Bushong's book excellent for a whole range of people who want to understand the fundamentals of MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Physical and Biological Principles

This book is remarkable in the way that it explains the fundamentals of MRI so clearly while using very, very few equations. Prof. Bushong uses a huge number of tremendously creative -- and often funny -- illustrations to achieve this accomplishment. Although this book is naturally insufficient for those desiring a fully mathematical understanding of MRI, it is ideal (except for its lack of discussion of Functional MRI) for those who want a firm visual understanding of MRI physics, and it is also one of those rare books that explains so many practical details of *actually using* MRI machines -- their possible dimensions, strength, weight, associated costs, associated building requirements, etc. It could also be a great first read for those who will eventually delve into the subject mathematically, and finally, could be an excellent book for a physician, nurse, businessperson, or layperson who won't have to directly deal with MRI but who wants to have a solid grasp of how it works. I strongly recommend this book!

This edition is far superior to the first. Descriptions of pulse sequences are easily understood and the diagrams are very useful. Folks that like Peggy Woodwards' book will find this one very similar.
It's worth the price for technologists studying for the national registry or just looking for a better understanding of MRI

Outstanding for the INVENTOR, Even With Its Flaws...

If you read ALL the reviews of ALL seven volumes of Graf's general encyclopedia series, PLUS Graf's 5 "specialty" circuit books (Oscillators, Amplifiers, Detectors, Measuring and Converters), you'll get a noticeable trend: these books are either for very new hobbyists or designers OR very experienced engineers!

Both are actually right, as the series depends on your goals. Since a lot of the info is outdated, it also means a lot is public domain, and you can find some real "gem ideas" that have been forgotten, and with modern component updates, can become the material for a new patent, or components thereof. Circle M's are usually abandoned within 9 years, and didn't even exist back then.

In that vein of advanced scanning, another advanced requirement is the ability to calculate missing values and spot mistakes. Eg. Graf gives a digital power monitor circuit with a missing reset switch and only one (R2) of two resistor values. You can use VSense=r1 + 10K/10K * 2.3, for example, to solve for r1, and use vsense over your VTP, with test values, to get your max voltage.

So, for the newbies, hobbyists and new inventors. Hey, with the right attitude, figuring out the mistakes (without blowing yourself up or burning your garage down) can be a challenge! If you compare circuits with online resources and the awesome McGraw Hill circuit (troubleshooting) series (volume 4 is awesome but very rare and expensive-- had to buy if from India: McGraw-Hill Circuit Encyclopedia and Troubleshooting Guide, Volume 4), you can become the Sherlock Holmes of the design world with this series! Think of it as a puzzle and you won't get as ticked off as some of this series' reviewers seem to!

I test circuits, especially for law firms and inventors, at payroy dot com, for reference, so my perspective and bias is new as well as experienced inventors. If you're an inventor and combine these series with, for example, Practical Electronics for Inventors, Third Edition, you'll have a wonderful and huge set of resources to compare TO the modern web or even smartphone app circuit resources. They say a chess grandmaster has 50,000 positions memorized, I'm guessing that the best inventors eventually have thousands of circuits in mind too! Learning to judge the bad from the good is what the other reviewers who trash this series know how to do-- but studying both good and bad is a GREAT way to learn the difference, as well as spot undiscovered or forgotten gems. Old isn't always bad!!!

"Moon River," "Blues In The Night," "Laura," "That Old Black Magic" and "Satin Doll" are only a handful from the enormous catalogue of hit songs written by Johnny Mercer. His wit and talent with words made him the peer of Cole Porter, Lorenz Hart, Ira Gershwin and Oscar Hammerstein II, giants in the pantheon of songwriters. Many have compared him with his idol, W.S. Gilbert.

Our Huckleberry Friend is a collection of Mercer's lyrics and memorabilia. It covers Mercer's life from his Savannah, Georgia, childhood through his Hollywood days and the remarkable productive period of the thirties, forties and fifties.

We see the birth of the lively Capitol Records label, and Mercer's association with Nat "King" Cole, Peggy Lee, Betty Hutton, and many others. Mercer went on to win four Academy Awards and to experience the shattering disappointment of several Broadway shows that failed.

It is all here, the successes and the failures, written by Mercer's widow and his close friend Bob Bach. The handsome volume is illustrated with more than a hundred photographs, many from Mrs. Mercer's private albums.

Bob Bach's name became nationally known among television audiences as the producer of the long-running and very successful panel show "What's My Line." He produced other game shows and musical specials featuring such greats as Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton and Mel Torme. Before entering the video field he wrote for Down Beat, Metronome and Billboard magazines.

Ginger Mercer, who was a dancer on the Broadway stage before marrying Johnny Mercer in 1931, is currently [1982] carrying on the traditions of her late husband. She is a member of the council of The American Guild of Authors and Composers and recently formed the Johnny Mercer Foundation for Children.

Reading this book was one insane trip

The book is a transcript of a 3 day seminar. On the first day, you will learn the basics of NLP. On the second day, you will start to learn how to apply NLP. On the third day, your eyes will be opened to the full range of posibilties that NLP presents.

The authors are very, very clever and, it was only until I finished the book, that I realized they were practicing what they were teaching the whole time: the book is basically a 3 day long NLP pattern. Once you finished the book, not only will you know NLP ideas, you will know how it is like to have it worked on you.

Extremely mind blowing stuff. I've read another NLP book before published by Harper&Collins but this one beats it 100x. This will be one of the books that I will never re-sell and will always keep with me from move to move.

These two guys are brilliant, creative

A transcript of a workshop done by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. These two guys are brilliant, creative, clever beyond reckoning, and can guide you by the hand out of overthinking. As a reformed overthinker, I can tell you that there is no such thing as overthinking, only ineffective thinking repeated endlessly. If you want to know more, just buy the book, wait a month, and see how you're doing.

They never discuss overthinking here, it's just that this book is such a stellar example of clear-headedness that it's liable to rub off on you.

How can I make things really groovy?

Frogs into Princes (1979) is the first-ever comprehensive book on Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). It's a seminar transcript [or "trance"-script, to be punny (since its co-founder Richard Bandler is also a hypnotist)] that was edited and published by John Stevens [a.k.a. Steve Andreas, who studied under Abe Maslow (hierarchy-of-needs) and Fritz Perls (founder of gestalt therapy)].

It's so well organized and presented, together with a detailed introduction, that you feel like you're a part of the live-audience. This leads to the paradoxical problem of reading the book too casually, similarly to passively watching a performance, as opposed to treating it as the actual manual of techniques and profound concepts that it really is (which are based on extensive research that began in 1973). The paradox is that that's exactly how the authors (Bandler and John Grinder) want you to read it - because you learn more, as they tell you, subconsciously - without attempting to consciously analyze or memorize the (otherwise overwhelming) new terminology and ideas. Ideally, you should re-read the whole book immediately after you're done with your initial reading, so you could finally completely understand the proper attitude and approach that the authors are trying to instill within you (yes, you must read it twice).

NLP is not a household name as such - whereas, its most famous teacher, for example, is: Tony Robbins, who was trained by co-founder Grinder [pronounced as in "grin", not "grind"]; it also is the scientific foundation of popular TV shows like "Lie to Me", which exemplify how to read subtle "eye accessing-cues" (and other body-language) found throughout Frogs Into Princes. As they write (on page 47): "Eye movements and body movements will give you information about process. The proper domain, in our opinion, of professional communicators is process. If you indulge in content, you are going to unavoidably impose part of your belief and value system on the people you communicate with. The kinds of problems that people have, usually have nothing to do with content; they have to do with structure, the form of how they organize their experience."

Bandler and Grinder say (on page 9): "Our job is to figure out what it is that effective therapists do intuitively or unconsciously, and to make up some rules that can be taught to someone else." They have done a phenomenal job of that over the years. In addition to educating you, they will also humor you - as in the following interspersed witticisms:

(page 9): "[Academics] are not interested in the real world, and having lived in it I can sometimes understand why."

(page 32): "You can't even spell 'phonetics' phonetically!"

(page 114): "...remembering to breathe; oxygen is essential for this whole process."

(page 166): "It's important for some people to have the illusion that their conscious mind controls their behavior. It's a particularly virulent form of insanity among college professors, psychiatrists, and lawyers."

Towards the end (page 190) of this pioneering 194-page book, they ask rhetorically "How can I make things really groovy?" - which is the above title of my review [that you've probably noticed at the subconscious level, right?] - after which they proceed to briefly discuss the limitless potential within NLP for "generative" change.

For those of you who might only want the latest, condensed, quick-and-easy, "self-help" version of NLP, I highly recommend Bandler's "Get the Life You Want" (2008). That one, you don't have to go over twice - and you could use it as a "pocket-guide", too. Frogs Into Princes - and especially, The Structure of Magic (vol. 1: 1975 & vol. 2: 1976) - is intended more for researchers or serious students of NLP.

What you always wanted to know about SAP HANA

This book teaches you how to implement effective and efficient SAP HANA “native” solutions also known as SAP HANA Stand-Alone solutions. It is not about SAP BW on HANA. If you have a solid background in relational databases, you will find many well-known concepts and surprising details. If you are familiar with ABAP programming or SAP BW development, this book will help you to adapt your mind to a new way of database modeling and development.
Do not expect another book rehearsing the stuff you learned for your SAP HANA certification or in the online documentation. This is just the foundation you have to bring. The book takes you from apprenticeship to mastery – it is not recommended for the beginner. But it is not easy reading. You should know the “terms of the trade” to benefit from the profound knowledge of the authors.
The remarkable characteristic is the highly structured collection of best practices, hands-on experience and runtime measure measurement covering the core features of SAP HANA. Almost three quarters of the 300 pages show precisely the behavior of information views, filters, calculated columns, joins and much more. SAP HANA offers with a lot of alternatives to answer a business question. But have you ever compared them in terms of their performance? The good news is: you need not – this book provides you with the necessary background knowledge to figure it out already in the design phase.
The authors analyzed the resource consumption (CPU time and main memory) response times in many situations which are typical when you develop a solution using mostly graphical modeling. I recommend replaying the more advanced technologies (e.g., impact of the KEEP flag, implementation of exception aggregation) on your own. This would make some statements in the book easier to comprehend. I am also missing more illustrations and examples in a couple of sections on advanced topics.
The scenarios are complemented with many references to SAP documents where the reader will find additional in-depth information. A chapter on general architecture challenges in operational reporting based on SAP HANA Stand-Alone solutions (also known as “Virtual Warehouse”) completes this most useful text book.

Become an Expert in SAP HANA Modeling !!

A real good book to start with for Advanced Modeling options.Very well explained about how to transform complex business requirements into HANA solution. Real time project issues have been discussed and proposed optimized solutions. Best practices are suggested to reduce the main memory consumption and reduction in execution time, thus resulting in overall performance improvement. Partitioning concepts are explained clearly. Comparison of different modeling techniques (developer perspective vs modeler perspective) and Background knowledge about different performance tuning techniques are well appreciated. I strongly recommend this book for Developers who are already in projects with good knowledge on HANA Modeling concepts and are looking for advanced concepts of SAP HANA Modeling.
We look forward to see the author's expertise suggestions on loading huge volume of Data in HANA, scheduling of jobs, CDS views, how best we can use tools like EIM, Performance improvements of calculated columns (like choosing Column engine AND SQL engine) to be discussed in the coming edition.

Welcome to the strange and wonderful world of Hong Kong horror movies, filled to bursting with flying ghosts, hopping vampires, seductive spirits, tree demons, evil sorcerers, living skeletons, possessed limbs and giant predatory tongues. Tsui Hark’s A Chinese Ghost Story in 1987 gave many Western viewers their first taste of supernatural thrills — Oriental style — yet the film was a comparatively late entry in a well-established genre. From Sammo Hung’s ground-breaking Spooky Encounters to King Hu’s valedictory Painted Skin, the 1980s Hong Kong ghost film cycle produced a stylish and distinctive body of work that compares with the best of Universal and Hammer. According to the standard version of events, Hong Kong cinema during the late 1970s amounted to little more than a series of tired Bruce Lee rip-offs. The posthumous release of Game of Death, which blended unused Lee footage with unconvincing ‘doubles’, merely underlined the film industry’s creative bankruptcy. Like most established movie lore, this bleak scenario doesn’t tell the full story by any means. For example, veteran stuntman, fight choreographer and supporting actor Sammo Hung had recently emerged as both a major star and a gifted, imaginative director. While most of his early work followed the standard formula of righteous kung fu vengeance, Hung was clearly a film-maker to watch. On the lookout for new material, Sammo Hung decided to blend supernatural elements with the usual high-impact martial arts and broad humour. The end result, Spooky Encounters, or Encounter of the Spooky Kind, proved a runaway success, creating a new genre: the kung fu ghost comedy. Around the same time, Hong Kong’s thriving television industry produced such notable ‘New Wave’ talents as Ann Hui and Tsui Hark, who’d both make major contributions to the ghost movie cycle. Leading action directors John Woo, Ronny Yu and Ringo Lam all worked on horror films early in their careers. Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun Fat romanced witches, fought demons and blew up monsters before he ever donned dark glasses and a trenchcoat. Five years on from Spooky Encounters, Sammo Hung produced Mr Vampire, arguably his greatest contribution to the genre. Along with Tsui Hark’s A Chinese Ghost Story, another major hit, Mr Vampire’s far-reaching success kept the spooky movie alive until the early 1990s. While the Hong Kong film industry still turns out horror movies on a regular basis, the great days of the ghost genre are long gone. Shifting audience tastes, industry crises, creative exhaustion and a talent exodus to the United States all played a part in this decline. The genre rarely attracts major film-makers now, mostly operating at the extreme low budget end of the industry. The Troublesome Night series, which currently stands at eighteen entries, is more notable for its survival in the face of meagre box-office returns than for the intrinsic quality of the films. On the bright side, the critical and commercial success of Ann Hui’s Visible Secret and the Pang Brothers’ The Eye suggests that the Hong Kong ghost genre may become fashionable again.

Somehow Daniel O'Brien's book Spooky Encounters came out without me noticing. I picked this book up a few weeks back and just couldn't put it down. O'Brien gives the most comprehensive history of Hong Kong horror films during the Golden Age of HK filmmaking (roughly the '70s through 1997) I've had the pleasure of reading since the second issue of Colin Geddes's groundbreaking zine Asian Eye.

At 180 pages, Spooky Encounter is jam-packed with information, reviews, and comparisons of HK Horror. O'Brien breaks topics down into the history of HK Horror, the Mr. Vampire series, the influential films of Tsui Hark, Category III blends of sex and scares, and the last days of HK Horror films in the wake of the '97 takeover. O'Brien ties the popularity of films back to their native HK box office gross which provides an interesting insight on how these films were received at the time compared to their legacy (or lack thereof).

O'Brien's prose makes the book easy to read. Moreover, his writing is clear and concise which helps to make sense of some of the more obtuse film plots and the use of Eastern legends in others. O'Brien doesn't take the easy road of gushing over the food films and demonizing the poor ones. His tone is even-handed though he doesn't shy away from taking some laugh out loud potshots when necessary. One of my favorite lines comes from his review of JULY 13TH / QI YUE SHI SAN ZHI LONG PO he writes, "While Alan and Laura appear to be back together, the enigmatic ending hints that their happiness will be short-lived. It also suggests that Wellson Chin and Abe Kwon didn't know how to end their film."

Highly informative and well-crafted, Spooky Encounters is a must-read for genre fans and cinephiles interested in an under-appreciated movement of cinema.
