It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage ...
By Sloopydrew
This book is perfect for any Indy fan. Half the book is spent on Raiders of the Lost Ark (and years and years and years it took to come to fruition), as it should be and the other half contains the three inferior -- yet incredibly entertaining and worthy -- sequels. Storyboards, notes, anecdotes, story meetings -- it's all here. This is as close as anyone not named George Lucas or Steven Spielberg will ever get to being involved in the making of these movies. I doubt even Harrison Ford knew as much about the series as this book reveals -- especially all the stuff that went on PRIOR to his being involved in Raiders of the Lost Ark. This one even shows how Kingdom of the Crystal Skull could have been a better film and the arguments between Spielberg, Ford and Lucas that made it inferior (too many egos, too long a gap between the third and fourth installment). If you want everything Indiana, you'll get it here. By the time you've finished reading this "making of" and studying the storyboards and hearing the tales behind them you'll feel like you were part of the production team. J.W. Rinzler really pulled off an incredible feat compiling all of this. And if you still have doubts, take it from the man himself, "It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage." The ONLY complaint -- and it's a minor one -- is Crystal Skull wasn't out long enough to show box-office and critical response. The other three movies shows all of that and it is so much fun. Is it as fun as the Indiana Jones' movies themselves? Is anything? But it's closer than you could imagine. The book itself is an adventure. If adventure has a name, it must be this book!

The best book you can find on the Indiana Jones movies
By Brando
A+ book on the making of Indiana Jones. Inside you will find fantastic stories from the old days with inside information on the creation of the films. From Raiders to Crystal, this book covers it all. Full color photos and paintings with excellent pictures and items from the films. I plan on collecting all these Lucasfilm books by J.W. Rinzler because he has greatly impressed me with the amount of time and research put into these. You can really tell he put his heart into these books, and the high quality shows for itself. If you are fan of Indiana Jones, filmmaking, Lucas, Spielberg, and Harrison Ford then this book will deliver!

This brings you right onto the movie set
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:28368951]]This is probably the best making-of-the-movie book I've read so far this year.

A lot of effort must have been put into research. Considering when the first Indiana Jones movie was shot, I'm very impressed by how they manage to document all this information.

The book is about the production process of the 4 Indy movies, up to the Crystal Skull. The narration explains in great detail all the events that happen behind the scenes. It's filled with lots of interviews. Read from how Spielberg came up with Indy's name to the last day of shooting Crystal Skull where Harrison Ford gave Shia LaBeouf a signed hat.

Reading the book is like working on the set itself. For that, it's worth the price alone.

There are hundreds of high resolution production photos. Several art illustrations were put in also, such as posters, storyboards and set designs. There are 300 pages in this 15-inch (screen measurement) book.

For fans of Indiana Jones, this will be an immensely satisfying book. For non-fans, this book will still impress. This book is that good.

The Fourth Dimension and Non-Euclidean Geometry in Modern Art (Leonardo Book Series), by Linda Dalrymple Henderson

In this groundbreaking study, first published in 1983 and unavailable for over a decade, Linda Dalrymple Henderson demonstrates that two concepts of space beyond immediate perception -- the curved spaces of non-Euclidean geometry and, most important, a higher, fourth dimension of space -- were central to the development of modern art. The possibility of a spatial fourth dimension suggested that our world might be merely a shadow or section of a higher dimensional existence. That iconoclastic idea encouraged radical innovation by a variety of early twentieth-century artists, ranging from French Cubists, Italian Futurists, and Marcel Duchamp, to Max Weber, Kazimir Malevich, and the artists of De Stijl and Surrealism.

In an extensive new Reintroduction, Henderson surveys the impact of interest in higher dimensions of space in art and culture from the 1950s to 2000. Although largely eclipsed by relativity theory beginning in the 1920s, the spatial fourth dimension experienced a resurgence during the later 1950s and 1960s. In a remarkable turn of events, it has returned as an important theme in contemporary culture in the wake of the emergence in the 1980s of both string theory in physics (with its ten- or eleven-dimensional universes) and computer graphics. Henderson demonstrates the importance of this new conception of space for figures ranging from Buckminster Fuller, Robert Smithson, and the Park Place Gallery group in the 1960s to Tony Robbin and digital architect Marcos Novak.

A Marvellous New Edition of Henderson's Groundbreaking Work
By Paul Halpern
In this masterful, meticulously-researched book, Henderson unravels the deep connections between early 20th century art (cubism, futurism, dadaism, surrealism, and related movements) and the mathematics of the 19th century, particularly the emergence of the fourth dimension and the idea of non-Euclidean spaces. For example, she shows how the artist Duchamp was influenced by the mathematician Poincaré, rather than (as commonly believed) by Einstein. The new edition begins with a magnificent "reintroduction" spanning the latter half of the 20th century (1950s - 2000), and including vital cultural connections between the fourth dimension and the visual arts (along with other media). As Henderson demonstrates, interest in higher dimensions has grown in recent decades through the emergence of string theory and other scientific ideas. This rebirth of interest has been reflected in artistic ventures of the period.

The Fourth Dimension And Non-Euclidean Geometry In Modern Art is an essential book for anyone interested in the intersection between science, mathematics and culture. It offers a riveting chronicle of the emergence of the idea of the fourth dimension in math, its popularization in literature and its adoption by the world of art that has persisted until the present day. Highly recommended!

Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr., by Ron Chernow

John D. Rockefeller, Sr.--history's first billionaire and the patriarch of America's most famous dynasty--is an icon whose true nature has eluded three generations of historians. Now Ron Chernow, the National Book Award-winning biographer of the Morgan and Warburg banking families, gives us a history of the mogul "etched with uncommon objectivity and literary grace . . . as detailed, balanced, and psychologically insightful a portrait of the tycoon as we may ever have" (Kirkus Reviews). Titan is the first full-length biography based on unrestricted access to Rockefeller's exceptionally rich trove of papers. A landmark publication full of startling revelations, the book will indelibly alter our image of this most enigmatic capitalist.
Born the son of a flamboyant, bigamous snake-oil salesman and a pious, straitlaced mother, Rockefeller rose from rustic origins to become the world's richest man by creating America's most powerful and feared monopoly, Standard Oil. Branded "the Octopus" by legions of muckrakers, the trust refined and marketed nearly 90 percent of the oil produced in America.
Rockefeller was likely the most controversial businessman in our nation's history. Critics charged that his empire was built on unscrupulous tactics: grand-scale collusion with the railroads, predatory pricing, industrial espionage, and wholesale bribery of political officials. The titan spent more than thirty years dodging investigations until Teddy Roosevelt and his trustbusters embarked on a marathon crusade to bring Standard Oil to bay.
While providing abundant new evidence of Rockefeller's misdeeds, Chernow discards the stereotype of the cold-blooded monster to sketch an unforgettably human portrait of a quirky, eccentric original. A devout Baptist and temperance advocate, Rockefeller gave money more generously--his chosen philanthropies included the Rockefeller Foundation, the University of Chicago, and what is today Rockefeller University--than anyone before him. Titan presents a finely nuanced portrait of a fascinating, complex man, synthesizing his public and private lives and disclosing numerous family scandals, tragedies, and misfortunes that have never before come to light.
John D. Rockefeller's story captures a pivotal moment in American history, documenting the dramatic post-Civil War shift from small business to the rise of giant corporations that irrevocably transformed the nation. With cameos by Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst, Jay Gould, William Vanderbilt, Ida Tarbell, Andrew Carnegie, Carl Jung, J. Pierpont Morgan, William James, Henry Clay Frick, Mark Twain, and Will Rogers, Titan turns Rockefeller's life into a vivid tapestry of American society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is Ron Chernow's signal triumph that he narrates this monumental saga with all the sweep, drama, and insight that this giant subject deserves.

From the Inside Flap
While providing abundant new evidence of Rockefeller's misdeeds, Chernow discards the stereotype of the cold-blooded monster to sketch an unforgettablyhuman portrait of a quirky, eccentric original.

The Christian Capitalist
By Jonathan Shafer
Chernow's biography is both exhaustive and readable. The author's interpretive decision to weave Rockefeller's affiliation with the Baptist Church into his subject's pathos was interesting and compelling. It was enjoyable to read how Chernow chose to resolve the contradictions that he identified between Rockefeller's faith in unbridled capitalism and compassionate religion.

I'm not familiar enough with the sources Chernow referenced to understand whether he contrived those contradictions, but they paint the portrait of a man who was shockingly unconflicted about his achievements as one of the most successful business-people in American history.

It's a good book!

A More Complete Understanding.
By James B. Moon
After completing a history of Butte, MT, I wished to gain a better understanding of Standard Oil's role in the formation of Anaconda Copper. When I found that Mr. Chernow had written a biography of John D. Rockefeller, I knew I would learn how Standard Oil and Anaconda Copper fit together. Titan did not disappoint. The nexus of Standard Oil to Anaconda was actually through the investment of individual officers of Standard Oil and not the actual "evil" corporation. In addition, John D. Rockefeller had literally nothing to do with the Anaconda creation as he had already "retired" from the daily management of Standard Oil. The Butte history I recently read was written in about 1933 and did a poor job of explanning the Standard Oil nexus.

Ron Chernow is a thorough researcher and provides substantial detail in bringing his subjects to life. I ratesd this book as a four star selection only in as much as some of the details of Rockefellers children and grandchildern became a little tedious. I am not sure I really was looking for as detailed a history of all the decendant's nerouses.

Major learnings from Mr. Chernows work were

1. Rockefeller's strick adherence to fundamentalist Baptist faith.

2. Rockefeller's role in developing the Mesabi Iron Range, something I knew nothing about before reading this book.

3. The role of questionable ethics used in growing Standard Oil and not violation of law.

4. The fact that Rockefeller made almost all of his petroleum fortune before the "invention" of the automobile and subsequent demand for gasoline. Kerosene for lighting drove his fortune.

5. The role John D. Rockefeller, Jr. played in establishing Grand Tenton, Smokey Mountain, Acadia National Parks and Colonial Williamsburg.

6. The life view John D. Rockefeller had on philanthropy as he really had a life long commitment to spend his wealth for the benefit of others. He died with an estate of less than $30 million dollars at 97 years of age, about 2 1/2 years short of his life-long goal of living to 100 having given away over $500 million (estimated at $30 billion in current dollars).

7. Rockefeller's role in the creation of the University of Chicago and its early growth to one of the country's elite schools.

As with previous Chernow biographies I have read, this book left me with a feeling that I had gain a pretty exhaustive view of the man and his times.

His opinion about his wealth was that "God made him good with Money"
By TomR
For the first time we get to see just who Rockefeller was from his own side and point of view. First of all he was a highly moralistic Christian---Any hypocrisy on his part he was unaware of. His opinion about his wealth was that "God made him good with Money", That "his Money was really GOD's Money" and "God was only letting him have stewardship over it because he was so good with managing it (for God)"

Another point I found interesting--He was not (he claims) motivated by GREED to gather control or own the Oil Industry. The industry of the time, was so volatile with prices making drastic swings even with the discovery of single wells, It was almost impossible to manage---Workers continually being laid off and hired back, drilling companies and refineries going bankrupt, bought off, sold off, etc. The vital oil business was CHAOS

He made a few attempts to stabilize or "fix" prices by the establishment of and use of producer cartels. But their would always be cheaters who would undercut their efforts.

Rockefeller felt the only way to stabilize the industry at the time, was to try to buy ALL or as many as he could out.
It worked-----and finally stabilized the industry. But of course, after time, the monopoly served its purpose---It began to have detrimental effects near the turn of the century.---Which caused the Feds to break it up into several competing companies.
So overall, I got the impression that Rockefeller did what he thought was right, and not out of greed as his enemies charged. But his initial measures DID cause problems a little further down the road--and he was unwilling to do what needed to be done on his own.--Till the Feds had to jump in.

My FAvorite!
By Amazon Customer
So I auditioned for this play at my college, and wasn't casted at all, but! I fell in LOVE with this script and story. I love the writing and the vivid language, and the characters are so delightful! After having read it a few times, I'm thinking about adapting it for the screen, because... WHY NOT! I'm in love with every single character, and couldn't have asked for a happier disappointment in not being cast! It was truly one of the best things that could have happened to me.

I love Alexandra's character. I am so her, and she is so me. She is bright and intuitive, while also being witty and a bit 'out to lunch'. She loves a good vocabulary word, and is enjoying exploring with two motherly friends. I loved her dialogue the most!

A Great Play for those who love language
By Chris R
I was the male lead in this play, playing all eight parts not played by the three female protags. This was so much fun, and is clever and detailed. If you are well-read and love deep language, this is a must-read or perform. Some of the references will go over your head, others will make you laugh, such as Madame Nu saying, "Let them eat Barbeque!" (check Madame Nu on Wikipedia, it's funny, I swear). It is strange, certainly, but it plays with time and place in such a fun and varied non sequuiter format, you won't mind after getting used to it. By the end, you'll want more.

Intelligent and entertaining
By Sherry Landrum
This is an entertainingly intelligent play. Three 19th century female explorers find themselves in Terra Incognita, a place on the verge of time. They realize as they travel, the artifacts they discover are from the future. The style and central idea is reminiscent of Tom Stoppard. A thoroughly enjoyable play for 3 women and one man.

I love that it's small and can fit into a purse
By Danielle E.
This textbook is a very readable format, physically and mentally. I love that it's small and can fit into a purse, and the pages are thin so it's not bulky. The concepts are broken down and accompanied by short personal accounts, kinda like a Humans of New York post. Just what I needed for my class.

I saw a post of on Facebook of a poem from this book written by Michael Reid and I had just had to find more of his stuff. Lucky for me he had a book! Dear Mr. Reid at first I felt a little taken back by a man saying some of these things. But you always explained yourself and I was able to understand that you have a lot of wisdom and knowledge on what it is to be a woman. Thank you for writing this book. It was very inspirational. I plan to read it again, especially the poetry. So people read it, definitely give it a try. You won't regret it.

Inspirational
By Shelby Nakamura
I was first turned to this book from a picture on Twitter, it was a picture of one of the pages, and that picture alone spoke to me in so many ways that I had to give he book a chance. I am so happy that I did, this book provoked so many thoughts that I have had but never dared to articulate. There are also many poems that I believe that I was in denial about some of the things that Mike talks about in Dear Woman. I did realize how much that I related to everything he was saying, he truly inspired me to be a better stronger woman for the future. Mike spoke directly to my heart and I would recommend this book to anyone that needs a little truth and inspiration in their life.
