An adequate book for beginners.

The problem with Life Insurance mathematics is that there are very few really good books on the topic. This book does little to alleviate this situation. Inspite of its title, "Fundamentals of Actuarial Mathematics" is essential a text book on Life Insurance mathematics. Of its 372 pages, 243 are devoted to Life Insurance mathematics (the remaining pages focussing on risk theory, in particular compound distributions, Markov chains, Poisson processes and ruin models, all of which are usually considered in the context of property and casualty or general insurance).

The explanations in the book are easy to understand and a reasonable number of worked examples and exercises are provided (with answers to the exercises given at the end of the book). However, at the same time, the explanations lack depth and the text book stops short of covering many of the more advanced topics in Actuarial Mathematics (such as increasing insurance policies and bonuses).

This is an adequate book for beginners and would be appropriate as a first text in Actuarial Mathematics. However, more advanced students are likely to find this book to be lacking.

Adequate, but full of errors

I must first admit this is a topic that I only have a mild interest in. The strengths of the book are that there are many worked examples, as well as proofs. There are also answers to most of the problems. The bad news is many of the answers are wrong. Newer printings have corrected many mistakes but a fair number remain. Before using this book download a .pdf file of the errata. You can find this by searching the key words Promislow & errata. The errata lists over 300 errors and is still not complete.

Good introduction to the topic

Before buying this book I had never had any exposure to actuarial mathematics. I was looking for a good introduction that would fit my mathematical skills (PhD Economist feeling comfortable with applied mathematics but lacking the training in mathematical to do proofs or anything similar). Promislow's book fully met my expectations and increased my interest for the subject. In fact I have purchased more books since.

It is true that the title is a little misleading as the book's primary topic is life insurance. However, there are three or four chapter dealing with risk theory providing a good introduction. What I found best in this book are the numerous exercises with answers in the back of the book. This allowed me to test my understanding of the subject and also what is important in each chapter. In some chapters it is not straightforward to see where the author is heading, however, the exercises compensated very well for this.

All in all I can warmly recommend this book to anyone who has a good background in mathematical economics at the level of Varian (Microeconomic Analysis) and who wants to get a good introduction into the topic.

Great ideas, boiled down to the essence

I was surprised to find that this book was a collection of ideas with little elaboration. However, the ideas are classic and mostly self-explanatory.

This is a short book that should be read repeatedly. The author has spent a lifetime in advertising and marketing and knows what matters most.

The power behind this book is in its beautiful simplicity. This book is a fresh departure from the many books on marketing plans and branding that are cumbersome and lengthy thus not regularly used. This book can be used as a powerful daily reference guide to new ideas and inspiration to build any brand and business.

About the Author
Heidi Gerard Kaduson, PhD, RPT-S, specializes in evaluation and intervention services for children with a variety of behavioral, emotional, and learning problems. She is past president of the Association for Play Therapy and co-director of the Play Therapy Training Institute. Kaduson has co-edited many books and maintains a private practice in Monroe Township, New Jersey.

Charles E. Schaefer, PhD, RPT-S, is professor emeritus of psychology, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Hackensack, New Jersey. Schaefer is cofounder and director emeritus of the Association for Play Therapy and a fellow of the American Psychological Association. Among Schaefer's sixty-five books are the outstanding Handbook of Play Therapy and The Therapeutic Use of Child's Play, both of which have become classics in the field. He maintains a private psychotherapy practice for children and their families in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Excellent resource for working as a professional with children

I have been using this in my therapy practice and have found it very resourceful. It has wonderful suggestions for the therapist to untilize in assisting children to express and resolve their issues when in situations they are unable to resolve through the expressions of words. They can express through play and in cognitve ways and it works!!!

Good to have on hand

I am giving this book the same review as it's more current version, 101 More Favorite Play Therapy Techniques. There are a lot of really good, creative ideas in this first version, just as there are in the newer version. However, the one thing that is lacking in both books is a quick statement at the begining of each activity that identifies what age group and what general problem the activity is most appropriate for. Such information allows me to decide, right away, whether to invest the time in reading further about the activity if I think it would be relavent to a particular child I am working with.

Very basic intro to play therapy

Although I have only had 5 years of experience in play therapy with elementary-age children, I felt that the techniques described in this book were basic and not very imaginative- in other words, I had already thought of many of them myself. Several of the techniques described are similar variations on the same theme; for example, the assigning colors to emotions and having kids color in hearts/bodies/etc. strategy was echoed numerous times. I suggest borrowing this from the library rather than purchasing it.
