Excellent reference for multivariate analysis with SPSS

Just finishing research to support my dissertation. This book, recommended to me by my advisor, was probably the stats reference I used the most throughout the year (or so) long (long, long) process. The first two chapters are an outstanding introduction, or re-introduction, to univariate and multivariate statistical analysis...it had been a while since I'd taken my stats classes and I found the explanations at the start of this book extrememly clear and concise. At the end of chapter two are "decision making trees", that help you select an appropriate statistical method based on your research question and variables that I found helpful. Chapter 3 is all about data screening, and in a book with so much to like, chapter 3 was my hands-down favorite. It helped me (finally) become much more systematic in my approach to screening data, and evaluating assumptions associated with that data. I primarily used chapters 6, and 5 in my study. Excellent explanations of the underlying concepts for each statistical method are provided at the start of each chapter, followed by assumptions related to the tests, how to interpret results and write up those results, examples and, at the end, a step-by-step guideline (check-lists) for how to evaluate assumtions and perform the test using SPSS. (just when you think this book cannot get any better, you will find the check-lists at the end of the chapter...at that point, you will become the happiest grad student, ever!). As the authors state in the preface, the book is designed for someone just like me...not really a stats expert, but someone who needs to understand the concpets/proceesses enough to evaluate other research, and who needs to understand, explain and execute the tests. This book certainly, in my opinion, hits the mark.

If a mature religion is one that can laugh at itself, then Mormonism is growing up. The ranks of the heretofore slim world of LDS satirists (dominated by cartoonists Pat Bagley and Calvin Grondahl and columnist Robert Kirby) have been swelled by the next generation: this compilation of ruthlessly funny articles is as irreverent as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is decorous. The book is edited by Bigelow, coauthor of Mormonism for Dummies and cofounder of the Sugar Beet (an LDS version of the satirical publication the Onion). Bigelow and his staff of Sugar Beet writers, whose identities are hidden behind ultra-Mormon pseudonyms, ferret out the delicious humor tucked away in Mormonism's quirkiest doctrines and cultural extremes in articles like "Gay polygamists make bid for legitimacy"; "Zions Bank offers financing for scrapbookers"; and "Elvis Presley accepts posthumous baptism." The humor grows mostly out of the rich soil of Wasatch Front culture, so some of it may go over the heads of converts to the faith, and many stalwart Mormons would declare the writing dangerously "light-minded." But a solid core of LDS (and LDS-raised) readers will find The Enquirer a tie-loosening, glue-gun melting pleasure—and an excellent Christmas gift for friends and family. (Nov. 6)

Like the Onion, but More Appropriate!

Oh my heck! This is Mormon beach reading without equal. Especially Mormons who might not feel TOO guilty about reading on the beach on Sunday. It's a funny, satirical, insiders view of Mormonism and the culture it has created. Written in the newsy style of The Onion, the Mormon Tabernacle Enquirer takes a peek (and a gentle poke) at the quirks of missionaries, the Relief Society, youth programs and more, and anyone who has ever regularly spent at least 3 hours of every Sunday in a chapel in Utah will know EXACTLY what these people are talking about. You'll giggle, you'll laugh, but you'll also say to yourself, "Yup, by golly, that's us..."

With a wickedly sharp ear for dialogue, and an eye for telling details of human behavior, Suad Amiry has written a wonderful and very funny book about the absurdity (and agony) of life in the Occupied Territories.

Amiry's parents were among the thousands of Palestinians who fled from their homes in 1948; they went to Amman, Jordan, where the author was brought up before attending the American University in Beirut to study architecture. She returned to Ramallah as a tourist in 1981, but then she met Salim Tamari, fell in love, married him and returned to the city, now heavily occupied by Israeli troops. This book is an attempt to illustrate the life of a middle-class, Westernized woman in an occupied territory: the daily anxieties and struggles with curfews, roadblocks, barricades, body searches, gunfire, endless red tape, discourtesy and general harassment;not to mention the less than peaceful presence of a mother-in-law taken in for safety's sake. The account, often surprisingly good-humored (as when Amiry realizes her dog has a Jerusalem passport though she does not), is vivid but somewhat sketchily based on diaries and e-mails; it gains in immediacy and relevance to current newspaper accounts what it may lack in comprehensiveness. The book was awarded Italy's Viareggio Virsilia Prize, and while the writing is unremarkable, the work serves as an important report from the front. (Oct. 18)

Drawing on her personal diary entries and e-mails, Amiry, an architect living in the West Bank town of Ramallah, captures the farce and sorrow of daily life under Israeli occupation over the last 20 years. Some readers may remember her furious appearance on 60 Minutes in 2003 ("No, this stupid wall has nothing to do with Israel's security. . . .This is the biggest land and water grab in the history of Israel"). But her book is no political tirade. She is laugh-out-loud funny about the soap-opera aspects of daily life in Ramallah. Even as she copes with her teen neighbor and collaborator, she has fun with the kitsch electric Mecca gift he gives her: Is it bugged? Is she paranoid? Then there is her mother-in-law, 91, who moves in after losing all electricity and water in her neighborhood ("Shall I pack my purple dress?" she wonders). The irreverence brings home the bureaucratic absurdity of checkpoints, curfews, barriers, and IDs ("Palestinians from Jerusalem who are Israeli residents but not Israeli citizens with Israeli travel documents"). But the suffering is always there: the reality of displacement, neighborhoods destroyed, interminable lines, shootings, separation, and loss. A prizewinner in Italy, this will reach a wide audience. Wonderful story from the other side of the wall

How does a wise woman cope with decades of destruction of Palestinian neighborhoods, dignity and freedoms? Suad Amiry describes survival based on humor and tears, memories and small kindnesses.
In late 1969, as a young adult, I was deeply sympathetic to Zionism when I first entered Israel. Then I watched, in horror, the systematic cruelty of Israelis to Arabs in their midst. How could a people who have suffered barbaric cruelties for century after century not have learned how vital it is to treat the "other" as brother?
Are the victims of cruelty doomed to pass it forward to another "other" for all time? Lord, send me to a place where all creatures are One, but varied, enjoying the differences of the "other" and growing kinder always to our neighbors.

I was fascinated of the glimpses of life on the West Bank but left wanting more. Sad Amiry's experiences have the potential to make a terrific book but we need a fleshed out background of her life, family, and work experiences to make the picture feel whole. To the reviewers that are dismissive of her point of view - it is only through reading perspectives from all sides of a conflict that we begin to gain understanding.

This is a good book that explains the Palestinian point of view during the times of Ariel Sharon running the Israeli government. The author relates mistreatment of Arabs and the demolition of their properties and destruction of their towns . There is no attempt to put the actions occurring into an historical perspective to educate the reader, rather it is a series of vignettes by the author.

I have advised my students to avoid this text.

On marking student submissions on aircraft design projects last year, I came across a small number of peculiar anomalies, derived from references to an earlier text by this author. When I subsequently saw some more of the authors' work recently, I was horrified by how many factual inaccuracies even a small sample contained. I could not advise anyone to spend money on this book.
