Clarence King's Survey, undertaken between 1867 and 1872, covered a vast swath of terrain, from the border of California eastward to the edge of the Great Plains. It was the first survey to include a full-time photographer—Timothy O'Sullivan—who produced about 450 finished photographs in large-format and smaller-format stereographs. O'Sullivan's images convey a distinct individual quality of perception, at once direct and laconic, as well as a perfect union of objective fact and personal interpretation. As such, O'Sullivan remains the most admired, studied, and debated photographer who worked on the great western surveys of the 19th century.
This handsome and enlightening book aims to enrich and enlarge our understanding of O'Sullivan's pivotal body of western photographs by emphasizing the idea of context. This ambition encompasses several frames of reference: O'Sullivan's best-known images in relation to his larger body of survey work; the function his photographs served in relation to the survey's overall goals and methodologies; and the King Survey itself as a logical part of a complex and prolonged expeditionary endeavor. More O'Sullivan--What could be better?

Timothy O'Sullivan is widely considered to be one of the greatest photographers of the western landscape, and this fine volume demonstrates why. My first experience with Timothy O'Sullivan was in 1981, when I saw his work at the Philadelphia Museum's "American Frontiers" show, right when I was beginning to make my own photographs of the landscape. For the past 30 years, the catalog from that show was the most current publication featuring O'Sullivan's landscape work.
The past two years have have seen the publication of three fine volumes of O'Sullivan's work--"Framing the West: The Survey Photographs of Timothy O'Sullivan", "Shoshone Falls", and now "The King Survey Photographs"--all of which contribute an understanding and appreciation of O'Sullivan's work.
This volume focuses on the King Survey, between 1867 and 1869, including 78 full page plates as well as a complete thumbnail catalog of all images made in the survey. Some of these images are familiar, but more are new. The inclusion of an essay and several "rephotographic" images by Mark Klett also contributes to the book. The printing is very solid (duplicating the beauty of gold toned albumen prints is sometimes tricky--this book does it as well as anything I've seen).
The book is priced very modestly for a volume of this quality--and has been produced in a modest run of only 2800 copies--so my advice is to buy this book--now.

Really good reproductions of great photographs

This is a wonderful book. Timothy O'Sullivan is a great photographer, and this book has excellent reproductions of many of his plates. It also has enough reproductions of a set so that one can see how he moved around and got his best compositions.
The text is reasonably well written (by several contributors) but too dry and scholarly to help much in appreciating O' Sullivan's life or methods. The book: American Frontiers: The Photographs of Timothy H. O'Sullivan, 1867-1874, which one can get used from Amazon, is better at this.

O'Sullivans iconic Great West photographs well presented.

"The King Survey Photographs" is an excellent collection of the early west photographs. Timothy O"Sullivan was an excellent early day, pioneering photographer in both the technics he used and where he took his photographs.
The King Survey was the first of several expeditions organized by the U.S. Army Topographical Engineers, being four seasons between 1867 and 1872. This team moved from Eastern California to the Great Plains mostly along the 40th parallel crossing the Great Basin and the Rocky Mountains from Carson city, Nevada to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Timothy O'Sullivan was the first of a series of full time photographers to be associated with these surveys. Clarance King led an scientific exploration of data collection, specimen hunting and photography along with sketches, diagrams, maps of the Great West. These are the iconic photographs from that effort that made Timothy O"Sullivan famous. He also was a civil war photographer.
The format of the book is large, giving room for the images. The printing is well done, rendering the photographs clearly. The well done discussion of the photographs is extensive and informative.
For those interested in early views of the Great West, this is a necessary collection.
