Finally I can learn Arabic!

I have been taking Arabic in college for two years now. My teacher is great and teaches well, but still I always thought Arabic is way too hard for me, that I can't learn it no matter how hard I tried. But this book changed my whole perspective! This has to be one of the best programs I have used for Arabic thus far. It's set up very simple, it's perfect for beginners in this aspect. There are four books that come with pack, three are course book's that go from Beginner to Advanced and one book is dedicated to only teaching the script. The course books are set up like work books, it will give you a dialogue, grammar points and then exercises. The exercises vary from word searches and translating and vary between extremely easy and extremely hard. There are also quizzes at the end of each chapter to test yourself on your progress. In the beginning, it has a lot of "touristy" phrases but eventually it gets into very useful words. I think one chapter was on food and the week after I completed the chapter, I went to a Lebanese restaurant and was able to order a couple of things in Arabic, which for me was a huge achievement! I have used Living Languages Ultimate Arabic and I thought that was excellent also, but this one I think is a little better. I have to warn you that it is very formal Modern Standard Arabic, so if you are looking to learn a dialect don't bother with this program, but for Modern Standard it is fantastic. Also the audio is very clear and follows the book well. Each course book also features some dialogues that are on the audio. Another feature I love is the online flashcards, so I don't have to waste time making paper ones. I had gotten this book in the summer and this semester have noticed a really big improvement of how I'm doing in my Arabic class. I have to admit the book might not make you fluent in Arabic, but you will have a great head start. I really recommend this book.

Very Effective

There are so many language programs out there. I am very glad I got this one. It is very organized and very effective if you follow the program. I feel I must say nothing is easy so if you are looking for something easy studying a language isn't it. If you are willing to focus and really stop and check out how this program is organized you will be amazed at the way they have written this program. It is a step by step building block upon building block. That is the best way to learn. The audio is very good quality. I heard another program's audio and it was terrible, it made me appreciate this programs audio. As with any CDs it will get scratched somehow or the other sooner or later so I have made back up copies of my CDs.

I have spent a few minutes to make up a sheet for this program. It is a check off sheet. I find this is a great help in keeping track of my studies. I do this because along with this program I do some other online studies too to supplement my studies. I especially had to go outside of this program to get help with the script. I think some people will be great without doing that but I am kind of an extremely thorough person and like to overdo things but that works for me. On this study check off sheet I just followed the course and made it.

DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO SAYS THIS PROGRAM IS NOT GOOD. This really is an awesome program and you will get back even more than you put in. The price cant be beat. The set up of the program makes it very easy to follow and retain. Do not forget to go to their website and play the games and use the flash cards. You will even retain more that way too.

If you wish copy and paste the check off sheet i made below and follow it. Just check off each that apply as you go along the program. Each lesson has two sections. For example lesson 1 has a section titled Vocabulary Builder 1 and another section titled Vocabulary Builder 2, seems like all the lessons are like this. I actually didn't check all the lessons didn't have the time but what I checked that is what I saw. The check off sheet may not make sense to you when you look at it right now but when you get the program and start using it and see how the program is set up it will make sense.

In each section there are a series of lessons building upon each other. I do a check off sheet for each lesson. It feels pretty good to check off what I have done and even better to sign off at the end when I know I have nailed the lessons. Yea. I sign my check off sheet. It feels good to know its done and sealed in my memory. So have fun and best wishes on your arabic studies.

Absolutely Wonderful

I am new at the Arabic language. I originally spent a fair amount of time studying Persian, but I decided with the vast majority of Arabic speakers that this was a language I wanted to learn. I plan to take classes in the future and wanted to get a big head start on this language. The product has extremely surpassed my expectations. I was hesitant to purchase the complete edition because I felt intimidated by the Arabic language and thought I may require the platinum edition. After going halfway through the script guide (which is very easy to understand) I can honestly say I can read the majority of MSA words if I sound them out. I am very impressed because I have only spent a few days using the script guide and already am seeing my reading improve. The CD's included are also very nice and clear sounding. If you are a motivated learner I do not think you will require the platinum edition. For only $28.73 you really don't have much to lose. I am excited to continue using these books daily and watch my skills get better. I will recommend this product to anybody studying MSA.

Excellent colored pencil instruction

This book is exactly what I was looking for to learn how to draw birds with colored pencils, prompting me to write my first review here on Amazon. The book starts out with all the details about the supplies recommended, and then a very thorough general information section including pencil drawing basics, a very interesting section on the drawing process and creating the sketch, and an extremely valuable section on color theory basics covering color composition and value. Also covered in this section are bird shapes and anatomy, and the drawing details including the eyes, beaks, feet and feathers. There is a wonderful selection of birds to chose from, including cardinals, robins (my favorite is the fledgling pair), goldfinch, hummingbirds, bluebirds, chickadee, and many more, with the instructions for every one spread over several full pages each, and each with full-sized illustrations in step-by-step format, layer by layer. Alongside every illustration are very thoroughly written instructions to walk you through the details every step of the way, starting with the supply list and illustrated color palette for each project. I really appreciate the written instructions because they cover every detail and are very easy to follow. There is also a chapter on combining colored pencils with other media such as watercolor, inks, and graphite. I'm extremely happy with this book, and highly recommend it to all who love birds and want to learn how to draw them with colored pencils. I also love the colored pencil drawing of the author's cat at the beginning of the book, and hope she is working on a drawing cats with colored pencils book.

I have many books about drawing, watercolor and colored pencil in my library. This is without a doubt, hands down, the best book in my art-related library about the use of colored pencils! The author is thorough, yet accessible in her methodology and general background and enormously helpful in her book full of step by step illustrations. Each drawing has a sketch and illustrations of several steps toward a finished drawing, including a detailed color guide for each drawing. This is particularly helpful, whether you choose to use Prismacolor or Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils. I am delighted with the purchase!

This is a lovely book. More about pencil technique than about birds. There are a few pages at the beginning about bird anatomy and eyes, etc. but it is mostly about how to use colored pencils and all of the examples for the exercises are birds. The bird drawings are all beautiful and realistic and I cant wait to draw all of them. One thing I really like is that the author not only tells you where to use a certain stroke but she tells you the effect you will get - the why. For example page 74: " Add small, very light patches of Umber (medium lead type) randomly on the chest to indicate fluffiness" then there is an arrow on that part of the picture example that corresponds "indicate fluffiness". You will learn so much by following her directions!! I see why other reviewers have said their colored pencil skills improved after using this book. This is an excellent book and there is much more in it than my one example. This one is a winner.

You get what you pay for

Overall I would say don't bother with this book. See below for some additional explanation.

This text was used in my graduate kinetics course. The professor decided to use this book because the material covered was similar to what he intended to cover in the class. The book is also a fraction of the price of the previously used book (~$20 vs ~$180). The homework assignments throughout the course consisted of questions/problems at the end of each chapter in the book in addition to some questions the professor had generated or pulled from other books. The questions found in Carberry often were poorly worded. The text usually did not help to solve the problems. Besides causing a significant amount of stress doing homework this book has other problems including:

For whatever reason, the author decided to create his own symbols for various variables and constants in the equations. This made it difficult to relate equations in the book with the same or similar equations found in other literature.

The pages do not indicate which section of the chapter you are working in.

The index isn't very useful. Terms and concepts important to chemical engineering are not found in the index.

Very useful text for learning about catalytic reaction engineering. Text includes thorough definition/explanations of dimensionless numbers (Damkohler number, etc.) and their physical significance. Highly Recommended.

Dr. Rajkumar Buyya is a Fellow of IEEE, Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Future Fellow of the Australian Research Council, and Director of the Cloud Computing and Distributed Systems (CLOUDS) Laboratory at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He is also serving as the founding CEO of Manjrasoft, a spin-off company of the University, commercializing its innovations in Cloud Computing. He has authored over 500 publications and four text books including "Mastering Cloud Computing" published by McGraw Hill, China Machine Press, and Elsevier/Morgan Kaufmann for Indian, Chinese and international markets respectively. He is one of the highly cited authors in computer science and software engineering worldwide. "A Scientometric Analysis of Cloud Computing Literature" by German scientists ranked Dr. Buyya as the World's Top-Cited (#1) Author and the World's Most-Productive (#1) Author in Cloud Computing. Comprehensive and Technical

This textbook lays first the background about the core concepts of the Cloud Computing; namely, the Parallel & Distributed Computing and the Virtualization. Then, the authors reveal the concept of Cloud Computing in détail. In addition, the authors explain a CC environment: Aneka. Therefore, the reader may skip the first part if it is well known and target Part 2 directly about CC.
This book is excellent in laying the course syllabus about CC in universities for both senior levels Undergrads and postgraduate students.
In addition, the language style is easy. There are many figures which are self-explanatory.
I strongly recommend this book.

Romance story -- Great Descriptions, Okay Plot

Billed on the Kindle First page as a psychological suspense story, "Evelyn, After" would fit in nicely on a bookshelf with other Harlequin romance novels. If you are a fan of that genre, you will probably enjoy this book. Here is a quick review, without spoilers:

WRITING -- The reader experiences the story through Evelyn, and is privy to every thought she has while processing her husband's recent affair. Evelyn swims through various emotions in her attempts to come to grips with the events on the night she discovers he is cheating on her. The book can be a bit disorienting at times, as the author alternately subtitles each chapter as "Before" or "After." The reader is whipped back and forth in time, first experiencing Evelyn's initial reactions followed by the choices the "new" Evelyn makes, with the sequence repeated throughout the book. I can appreciate that this creates tension in the earlier chapters, but near the end of the book, a reader can easily deduce the events of the "Before" chapters because of facts already revealed in the "After" chapters.
Ms. Stone entertains the reader with many descriptive passages, such as: "She couldn't remember whatever demons she'd been fighting in her sleep, but there were plenty more crouched and waiting for her when she woke." Another great picture: "...she'd imagined herself growing into an artist with wild, creative friends...Now everything about her was dull...She was one of those moms she'd watched on TV as a child. The pleasant owner of a home on a cul-de-sac, a sight she'd only witnessed in movies until she'd bought that home for herself." These types of passages are peppered throughout the book, and made the book more enjoyable.

PLOT -- Ninety per cent of the book concerns Evelyn, centering on her thoughts and actions. Faced with her husband's infidelity as well as the secret she must share concerning her husband's last night with his mistress, Evelyn's subsequent actions at times might seem unbelievable. However, who can tell what a person's emotions might impel them to do, and the only time I had to suspend belief was when she talked about dropping four sizes in two weeks. Evelyn's choices made sense as she struggled to bring order to the chaos that suddenly invaded her normal life.

WHAT ABOUT... -- The author drops a couple of f-bombs as well as a vulgarity here and there. However, I felt the f-bombs were appropriately spoken in the one conversation where they occurred, and the vulgarities were used sparingly and not scattered throughout the book on every other page. The sex scenes were handled delicately, and as a reader I understood exactly what was happening without the author resorting to language typically used by high schoolers in the locker room.

BOTTOM LINE -- Essentially, this is a story of someone’s wife becoming the woman she has kept locked inside for twenty years. It is not an incredible story nor is it horrible. It is okay, and as I previously stated, Harlequin romance readers will enjoy this one. Let's call it 3-1/2 stars (extra half-star for the great descriptions).

Probably would have liked it if it were categorized properly

SPOILERS AHEAD. Like another reviewer mentioned, this was marketed as psychological thriller/suspense, and the first third of the book did provide that. But towards the midway point it just sunk a lot into the midlife crisis the main character was going through. Lots of agonizing introspection, not very suspenseful or thrilling at all. I skipped to the end and there was a kind of twist, but it really wasn't all that shocking given what we know about that character. Lots of sex and body image issues, all handled well but I believe a better fit for the romance genre. Author bio says she's taking a turn towards "darker" side of genre fiction but I personally didn't think throwing in a crime and a suicide attempt into what's pretty much a romance novel makes it very dark. Again, the book was definitely well written but it was not marketed properly at all. Two stars for the writing quality.

ONE OF THE FINEST BOOKS I'VE READ IN 2016!

If the author of the addictive romantic suspense novels in the Troubleshooters series such as The Unsung Hero, Gone Too Far, Over the Edge and Out of Control described Evelyn, After as “the best book I've read this year (2016)," it was good enough for me. Taking New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann’s verdict at face value proved to be a wise choice as historical and contemporary romance author Victoria Dahl turned psychological suspense thriller author Victoria Helen Stone’s debut novel in her new avatar is a stunning read, well-conceived and brilliantly executed.

Evelyn, After follows the emotionally heartbreaking, electrifying story of a forty-plus Evelyn Tester who leads a seemingly happy life. Married close to two decades to Dr. Gary Tester, a psychiatrist by profession, the Testers are blessed with a smart and healthy seventeen-year-old son Cameron Tester who will be off to college soon. Life couldn’t be more promising. But Evelyn’s world came crashing down one evening when she received a phone call from Gary to rush to the site of an accident. One thing leads to another, spinning her world out of control. She’s sick with rage, horror and grief at discovering what her husband was doing to her. Sick that she was married to a man she didn’t know at all. Evelyn had worked, and toiled, almost the entire past two decades for her family – raised money for whichever school Cameron attended, volunteered her time and energy all for the sake of her family. Evelyn, After by Victoria Helen Stone is one absorbing read with elements of intrigue, suspense, and romance. Victoria nails you in suspense from beginning to end. The storyline is forever winding, but is always plausible and never unbelievable. The characters are unique and fairly well-fleshed out and realistic, and their roles carefully considered and formed. What makes Evelyn, After so enjoyable is the dialogue between the characters, specially between Evelyn Tester and Noah Whitman. It added flavour to the overall distinctiveness of the story. What really stands out was Victoria’s flowing writing and narrative which really make it easy to follow the story. I was also deeply impressed by the “before” and “after” format used in alternating chapters, which was persuasive and convincing in its delivery. In the end, I’m thrilled to concur with bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann. Evelyn, After by Victoria Helen Stone is one of the most engrossing and absorbing books across all genres that I’ve read in a long time.

About the Author
Kevin Kelly is Senior Maverick at Wired magazine. He co-founded Wired in 1993, and served as its Executive Editor from its inception until 1999. He is editor and publisher of the Cool Tools website, which gets half a million unique visitors per month. From 1984-1990 Kelly was publisher and editor of the Whole Earth Review, a journal of unorthodox technical news. He co-founded the ongoing Hackers' Conference, and was involved with the launch of the WELL, a pioneering online service started in 1985. His last book, What Technology Wants (Viking/Penguin October 18, 2010), asserted that technology as a whole is not just a jumble of wires and metal but a living, evolving organism that has its own unconscious needs and tendencies. He also authored the best-selling New Rules for the New Economy and the classic book on decentralized emergent systems, Out of Control.

Extraordinarily useful, endlessly fascinating

COOL TOOLS is a sprawling compilation of useful tool reviews that author Kevin Kelly and a thousand contributors wrote over a 10-year period on Kelly's blog of the same name. Every tool in this massive (472 pages, 11" x 14") collection was recommended by an avid tool user who actually used the tool. Every tool in COOL TOOLS is either the best, the cheapest, or the only thing that works.

As a former editor of Fine Homebuilding magazine, I thought I knew a bit about tools. Not anymore. Kelly and his crew have put together the most exhaustive, inventive and mind-bending selection of stuff I've ever seen. For starters, their definition of tools encompasses more or less every human activity on earth. So in addition to hand jacks that can raise 7000 lbs., the Teeny Turner (a pocket sized driver), portable band saws, and laser measuring tools, you can find the best source on how to buy a car cheaply, make a low-budget movies, brew your own beer, rear an optimistic child, design a logo, win a fight, soak in feral (!) hot springs, learn to swim efficiently, prepare for a natural disaster, vagabond the world, do something dangerous (and live to tell about it), run for local office and win, go solar on your roof, or (a great boon to Boomers) remember anything.

This list doesn't scratch the surface of what's in COOL TOOLS and that's one of the things that makes it so irresistible--you return to it again and again. Open it at random and you experience something like being six again, with a child's sense of delight and wonder at how clever people can be and what abundance this world holds. Like the Whole Earth Catalogue from 40 years ago, COOL TOOLS might just delight and empower a new generation of people who love learning--and doing. A most remarkable book.

Cool Tools is cool

I still have a dozen or so Whole Earth Catalogs (WEC) from the last century. I visit author Kevin Kelly's Cool Tools site almost every day to see and read about the latest cool tools, and I could just afford this book, so I ordered it before it was published, and it has been open on my coffee table in my living room, ever since it arrived.

I page through it often and spend a lot of time reading about specific topics of interest to me - and I always learn new things - and even give attention to areas I'll probably never use.

It's a wish book and a daydream book and a down-and-dirty reality book. Nothing since the WEC has been as continually fascinating and educational. It reminds me of a New Age Sears Catalog of everything available - especially tools, which have always fascinated me.

I like that the book is easier to navigate than the site, which is still great for browsing, and though many of the tools reviewed are too esoteric for my direct use, it is still vastly interesting.

The type is a tad small. I keep wanting to command + it up to decent reading size for my elderly eyes, but I keep a bright lamp nearby for reading.

It's over-sized and heavy, and it's not comfortable reading closer to my eyes like most books. So I hunker down over it - maybe I should buy a podium desk, since they're listed along with everything else in the book. Or I might have given in five stars.

Tools you need to know about

If you ever enjoyed reading the Whole Earth Catalog, read no further. Just buy this. You know why.
If you are a reader of the Cool Tools blog, again, I'd say to just buy this. Yes, you've already read (or could read) much of the content on the site, but the book format (and the fact this is a hand-picked subset of the reviews from the blog) adds context and flow. You'll like curling up and paging through the oversize pages. Reviews within a category that were separated by months or years are side by side here in the book. QR codes take you directly to product pages. It is a nicely realized, physical thing.
Never heard of Cool Tools blog or the WEC? Check out the Cool Tools blog to get an idea of the tone (tell us about a cool tool, one that you'd recommend to a good friend) and subjects. This is a compilation of "cool tools"--tools that represent things you either never knew existed, or an extraordinary value. (The book itself qualifies as among the coolest of tools.)
The categories are wide ranging, from cooking, crafts, learning, music, family, electronics and more. There's certain to be some area of immediate interest, but half the fun is the insight into the tools of the trade of some activity you may never have considered like beekeeping or world travel on a shoestring budget.
There are some images with jarringly-low resolution, a few typos here and there, but overall a very nicely done book.
