About the Author
Alex Fowkes is a freelance designer based in London, UK. While working full time Alex completed lots of typography based briefs in his spare time, from personal pieces to commissions and album covers. His work varies from hand drawn type to digital typography but always tries to retain a human element to his work. The Sony Timeline is the biggest typographical piece he has undertaken taking almost 150 square meteres, taking over 2 months just to design.

Good book for inspiration and reference

[[VIDEOID:mo24XD80SBE58VL]]Author and designer Alex Fowkes said that this book was created out of a love for playful typography. Indeed. Many of the examples showcased present playful ways in which you can reimagine typography, and use them in exciting and fun manners.

The book covers four different styles of typographic work, namely hand rendered, vintage, playful and contemporary. The work featured clearly are curated for their beauty.

The first section on hand rendered typography looks at the creative lettering and type designers. A total of 72 are featured. They talk about their inspiration and process, and also specifically at selected pieces of their work.

The examples are beautiful, and it's not just typography but there are also other design elements at work to make the whole illustration work. There's a good variety of refreshing styles to check out. As such, it serves as a good reference, a book you'll want to browse through when facing a creative block.

The first section has 170 pages, and the book has 208 pages.

The second section is a workshop on type basics. It talks about the construction of a type. Using existing typefaces, you're invited to create your own range of type-based work. There are perforated pages with specimen sheets containing all the alphabets in different styles. These sheets are used for reference so you can trace over them and modify from there. The sheets have four sans serif, four serif, four script and four display type.

Drawing Type is a good resource for graphic and type designers. It's not so much a technical book on creating type, although you're introduced and invited to experiment with the selected reference typefaces that are picked out.

Great Book, Misleading Title

I have to say the title is misleading. This book has a few pages tacked on the end that are actually "how to." The rest is a collection of amazing artwork by famous lettering artists... which is exactly what I was looking for. I had to knock it a star because it's worthless a how-to illustrate letterforms book as it claims in the title. But I love referencing this book when starting a new piece. My favorite book on typography and lettering. Interesting interviews with artists who share their technique and styles. They all give really good insight into their design process. Wouldn't really call this a "how to" book. More of an influence, really. Highly recommended.

Despite the critical ambivalence, the author certainly has the credentials to write this book. Brizendine graduated from the Yale University School of Medicine and draws on research done at the Women's and Teen Girls' Mood and Hormone Clinic, which she founded at UCSF in 1994. Neuropsychiatrist Brizendine acknowledges she may be going out on a lonely limb by asserting that males and females have distinctly different brains. She says that, in addition to certain hard-wired dissimilarities, male and female brain chemistries differ in being powered by hormones so potent they can reshape each gender's conception of reality (which in no way is related to ability). Thanks to advances in noninvasive imaging technology, such as positron-emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans, scientists have been able to quantify the effects of hormones on brain receptors. They have also been able to study how and when surges of specific hormones "marinate" the brain, affecting everything from gender education to sexual responsiveness to aggression. Brizendine doesn't rule out socialization as a factor in gender identification, but she insists that biology must take at least half the credit. What with nearly 70 pages of references to the research upon which she constructs her argument, out on a limb Brizendine may be, but who's left to hand her a saw? Donna Chavez

THE FEMALE BRAIN

I chose this book to gain an alternative insight into myself as a woman. But more importantly, I felt that traditional methods of evaluating women from research methods employed in sociology, psychology, economic, financial, geo-political, politico-economic, socio-economic, and legal studies were clinically and practically valid but fragmentary and non-integrative with the biomedical model. I could favor a holistic diagnosis method too. However, there had to be a neurologically-based intelligent method of evaluating and understanding women. I mean, the Creator had to have an intelligence behind our nature. It was a simple matter of employing them properly. Feminism sought to liberate women from the sin, incompetence, and fallacies of Freud as well as other fallen misunderstood interpretations of women's biology, biochemistry, and psycho-biological and hormonal complexities. I was an avid lover of herbs and aromatherapy but could not afford to invest in those branches of education in order to cultivate an alternative understanding. I could not afford to learn all different religious interpretations either.

I found it ironic that feminism wanted to divorce themselves from fallen teachings of traditional psychiatry and other fallen neurological interpretations in order to prevent misdiagnosis. However, by eliminating the discipline of neuroscience and neuro-hormonal studies altogether, women can be disempowered by lacking the tools and insight to treat themselves and modulate their brain and bodies which are the true tree of life (more than a sanctuary). Women need to know in other historical contexts not mentioned in this book that ancient ancestral females were intelligent enough to time their hormones which is the core of female intelligence validated through this book.

I recommend all clinicians, parents, mental health professionals, teachers, religious leaders, and individuals read this book regardless of your faith-based upbringing. This book may either validate your teachings or challenge your original assumptions and prejudices you never knew you had.

It is not a mystery of why women are the way they are. Definitely buy this book!

A Must Read for Husbands and Fathers

This is an outstanding book! It is very well written and researcherd. I only wish I would have read it before I married and had four children. It would have saved me many unnecessary arguments, and it would have taught me to be patient with my children, particularly my two daughters. It has, however, prepared me for future in-law children and grandchildren.

Brizendine gives incredible insight into female behavior, based on advancements in nuerology. She explains everything from the monthly emotional turbulence in women to why they possess extraordinary skill in relationships, communication, motherhood, and spousal forbearance. She also teaches us what to expect in every phase of life from the troublesome teenage years to motherhood to menopause. The references alone are worth the price of the book. I highly recommend it.

Great Insights for both Men and Women

I read this book years ago and still remember some of the insights I learned from it. I bought and read the sequel "The Male Brain" and found that book equally informative about people's behaviors. I heard the author interviewed on various NPR programs, including Terry Gross' "Fresh Air" and my local public radio station KQED's program "Forum". This book and its "companion" "The Male Brain" should be delightful reading for parents, their teenage and adult kids and college freshmen, who must navigate life's challenges on their own as newly minted, liberated adults in the fast-moving, evolving environments in colleges (and universities), especially if they live on-campus or away from home (off-campus housing). These books can be used as "self-help" books are budding adults, whether they are young men, young women or young couples. Long-term couples and their parents can benefit hugely from reading this book and its companion.

There's How You Think You Learn, and There's How You Learn!

Okay, well maybe I am overstating that a little. But the main "thesis" of Peter Brown's book - aside from being a summary of what cognitive science data shows about how we learn - is basically that many of the things we often assume about learning are wrong. Here are some of them: we learn best by reading and rereading a passage until we really understand it. WRONG! We learn best when we isolate a skill and practice it over and over again. WRONG! We all have learning styles that are the way we learn best. WRONG! IQ (or something like it) imposes relatively firm limits on how much information we can absorb. WRONG!

In this pretty easy-reading book, Peter Brown summarizes some of the latest findings in cognitive science, and many of these findings contradict what is often assumed about learning. First, many k-12 and college students are taught to (and do) use the 'reread and highlight' method to try and absorb content. Well, while this works to an extent, it leads more to an illusion of mastery than mastery. What works better? Read the content and quiz yourself; information retrieval is the key. Retrieving helps to build stronger connections in the brain that will lock information into memory. What's more - and this is another chapter - the harder the retrieval, the stronger your retention of what is retrieved. (So, writing a short essay recalling the concepts works better than true/false and multiple choice recall.)

Another myth? While we all certainly have learning preferences (I like to receive my information in written form), that doesn't mean we learn best when receiving information in that form (I can do as well when I receive information audibly as when it is written, even though I prefer the latter). Brown reviews literature that shows that, at least as of now, there is no evidence that shows that how one receives information substantially affects how well we learn the material (after all, hearing or reading a phone number is immaterial to what i am remembering: not the sound or sight of the number, but the number itself). But what they do find is that whether one is an "example learner" or a "rule learner" does have an impact in how well one learns. That is, those who see and practice a math problem and are able to see what the rules are behind the example and commit the rule, rather than the example, to memory will tend to learn better. Also, another factor that affects how well we learn is our mindset, whether we learn for mastery or learn for performance. Those who learn for performance - so that they can show how good they are - tend to tackle learning new things (things that might make them look bad) with trepidation, but those who learn for mastery aspire to acquire new skills openly, without regard to whether they will fail before mastering.

These are just some of the lessons from this book. Whether you are a student, teacher, professor, coach, trainer, or any other professional whose job entails teaching others, this is a good book to have. (I'm a professor in a College of Education, and I definitely plan on allowing what I've gleaned from this book to inform my practice.) It is quite informative not only by way of learning theory, but backs up the theory with both empirics and suggestions for practice. Good one.

How the Mind Learns - a how to guide, with stories

Is there anything new in this book? I believe there is sage advice in it for many of us.
That our brains adapt is good but also bad for studying. We become bored.

For many of us, we were never taught how our minds work and how we should leverage its natural processes to learn. Sometimes, practice or studying feels painfully slow and we often switch to another method that feels good. Unfortunately, we often fail at assessing how much we're learning and have actually learned.

Some students were never taught how to learn, and had few, if any, good teachers/mentors.
Some teachers were never taught how to teach, and have forgotten what it was like to be a student.
This book is for those both groups. The examples and advice for teachers and corporate trainers is also well written and useful.

If you have had good teachers or learning examplars, you might find this book less valuable than will most people.

SUMMARY:
PROs: This book will show you how to structure your learning and assessment processes to learn and confirm you're actually retaining the material. It provides 27 pages of endnotes on scientific studies that support its recommendations. Having read and applied the principles of both MIS and WSSK (see below), I can say they do work, very well.

CONs: Be prepared to look for what you want. Most of us will focus on the prescriptions of Chapter 8: e.g. avoid rereading as a primary study method, and do use the blank paper assessment test, etc..

While reading, I noticed two points made by the authors that will shape your experience:
1) page ix in the Preface: "first author is a storyteller"
2) page 200: "early readers (of the book draft) urged the author to get specific with practical advice"

I agree with reviewers Soumen, T. Pagni, Economist: yes, the book could've been much shorter and focused on the advice.
I also agree with the numerous reviewers who praise it: yes it provides excellent practical insight into the best ways to learn (both physical and mental tasks).

I will now use the book to evaluate the book.
1) Interpret/Elaborate/Infer from what I'm reading:
Why is a storyteller the first author? I'm glad they told me. I'm now prepared to wade through long winded stories to find the main points.

2) Find the underlying rules/principles in what I've read:
- Allow time to forget. You MUST give yourself time to partially, but not completely, forget the material. Then give yourself time to struggle with recalling it.
- Effortful (i.e. NOT effortless!) recall is good. It dramatically increases retention.
- sustained, deliberate practice, even when it feels ponderous, is helping me learn
- Trust the process of study, forget, retrieve.
- Reflection is a form of retrieval practice.

3) Scatter/Vary/Mix the information while you're studying it.
By mixing the precepts in with the stories, the patterns were harder to see. I had to pick up the book several times because I was so annoyed by all the storytelling. However, DURING REFLECTION away from the text, I realized they were deliberately embedding kernels in the stories and forcing me to look for them. Upon revisiting the material, I found myself *wanting* to find and connect the ideas spread across the stories and the book. Clever, and more effective than giving me a list to memorize. During retrieval practice, I actually started remembering some of the advice from the stories, moreso than from the explicit recommendations.

4) Change the material BEFORE you've mastered it in that session
What are they trying to teach me? Sometimes before they "got to the point", they switched to yet another story (!)
This made me really focus on connecting what I read previously to what I was currentl reading.
Thankfully, the chapters often end with a "Takeaways" section.

RELATE IT TO WHAT I ALREADY KNOW:
I consider this book (MIS) a valuable complement to What Smart Students Know by A. Robinson (WSSK).
WSSK tells you in much greater detail what to do while you are a matriculating student i.e. how to approach the conventional schooling process, how to assess class/book structure, how to relate the material to what you've learned, what specifically you should during the pre-study, study and post-study periods.

MIS does present specific study methods but it also presents the bigger picture of learning:
Why the "learn via re-reading" intuition is wrong, yet feels right.
Why the "learn via struggling" process is right, yet feels wrong.

In general,
WSSK fully develops the terse advice of MIS p207: Elaborate/question/interpret what you're reading
MIS fully develops the terse advice WSSK p118: Quiz yourself Periodically.
Both are excellent resources for improving your habits for studying from books.

Personally, the advice in this book is worth far more than the cost of $21, and a few hours of reading, reflection and note-taking that I paid for it. I do recommend you buy it and apply its principles, even to itself.

Finally a learning book based on science!

You switch before each practice is complete… You need to shuffle your flashcards.”

Best practice: Space repetition
Discussion: “Repetition by itself does not lead to good long-term memory… It makes sense to reread a text once if there’s been a meaningful lapse [at least a day in between] since the first reading.” “The increased effort required to retrieve the learning after a little forgetting has the effect of retriggering consolidation, further strengthening memory.” “Design quizzing and exercises to reach back to concepts and learning covered earlier in the term, so that retrieval practices continues and the learning is cumulative.” Spiral upward at increasing levels of difficulty with each re-exposure.

Discussion: “Retrieving knowledge and skill from memory should become your primary study strategy in place of rereading.” There are many methods of retrieval practice. Elaboration, expressing new material in your own words and connecting it with what you already know to find new layers of meaning, for instance by writing daily summaries, is the most effective. In the troubled years following the Civil War, the spirit of a murdered child haunts the Ohio home of a former slave. This angry, destructive ghost breaks mirrors, leaves its fingerprints in cake icing, and generally makes life difficult for Sethe and her family; nevertheless, the woman finds the haunting oddly comforting for the spirit is that of her own dead baby, never named, thought of only as Beloved.

A dead child, a runaway slave, a terrible secret--these are the central concerns of Toni Morrison's Pulitzer Prize-winning Beloved. Morrison, a Nobel laureate, has written many fine novels, including Song of Solomon, The Bluest Eye, and Paradise--but Beloved is arguably her best. To modern readers, antebellum slavery is a subject so familiar that it is almost impossible to render its horrors in a way that seems neither clichéd nor melodramatic. Rapes, beatings, murders, and mutilations are recounted here, but they belong to characters so precisely drawn that the tragedy remains individual, terrifying to us because it is terrifying to the sufferer. And Morrison is master of the telling detail: in the bit, for example, a punishing piece of headgear used to discipline recalcitrant slaves, she manages to encapsulate all of slavery's many cruelties into one apt symbol--a device that deprives its wearer of speech. "Days after it was taken out, goose fat was rubbed on the corners of the mouth but nothing to soothe the tongue or take the wildness out of the eye." Most importantly, the language here, while often lyrical, is never overheated. Even as she recalls the cruelties visited upon her while a slave, Sethe is evocative without being overemotional: "Add my husband to it, watching, above me in the loft--hiding close by--the one place he thought no one would look for him, looking down on what I couldn't look at at all. And not stopping them--looking and letting it happen.... And if he was that broken then, then he is also and certainly dead now." Even the supernatural is treated as an ordinary fact of life: "Not a house in the country ain't packed to its rafters with some dead Negro's grief. We lucky this ghost is a baby," comments Sethe's mother-in-law.

Beloved is a dense, complex novel that yields up its secrets one by one. As Morrison takes us deeper into Sethe's history and her memories, the horrifying circumstances of her baby's death start to make terrible sense. And as past meets present in the shape of a mysterious young woman about the same age as Sethe's daughter would have been, the narrative builds inexorably to its powerful, painful conclusion. Mixed with the lyric beauty of the writing, the fury in Morrison's (Song of Solomonp latest book is almost palpable. Set in rural Ohio several years after the Civil War, this haunting chronicle of slavery and its aftermath traces the life of a young woman, Sethe, who has kept a terrible memory at bay only by shutting down part of her mind. Juxtaposed with searing descriptions of brutality, gradually revealed in flashbacks, are equally harrowing scenes in which fantasy takes flesh, a device Morrison handles with consummate skill. The narrative concerns Sethe's former life as a slave on Sweet Home Farm, her escape with her children to what seems a safe haven and the tragic events that ensue. The death of Sethe's infant daughter Beloved is the incident on which the plot hinges, and it is obvious to the reader that the sensuous young woman who mysteriously appears one day is Beloved's spirit, come back to claim Sethe's love. Sethe's surviving daughter, Denver, immediately grasps the significance of Beloved's return and so does Paul Dno period after D, another escapee from Sweet Home; but Sethe herself resists comprehension, and, as a result, a certain loss of tension affects the latter part of the narrative. But this is a small flaw in a novel full of insights, both piercing and tender, with distinctive, memorable characters, flowing prose that conveys speech patterns with musical intensity and a brilliantly conceived story. As a record of white brutality mitigated by rare acts of decency and compassion, and as a testament to the courageous lives of a tormented people, this novel is a milestone in the chronicling of the black experience in America. It is Morrison writing at the height of her considerable powers, and it should not be missed. BOMC main selection.

Morrison, whose myth-laden storytelling shone in Song of Solomon and other novels, has created an unforgettable world in this novel about ex-slaves haunted by violent memories. Before the war, Sethe, pregnant, sent her children away to their grandmother in Ohio, whose freedom had been paid for by their father. Sethe runs too, but when her "owners" come to recapture her, she attempts to murder the children, succeeding with one, named Beloved. This murder will (literally) haunt Sethe for the rest of her life and affect everyone around her. one of Morrison's finest books

As a a high school English teacher, I've reread this book about 8 times and have taught it over the years to many students. Although it's certainly a complex novel, it's basic storyline is not hard to follow -- just the narrative style which shifts voices quite a bit. One thing that helps when reading anything by Morrison, but especially Beloved, is to remember that she herself is a classicist. Do yourself a favor and read the Medea myth -- you will suddenly understand 100 times more than you would if you skip it. I would also recommend NOT watching the movie, particularly if you are looking for explanations. Parts were well done, but the book is so rich that it seems mean to lower the dignity of the prose by showing private scenes. It's an incredibly rich and lyric novel with strains of Morrison's rendition of a kind of Magic Realism style. Don't expect everything to be realistic: there are ghosts and half painted characters that cross our normal boundaries of time. Expect to be disoriented at the beginning, but the plot clears up as you go and then you can go back and re-read the opening chapters. A great work of literature which yields more after every reading.

This Novel is a Classic of American Literature

This is a very complex novel based on a true story of a slave woman who killed her children in order to prevent her slave owner from taking them back into slavery. The story does not develop in a linear fashion but rather goes back and forth - sometimes in the present then again in the past. Slowly and bit by bit we learn the story of Beloved, the mysterious girl who shows up one day at Sethe's & Denver's house. The narration, when it gets close to revealing the truth, descents into stream-of-conscience prose; and yet, even this makes sense if one is willing to read carefully and patiently.
Furthermore, I would suggest reading the book before watching the Movie "Beloved" with Opra Winfried (sp.?). It is a spell-binding film, but it makes more sense when one has read the novel first.
Toni Morrison richly deserved her Nobel Prize for Literature. I don't understand why the film did not garner an Oscar for best film, nor all the actors in the major roles.

I am convinced that Toni Morrison is the best writer in the world. My gosh--how can someones soul paint such vivid and emotional characters, era, such real feelings. Not the best place and era to be transported to but Professor Morrison will certainly do it. This book alone put Toni Morrison in a category all by herself... I mean I can go on and on and on and on about her literary style, gifts and etc. If you haven't read this yet it's a must for a realistic escape.
