best salmon. You get the idea...

After getting sous vide under my belt, then I started playing with other techniques. Spherification is a blast, and I modified a technique from Thomas Keller's Under Pressure to make watermelon and mango 'egg yolk' "Steak Tartare", which was a huge hit with my guests. I just had the best carrot soup of my life, with the recipe taken from MCAH, which uses caramelization techniques well known to pros, but heretofore unknown to me (it involves a pressure cooker). Making classic sauces takes an hour or so, instead of many, many hours.

This is not a book for everyone, because not everyone really, really likes food. Or likes being able to create things in their own kitchen that far surpass their local restaurants. If food is just fuel, forget about MCAH. If, on the other hand, you have a part of your mind that remembers special meals, remembers certain dishes of their past with pleasure, and likes to savor their food, rather than gulping it down so you can watch the 7:00 Seinfeld reruns, this is the book for you. It is the first book that goes beyond- far beyond- what Erma Rombauer started all those years ago with The Joy of Cooking. The new millenium put self publishing in our hands (faceBook) and video distributing (YouTube) and reporting (Twitter), and now, in this age of paradigm shifts, we have world-class cuisine in our own homes. It's crazy, but it's cool.

THE book for the home cook seeking to get the most out of equipment and ingredients.

Modernist Cusine at home is a fantastic book demonstrating how to use the science in a home environment. It is a practical guide to "how to get it done"; whereas the original Modernist Cuisine goes in details on why and takes no short cuts and makes no compromises. In short, it is the volume which pulls the first set together for those without an extensive professional kitchen and unlimited access to ingredients and equipment.

The focus of the book is on techniques and use of equipment which are new or recently had a renaissance. Favorite equipment includes pressure cooker, water bath / CVAP oven and vacuum sealer. As many do not have a water bath and vacuum sealer, makeshift alternative solutions are given. Common to the equipment is that their best use can often be explained by science, thus taking the guesswork out of the equation.

The sections focus on common dishes, such as pizza, burgers, steaks, roast chicken, salmon, vegetables and pies. Many of the recipes offer alternative variations, encouraging the cook to use the fundamental technique while creating their own dishes. By using the on common dishes, it becomes more clear how the techniques can then be applied to many other tried, tested and true recipes.

The book is not meant as an entry level cook book for someone who needs to learn some tricks to keep themselves fed. It is geared towards those who want to learn how to make the most out of available tools and characteristics of various foods, and raise the flavor to a new level. Although in no way necessary, it is my belief this book will inspire more to buy the first set, so as to gain a deeper understanding.

The book keeps the extremely high standard for food photography, a pure delight to look at, also making it a great book for the coffee table!

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

 

While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field - including those of former students, now in health careers - that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known.

 

In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

 

Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings InterActive Physiology® CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS).

Susan J. Mitchell earned her Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan. She studied the cellular basis of behavior before joining the faculty at Onondaga Community College where she is currently a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. Her research in neurophysiology and training in physiology positioned her to write the original Nervous, Endocrine, and Digestive System modules in the InterActive Physiology® 9-System Suite tutorial program. She has been honored with a NISOD Excellence Award for teaching, and been awarded several grants to develop technological resources for biology at OCC. Dr. Mitchell is a member of the American Physiological Society, National Association of Biology Teachers, National Science Teachers Association, and the Human Anatomy and Physiological Society, where she is currently active on the Curriculum and Instruction Committee.

Not a very good learning resource

I am currently in an Anatomy and Physiology class that uses this lab manual. I find it overly confusing. It isn't much of a lab manual, it is mostly rehashing the textbook with a couple of procedures thrown in. The PAL disk that comes with it is next to useless. I have only used it once and didn't find that it helped me with the exercises in the manual at all. The manual is arranged in a non-intuitive way, which makes it very hard to follow. The vocabulary and exercises are inconsistent, ranging from high-school level to graduate-level. Overall, this manual ranges from irritating to infuriating. If you are an instructor, find a different book and manual to inflict on your class, PLEASE.

Lab Manual

This lab manual was an excellent resource while taking A&P. The lab manual provides practical applications of the fundamental concepts from the textbook which helped to solidify the learning process. The lab manual provides instruction for hands on learning for lab experiments such as dissection of a cat or mouse, which helped me memorize my anatomy. This is a great resource for learning that provides another perspective from simply reading a textbook.

I got the book in 3 business days in brand new condition, thank you. The only thing that I have noticed after getting my purchase and comparing it to my other class mate's books that the human skeleton atlas was missing. But that's OK, now. Otherwise as always, Amazon delivers!

Perfect explanation of functional style of programming

The functional programming is a hot topic these days as it can potentially be the effective response to necessity of adopting software to multicore hardware architecture. In effect, the elements of functional programming have been successively introduced into all mainstream languages, most of which gained these features quite long time ago. Java had lacked these facilities until the version 8 was released. Fortunately, that version catches it up and brings this language back to the family of modern languages.
This book explains very clearly and profoundly all functional elements introduced into Java. What is the most important, the author always tries to confront the functional approach with the traditional, imperative style of programming. As a result, the reader gains the clear comparison between these two different styles of programming.
The author of this book is the additional factor assuring reader satisfaction. Venkat Subramaniam is the recognized and experienced expert in the domain of programming languages without whom hardly any reputable conference about Java can be held. If his perfect teaching skills and sense of humour are also taken into account, further encouraging to reading this book seems unnecessary.
Finally, I must admit that the community of software developers have just been enriched by the next valuable book. If you want to catch on the main sense of functional approach and get benefits from its declarative style and better scalability, you must definitely read this book.

Excellent guide for experienced Java developers

This is an excellent book for experienced Java developers who want to learn the new functional programming (FP) aspects of Java 8. Highly recommended.

Throughout the book, Venkat shows how to implement simple examples that are easy to wrap your head around using the old imperative style of Java, and then rewrites the examples using FP. That approach is very effective and accomplishes two things:

1. Having both imperative and FP implementations of the same examples make it much easier to understand the FP implementations because experienced Java developers can relate FP to the way they're used to writing code. Without the imperative versions, I don't think the FP versions would be nearly as clear to experienced Java developers without a FP background.

2. The differences between the imperative and FP versions of the code are striking. The FP versions are shorter, simpler, and once you are comfortable with the FP constructs, easier to understand. And by avoiding mutable objects, you don't have to deal with trying to get your code to work properly in a multi-threaded environment - something that is nearly impossible with imperative Java.

The main difference between imperative and FP is that with the former, you specify how you want to do things, whereas with FP, you specify only what you want to do, leaving the details to FP constructs such as the map() function. Venkat's approach makes that difference abundantly clear.

If you're new to Java, then this is probably not the book for you. However, if you've been writing imperative Java code for a while, I can't imagine a better way to learn the functional aspects of Java 8.

Finally, it's important to realize that Java 8 adds FP on top of imperative Java, which reminds me of the way C++ added OOP on top of C. As a result, some of the FP aspects of Java 8 are not as simple as in functional languages built with FP from the ground up, such as Clojure. Java 8 does not have first class functions, for example, so things like the Functional interface are a bit convoluted. Venkat does a fine job of guiding you through those rough spots, however.

Disclaimer: Venkat is a friend that I've known for a long time.

Basic introduction to functional programming for the traditional Java OO programmer

Venkat is an electric, hilarious, and knowledgable public speaker which prompted my purchase of this book. I was disappointed as it is very introductory. If you've followed any of his Scala talks or know the basics of functional programming, this book doesn't offer more content. The book is probably targeting complete functional newbies, and that is fine, but I was disappointed. I would still recommend his unique and creative presentations on YouTube or live if you can.

SUMMER OF THE DEAD by Julia Keller, is part of a series as the third installment (Bell Elkins Series #3) and boy oh boy, is Bell is in the middle of all sorts of problems— crime, mystery, and high drama in the old mining town of Acker’s Gap, West Virginia.

As Bell returns to her Appalachian hometown, readers meet bookworm, Lindy Crabtree—a coal miner's daughter with dark secrets of her own—secrets that threaten to explode into even more violence. Her father has more than dementia, a retired miner and as strange as they come, living in the cellar so he can feel as though he is still in a mine (and does not like visitors). All sorts of evil surrounding this household.

In addition Bell’s sister, Shirley is out of prison and is living with Bell. It is difficult to keep tabs on this one, much less control. She feels she owes her sister, after protecting her years ago from an abusive father. Thirty years have passed since that night, yet even now, when Bell contemplates her sister’s sacrifice, a sacrifice that had consumed so much of Shirley’s life—the prison sentence had been extended again and again by Shirley’s fighting and insubordination and by an escape attempt—Bell is overwhelmed.

However, along with her duties as prosecutor and the gruesome reality of Freddie Arnett’s unsolved murder there is also the fact her daughter would be arriving for a visit (and she is not looking forward to Carla seeing her aunt Shirley in the midst of rebellion, alcohol, cigarettes, and self-pity).

This was my first book by Julia Keller, and looking forward to going back and reading the previous books in the series. The author did an outstanding job of creating a strong connection between sisters and the characters for a positive takeaway, in the midst of this suspenseful and dark page-turner crime thrilling mystery and tragedy—which makes for a satisfying and engaging read, as Bell takes a journey as she deals with her past. (Loved Bell!)

Julia’s acknowledgement included the inspiration for this book, which can be haunting—as SUMMER OF THE DEAD, portrayed the devastating long term effects of these stricken miners. Highly Recommend!

A twisting turning mystery!

Bell Elkins is a county prosecutor for Acker’s Gap, West Virginia. She has her hands full with the investigation of an elderly man murdered in his driveway. She cannot understand why anyone would have a reason to kill him. She is also dealing with her sister’s return from prison. Shirley, her sister, has been in prison for thirty years for the murder of her and Bell’s abusive father. When Shirley returns to live with Bell, there is a lot of friction because Shirley is acting wild and disrespectful to Bell. She is living a dangerous life and Bell is both worried about her sister and angry about her sister’s behavior. But Bell also feels guilty that Shirley’s life took the turn that it did because she was protecting Bell from an abusive father. Bell was able to live the life she has and become the person she is through her sister’s ultimate sacrifice.

There are many different characters that we read about. There is Bell, there is Shirley, and there is Sheriff Fogelsong, who is also a friend to Bell. There is also Lindy Crabtree, who lives in the town and loves books and science above all else. And there is Lindy’s father, who is a ex- coalminer who is suffering from dementia. He lives in the basement, living under tables and amongst limbs and rocks and coal that Lindy has put down there for him. He rarely leaves the basement and never leaves the house. Or so Lindy thought.

Bell Elkins is the character that is the most portrayed and developed. It is her story we learn, her emotions we read about and her hopes and fears we feel. We learn about her determination, her frustrations, her guilt and her loyalty. She is definitely someone you would want to be friends with and you would definitely want to have in your corner. The other characters in the book are also well developed and well rounded. The interactions between the characters are very realistic and add so much to the story.

The author is very descriptive in her writing style. So much so that I feel at times it was a little too much. I feel like it made the book a longer read then it needed to be. I found myself sometimes skimming through paragraphs to get back to the action. To me this was a distraction from the plot and the flow of the story. Other readers may find the descriptive writing of most details in the book a positive aspect of the book.

Where I did like the descriptive writing was the details about the people living in a West Virginia coal mining town. It showed the desperation of these people who no longer have the mines for their economic growth. It also shows the pride these people have and how hard working they are. This desperation and pride where displayed throughout the entire book and I thought this was a great addition to the story. Another area where the description was a plus was when the murders were being described. I felt like I was right there watching the activities happening around me and seeing the aftermath of the killings.

There are a few murders taking place throughout the book and the mystery and suspense are carried out from the beginning to the end of the book. There are so many twists and turns thrown in that I found it impossible to determine the killer. I love when I cannot figure out the mystery, when I think I have it all figured out and then I find out I am totally wrong. That to me is a good mystery/suspense read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a twisting, turning mystery that is full of suspense. This is the third book in the series and it is the first book that I have read. I feel that it was a stand-alone book and I don’t feel that it was a problem not having read the first two. But i do plan on reading the other two at some point.

Love being back in Ackers Gap

Usually a series gets a bit stale as it goes along. But this one gets better with each new novel. I raced through this, and the ending was shocking yet satisfying. Once again the rural scenery is richly detailed. And I loved being with these characters again. I really hope there are many more.
