Traditional without being the same old thing

This is a different type of crochet book still with some of the traditional designs, but with some added zing. These designs are all done with attention to detail. These are not just thrown together and are not boring. They are truly artistic works done by top designers. Here are the main contents of the items in the book:

Even the names are works of art! And as you can see, each section has specific tips concerning that particular type of crochet work. Each chapter has a mini-workshop to help the crocheter succeed with each pattern.

The mixing of lace and single crochet struck me as quite different in Cabine de Dentelle. This would be best used as a decorative piece, not for warmth. One piece I particularly like is Van Gogh Waves; it is just gorgeous and lush looking. I love the colors and the wave design does indeed remind me of Van Gogh's art. Also, I usually don't like cables in crochet, but these are better looking than most and used to full advantage in these afghans.

The yarn requirements are clearly stated. They use some sweet yarn, but substitutions would be easy to do. The rest of the pattern is very readable in a good font and each special stitch is explained in detail. All skill levels can use this book, but I would say it's more for intermediate crocheters, rather than for beginners.

This book isn't perfect, but then again sometimes all those 'out there' type crochet books really aren't for the usual person looking for some unusual designs. They can sometimes look a bit too artsy to be practical. I think this book balances the two approaches and I can recommend it to anyone looking for a slightly different approach to the usual afghans.

Designs Are More "Traditional" Than "Unexpected"

In compiling this collection of traditional but thoroughly modern afghans, crochet designer Robin Chachula asked other well-known designers "to use the afghan as a vehicle to showcase their favorite aspect of crochet." The designers responded with afghans using crochet cables, colorwork, lace, granny motifs, and Tunisian crochet.

In purchasing this book, I was hoping for more of the "unexpected". Thus I was somewhat disappointed by the "traditional" look of most of the afghan designs. Two of the most intriguing designs are Vika (Celtic cables and knots) and Bethlehem Star (inspired by the Bethlehem Star quilt pattern). However, Vika's central Celtic knot is accomplished with applied I-cord, and Bethlehem Star's motifs are made from small, individually-crocheted pieces (the rays of the stars) that must be sewn together. Thus I can't see myself making either afghan, although both are quite pretty.

However, you can't go wrong with a pattern collection published by Interweave Press! The crochet instructions are given in both written-out and charted form, and the full-color photographs of the afghans (including closeups showing important details) are beautiful. The individual patterns include quotations from the designers, plus tips for making the particular afghan look its best. For example, the Vika tip explains how to avoid catching your stitches on other stitches when you're working post stitches behind stitches already worked; the Cabine de Dentelle tip explains the importance of blocking the squares by carefully ironing them.

Many of the designers have contributed short motivational "Beginner Tips" in the book's introduction. The cable designs are by Robyn Chachula, Marty Miller, Drew Emborsky, Annie Modesitt, Jill Wright, and Simona Merchant-Dest. The granny motif designs are by Robyn Chachula, Linda Permann, Ellen Gormley, Edie Eckman, Annette Petavy, and Tammy Hildebrand. The colorwork designs are by Robyn Chachula, Kathryn Merrick, Leigh Radford, Carol Ventura, Kimberly McAlindin, and Mary Beth Temple. The lace designs are by Robyn Chachula, Tracie Barrett, Kristin Ohmdahl, Marly Bird, and Doris Chan. The Tunisian crochet designs are by Robyn Chachula, Darla Fanton, Diane Halpern, Dora Ohrenstein, Kim Guzman, and Megan Granholm.

Not for the beginner

I agree with both of the other reviewers that this is quite a special afghan book and will be appreciated by the advanced crocheter looking for something unusual. The first section of cables is for me the most difficult one. I like the Tunisian crochet and the lace and granny sections. The afghans I'd most like to make are the Tunisian crochet sampler by Ohrenstein, Van Gogh waves by Guzman and Starburst entrelac afghan by Granholm. This book doesn't have a lot of information on doing the cable stitches. with all of the regular type afghan books it's good to have one that is definitely original by lots of well known designers working today.

Well made, high quality book

Halloween Hustle by Charlotte Gunnufson is a well made children's book that tells the story of a skeleton that dances along the street and meets up with friends as they all go to a party. Along the way he trips a few times and after his bones fall apart he puts himself back together through various means (rubber bands, tape, twine and glue).

This hardcover book is about 10 inches square, making it a good size to lay across laps as you sit next to your child to read it. It has about 30 pages with nice, thick, high quality paper loaded with fun, colorful illustrations by Kevan J. Atteberry.

Charming

I collect Halloween books, usually adding a few each year. It's hard for authors and illustrators to achieve very much originality in Halloween books--ghosts, witches, Jack-O-Lanterns, skeletons--what more can you do? This is one of the more unusual and original Halloween books I've seen for a long time. The illustrations are just charming. Children will certainly enjoy it, and, for an adult collector, the creativity is much appreciated. It's an excellent addition to my collection!

This is a fun, hilarious tale of Skeleton and his Halloween Hustle that will delight young children ...

The moon shone full behind the gnarly old tree. What's that wild and weird thing dancing up the street on the sidewalk? A strange little critter smiles and wags its tail as it watches Skeleton dance. "Bony thumbs and fingers snap. / Bony heels and toes tip-tap. / Knees knock-knock and elbows flap, / Doing the Halloween Hustle." Those toes tippity tapping up the street were moving fast ... until they caught in the crack on that sidewalk. Boom, bam! Down Skeleton went with a clatter. Oh, no, would he be able to do the Halloween Hustle if he was a mere pile of bones?

At the bus stop Frankenstein, Mummy, and witch watched in awe as "He sticks his bones back into place, / Adds rubber bands, just in case. / Gets up and grooves with ghoulish grace, / Doing the Halloween Hustle." Skeleton swung around the bus stop sign, danced for all to see, and off to town to buy some fancy duds to dance some more. all of a sudden a big black cat crossed his path. Boom, bam! Down Skeleton went with a clatter. Was is all over for Skeleton or would he be able to pull himself together in time for the dance contest?

This is a fun, hilarious tale of Skeleton and his Halloween Hustle that will delight young children. Just reading this infectious story in rhyme got me to tapping my toes. The beat was perfect and this must read aloud Halloween tale will get little ones to join in the fun with their own version of the Halloween Hustle. The bright, animated artwork brings the monsters and ghoulish characters to life in a non-scary manner. One of the best scenes is a lively two-page spread of all the monsters jumping and jiving, doing the Halloween Hustle at the dance contest. If you want a Halloween tale with a new twist, this is it!

An invaluable guide to the art of the moving camera

"New Cinematographers" is a beautifully produced and packaged book, full of insights into what goes on in the mind of some of the most creative and interesting cinematographers working today. There are sections devoted to each of several new cinematographers, and chapters on several of the films they worked on. Readers of the book basically get to look at refined notes by some of the contemporary masters of cinema (Lance Acord - Buffalo '66, Being John Malkovich, Lost in Translation; Jean-Yves Escoffer - Lovers on the Bridge, Gummo, Good Will Hunting; Darius Khondji - Delicatessen, Se7en; John Mathieson - Gladiator, Matchstick Men; Seamus McGarvey - High Fidelity, The Hours; and Harris Savides - The Game, Elephant), whose names are not as well known as the directors of the films they worked on, but who ought to be -- as this book makes abundantly clear, the body of work to which each of these cinematographers contributed bears the mark of their creative talents just as much as it bears the stamp of their directors or writers. The list of films covered reads like a catalog of all of the most visually compelling works by the most creative directors of the past decade (Being John Malkovich, Seven, Elephant, The City of Lost Children, etc.). There are pictures, diagrams, scripts, notes, all included to flesh out the process they went through in each film, and accompanied by an incredible wealth of detail about the filmmaking process, their experience with the director, their methods for planning for each shoot, their reflections on their craft, specific explanations on how they achieved some of the most interesting shots, and details about difficulties faced during each shot. Some of the most illuminating bits include some of the various reflections on how to capture the distinctiveness of particular faces, or how and why they decided to manipulate the look of a particular actor. Reading through this book is not only exciting and intriguing for me as a lover of film, but was also extremely rewarding in the wealth of insights it gave me into the decision-making process of a wide range of experts. This is an exceptional and extremely valuable book, well worth owning.

About the Author
John Gunther was born on August 30, 1901 on the North Side of Chicago. He was one of the best known and most admired journalists of his day, and his series of "Inside" books, starting with Inside Europe in 1936, were immensely popular profiles of the major world powers. One critic noted that it was Gunther's special gift to "unite the best qualities of the newspaperman and the historian." It was a gift that readers responded to enthusiastically. The "Inside" books sold 3,500,000 copies over a period of thirty years.

While publicly a bon vivant and modest celebrity, Gunther in his private life suffered disappointment and tragedy. He and Frances Fineman, whom he married in 1927, had a daughter who died four months after her birth in 1929. The Gunthers divorced in 1944. In 1947, their beloved son Johnny died after a long, heartbreaking fight with brain cancer. Gunther wrote his classic memoir Death Be Not Proud, which was published in 1949, to commemorate the courage and spirit of this extraordinary boy. Gunther remarried in 1948, and he and his second wife, Jane Perry Vandercook, adopted a son. John Gunther died on May 29, 1970.

John Gunther wrote DEATH BE NOT PROUD as a moving record of the last months of the life of his son, Johnny, who had died, as the result of a brain tumor, at the age of seventeen. Throughout his long and painful fight for his life, Johnny had maintained a cheerful outlook, and continued to hope that, somehow, he would go on. His father, in writing this book, made sure that Johnny did go on.
I'm sad that some of the younger (I assume) reviewers of this book found it wanting in pathos, or whatever it was that they thought was missing. Perhaps, with the coming of maturity, they will realize what a remarkable book it is. The fact that John Gunther was able to write this book at all, probably with tears in his eyes, was an amazing feat.
The death of a child is probably the most heart-wrenching loss that anyone can experience. I know. I, too, lost a son aged seventeen. That was 21 years ago, just three months after my son's seventeenth birthday. The pain of that loss is still with me after all those years. Just writing a review of John Gunther's book is almost too much. How much more difficult must it have been for Gunther to write DEATH BE NOT PROUD within two years of Johnny's death.
In spite of his own pain, Gunther wrote this book in hopes that other children and their parents who might find themselves in a similar situation "may derive some modicum of succor from the unflinching fortitude . . . . with which he (Johnny) rode through his ordeal to the end."
Before Johnny died he wrote a poem of prayer that ended as follows:
"Accept my gratitude
for all thy gifts
and I shall try
to fight the good fight. Amen"
And this when he knew he hadn't long to live. What a remarkable young man!

A More Meaningful Read Thirty Years Later

This book was brought to me by my now deceased grandfather more than 30 years ago. He was a fan of John Gunther Sr., and was deeply touched by John Jr.'s indomitable and loving spirit. As a young teen, I too was impressed with John Jr. I recently thought of the book when someone mentioned the actor Robby Benson. As a nurse and more importantly a mother of three, including a boy of Jr.s age, I felt a need to reread this memoir. I was immediately struck by three things: how far medicine has come since the late 1940s, the beautiful writing style of the author, and of course the depth and commitment of both of John Jr.s parents as they came together despite being divorced to love, and help make their son's journey easier. Part of what really touched my heart was the way each parent met John Jr.s needs in such different manners. This book could have turned into a maudlin "why us" story. The fact that it never did is both a testament to the author himself, and the very special young man at the center of the memoir. It is a wonderful read that spans the test of time. Additionally, I would like to add that despite all of medicine's advances, even now in the 21rst century, a similar diagnosis is just as serious, as I am reading another touching memoir called " Maryn's Hope-Memoir of a Beautiful Life by her mother Annette Cells.

saving my son

It is a real hard thing to try to make you understand what I have to say, only just say it. when I was in school and about 12 years old I bought this book. I read it over and over. It touched me more than I can say. The story is told by John Gunther. The story of his sons life with brain cancer. Johnny was only 17 years old when died, He spent years upon this earth in his 17 years. His whole family was changed by this young boy. That is to be expected of any family. But this was much different than you could ever think unless you live it. reading this book can bring love, hate, joy, hurt, and a new meaning to life for you and the love for your children and others. I know ! I was not there, but with God,a great doctor, and the impression this book was to my son. I got to keep my son 11 more years. You see, my son read this book when he was about 12 years old. I was so attached to this book I kept it for all these years. Some how even as a child I had a heart felt feeling as though Johnny was my own. And then one day he was!! In my own son! He had brain tumors most his life. He lived much as Johnny did. When the time came for my sons first surgery he refuged to have the surgery. It was so sever when they found it they had to do the surgery right away. My son said no. He was 14 years old. I was devastated, the doctors did not even say he would live at all. They expected the worse. but wanted to take the chance and I sure wanted that also. But my son still said no! The surgery was scheduled but he kept to , No!! Then the day before the surgery was planned his doctor came in to try to talk to us and make him understand how much this would mean to him. As the doctor sat on the bed beside my son, he ask his doctor had he ever heard of Johnny Gunther and the doctor said yes. He asked have you ever read the book? The doctor said yes. He asked was he like Johnny. The doctor said we need to find out for sure. we need to do the surgery. The doctor looked at my son and said, my father taught the doctor who did Johnny's' surgery. and took care of him. We all looked at the doctor with disbelief but the doctor repeated it and said I promise. My son reached and hugged the doctor and said ok do the surgery. We all cried that day, and hugged so much, the doctor did not want to leave that room. The doctors told me don't hope but pray as hard as we could. The next day he was in surgery for 8 and1/2 hours. I asked if I could stand in the hall while they wheeled him from recovery to ICU they said I could and approx. 21 others who were there for his surgery. As I saw the bed turn the corner I ran to the bed. I said I love you my baby. He opened the eye not covered and with his hand reached out for mine and said "momma I love you, too". No way to describe that moment. He lived the rest of his life much as Johnny did. He went to live in heaven in 1997. Please read the book. My book got lost, Never did I ever expect to see it again. So I just tried, gave it a long shot never believing I would ever find one again. And on amazon they found that book with the same cover as mine. Looked just like it, with a little wonderful ware just as mine did. What a wonder life is. Only at amazon!

Don't worry if you can't read Chinese lettering. If you can read knitting charts (and if you can't, join Ravelry.com and learn!), you will enjoy this treasure of a book. Well worth the $50 I paid. Highly recommended.

Fun Doctor Spin-Off

This audio spin-off from the Doctor Who series begins blandly, but gains depth and interest over the course of the four episodes. The series plays like old-style radio theater, with minimal sound effects and much left to the listener's imagination. Little would make sense here for listeners not already steeped in the Doctor's universe. Fans of River Song will enjoy another glimpse of her operating on her own, as well as the return of the Eighth Doctor. Plot twists don't match the best of the televised episodes, but the "Diary of River Song" does provide some surprises.

I haven't really been a huge fan of radio type audio books, but this one was extremely good. Also loved the extras cd at the end, it was great to hear some of the behind the scenes sort of stuff that goes on with a project like this. I really hope they do some more of these stories with River Song, and maybe also Clara, that would be great.

Our favorite psychopath is at it again!

The audio adventures of River Song has just begun, and it's a tremendous beginning. This first series consists of four stories not exactly from River's diary (although I'm sure they are later written in it after the events unfold), but the diary itself is vital to the plot. I love River's character, and Alex Kingston's performance shined especially on audio recording. I usually end up buying anything that's River Song included, but I was really looking forward to the combination of Alex Kingston and Paul McGann recording together.

I like to read the writer's notes before diving into the audio of each CD, but what had me initially confused was Matt Fitton's ("The Rulers of the Universe") explanation that River "knows their [the Doctor and River's] shared history can only begin with his Tenth incarnation..." which is something she has not experienced yet (being still alive and all) so how can she know this? The only reasonable explanation that I can think of is that she was told, perhaps accidentally by the Doctor or by stories she heard similar to her situation on Darillium in "The Husbands of River Song". I'm looking forward to future (or is it past) interactions between the Eighth Doctor and River in Doom Coalition 2.

In THE BOUNDLESS SEA, River has to stop a zombie apocalypse (sort of) in the early 20th century; in I WENT TO A MARVELOUS PARTY, River tries to solve a murder mystery while trapped on a spaceship with a bunch of megalomaniacs; in SIGNS, River joins up with her husband, Mr. Song, in trying to stop some planet-killing ships; and in THE RULERS OF THE UNIVERSE, River aids the Eighth Doctor in facing off against the original owners of the planet-killing ships as well as the megalomaniacs who orchestrated most of these events.

I feel like there are still some holes left in the story, such as the origin of Bertie Potts, but I suspect we'll be able to explore those more when series 2 comes out. Overall, this series is a must have for all fans of Doctor Who.
